View Full Version : TTL -> RS-232 Board won't stay on!

The little TTL to RS-232 board that came with the CMUCam2 won't stay on our RC...
The bugger keeps falling off!
What are other teams doing to keep this little piece of hardware on?

1. A string of Zip-ties over the entire robot controller?
2. A little dab-L-do-ya (hot-glue the edge to the socket)?
3. Bend the pins slightly to offset?
Just a few ideas....

I'm a software guy who dabbles in wiring, and I should probably stay away from mechanical issues like holding down the pwm cables or the TTL/RS-232 converter board. So I asked our lead engineer yesterday to come up with a solution for me. I haven't seen it yet, but I have complete confidence in him, because he is Andy Baker.

I used the trusty hot glue gun.

Our problem is that the camera loses communication every now and then for no apparent reason (yes, everything is still connected). We usually have to disconnect and wiggle things a bit and then it communicates again. I'm a little worried that the board and it's connectors are not going to be robust enough to hold up once the robot is in the competition environment. Just like in the other PWM thread, I have serious doubts about the robustness of the PWM cable connectors this year.

It looks likes the board stays put after we insulated it and surrounding area of the RC with a copious amount of electrical tape...
