View Full Version : Getting 24a from 12a battery. Help?

To run pneumatics do we need 24 amps? If so can you please help us understand how we force this amperage out of a 12 amp battery.

The battery is 12 volts at ~18 amp-hours. This means it will supply (give or take depending on condition) 12 Volts at 1 amp for 18 hours. Amperage from a batter isn't really limited. The limiting factors are the voltage at which it is supplying it at and the resistance of the load you are powering.

As for your question, I think you are confusing volts and amps. -edit If it is the Festo valve, you have to wire it as per the instructions to the proper terminals on the solenoid breakout. it will get 24V from the breakout and will work fine on 12V from the battery as an input to the controller.-

The pneumatics will run fine on 12V, they are just rated for up to 24V.

The 24 volt solenoid valves will run fine on 12 volts?

Sorry, I assumed it a generic industrial solenoid rated to operate on a range of voltages. If it is the Festo valve, you have to wire it as per the instructions to the proper terminals on the solenoid breakout. it will get 24V from the breakout and will work fine on 12V from the battery as an input to the controller.

There are three wiring diagrams on the First website, and one of them will answer your questions as to wiring 24 volts solenoids. Essentially, the solenoid module is merely switching whatever voltage is wired to it's terminals. Under Robot rules, you can wire one and only one solenoid module to the 24 volt power supply on the PD that also powers the Crio. You then can control the 24 volt solenoids from that module. There is a power supply on the PD that is designed to convert 12 volts to 24 volts specifically to power the Crio. It is called a "boost" supply. If team chooses to use both 24 volt solenoid valves and 12 volt solenoid valves on the robot, then they can use two modules, one wired for 12 and one wired for 24 volts. 24 volt solenoid valves will not work reliably on 12 volts as the battery does not remain at 12 volts during the entire match.
