View Full Version : 2006 Pre-Kickoff FF -- IT'S ON!

12-06-2005, 06:20 PM
Well, we discussed it earlier this year. And I think that we're just crazy enough to actually do it. The idea of a Pre-Kickoff league was based off some long-forgotten discussion about teams and their reputations. Let's put it to the test.
The league runs just like any other Fantasy FIRST league, with a few modifications:
1) Any team competing in the 2006 FRC is fair game.
2) All trading, drafting, and other methods of picking a team cease at 11:59 PM the night before Kickoff.
3) The score that a team receives will be the average of the scores received at each event, including the Championship.
Unless the 2006 game requires serious revisions to it, the scoring system will be as follows:
Regionals:
(Seeding before selections)
20....1st seed
12....2nd and 3rd seed
6......4th through 8th
3......9th through 12th
2......12th through 16th

For the Championship:

Just to keep the drafting from going on for a month, I'd think it wiser to limit it to four rounds.
I'd like to use this league to experiment with drafting a bit. In essence, it's like the one I posted in the suggestions thread. Step one will involve setting the draft order:
Round 1: Names from a hat (or similar randomization device)
Round 2: Same, backwards.
Round 3: New names from the metaphorical hat
Round 4: The new names, backwards.
Once the draft order is set, we'll set a timetable for reasonable hours (say, 8:30 PM until 11:30 PM Eastern each night). Every ten minutes, someone will gain the opportunity to draft. They don't have to draft in that ten minutes (although that makes the most sense strategically), but they do have to draft before the trading deadline. Each empty slot at the trading deadline is a 25-point penalty. (The penalty exists because it's possible for someone to lose points on a team that they drafted correctly. It should be impossible, however, for a team that competes to lose 25 FF points.)
Trading your time slot is just like trading teams--one for one. Package deals with a team and a time slot are considered fair game, so long as both parties are switching equal numbers of teams and time slots.
Thoughts?

I can see where you are going with deadkines on draft picks and such, so 4 rounds sounds like a great idea. But what about a limit on people? This could potentially lead to fewer headaches when it came to scoring AND drafting. I know that the draft date is TBDand the 17th is the end last day to sign up, but any tentative time frame running trough your mind for drafting?

I guess I wasn't clear--I'm perfectly content capping the list at 35 people. That's 140 draft picks, with (assuming a new drafter is eligible every ten minutes) eighteen picks per night with a three-hour window of new drafting each night. So if we start drafting 12/18, we'd finish on 12/27 (eight days of drafting, with no clock-based draft going on 12/24-25). If the list fills up beforehand, or if we don't have a full roster, that timeline will naturally change.
That said, expect the drafting process to start a night or two after signups close.

Simple. PM me your list (and be sure to put in some safeties on that list), and I'll make sure to catch when your time comes.
On the subject of drafting, even if we fill it up early, the draft is officially on hold until I can get my laptop back from Apple (as it's headed off tomorrow for service).
Seeing as how I had to send in my Dell laptop this time last year, I'm wondering if there's a laptop out there that is Billfredproof.

Alright, so the signup deadline is tomorrow night. Apple says my iBook has been fixed (...again...), and they ship everything next-day. Next-day to DHL means Monday. Therefore, the draft will begin on Monday night unless the world ends or the Lake Murray Dam bursts. (At that point, I have bigger problems.)
Additionally, I'm going to make one revision to the scoring system: There will be no highest score category, for the simple reason that I'd have to look through every match of every regional to determine the thirty-something high scores for all the regionals and the Championship. I'm just not that motivated. (Everything else, however, will remain unchanged.)

I intended to start the draft tonight, starting around 8:00 PM Eastern (which handily translates out to 5:00 PM Pacific) and ending at 11:00 PM Eastern. New drafting spots will open up every five minutes due to the large number of people. If you're next to draft even if it's early, go for it. Non-drafters will just have a blank space that can be filled later; lists will be consulted just before the next person is scheduled to draft.
For example, suppose Ed and Conor both want to draft Redateam. Even after 8:05 (and thus in Conor's time), if Ed can get his pick of Redateam in before Conor's, then Ed gets Redateam. If Conor gets it in before Ed, however, then Ed's just going to have to settle for Bluateam.

That Does Not mean they build and use great robots, and win with them, which is the easiest way to gain points in FF, chairman's sometimes comes down to luck of the draw

Not only chairman's, but FF in general comes down to luck sometimes.
I submit exhibit A: my random pick that was given to me in FF for the Championship event in 2005, Team 67.
And we all know how 67 did at the Championship Event, and how many points they gave me for FF. :)
Anyways, who's up next?

The way I see it, go with whatever you think will get you the points. Will another team pull a 67? Perhaps. Will 254 or 22 or 47 or any of the other past Chairman's winners come back next season and win the Championship? Entirely possible.
(Diverging from the topic a bit, has anyone besides 67 won both a Championship and a Chairman's, even in separate years?)
Edit: Conor's up next.

I disagree with the thought that the CHairman's Award is won by "mistake".
All those HOF teams worked hard to eran their right to be there and while a robot is a tangeble object that is easy to assess it's value .
The Chairman's award requires alot of work and effort of these teams and actually you can see over the years when they become CHairman worthy teams (Like 118 the odds on favorites this year, 341 and 79)
I heavily reccomend going to the HOF at the Championship and check out what these teams do for the FIRST community and you'd be impressed with the amount of work these guys do off the field as they do on the field.
Ian Curtis
12-22-2005, 04:37 PM
When HOT was announced as the winner last year the announcer said they had a $20,000 self-supporting Engineering Outreach program (at least I'm pretty sure that's what the announcer said). Now if that isn't dedication, what is?
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to get back to my evil plan of waiting to draft two certain teams who have somehow managed to slip through the draft process to the third (and hopefully fourth) rounds. :ahh:

I think that's what they were getting at in the whole discussion. Each of those teams has the ability to win Chairman's in Atlanta. However, in a situation with so many teams at that level, it's really hard to determine which one team will actually do it. That's the element of chance.
On a side note, is anyone opposed to adding a 45-point category for Chairman's Honorable Mentions? (That would put it on par with winning EI at the Championship.)

12-22-2005, 05:34 PM
I dont know really, 45 points sounds a bit high, but i also think the Chairmans and awards points are already too high. I'm not sure what scores i would propose instead, but i just want to make sure that no one will get lucky like elgin did last year(no offence elgin) and have the game completely dominated by one team. Yes I know if could be because the person drafted well...but i dont know, i think the awards are scored to highly as of now.
Billfred
12-22-2005, 06:15 PM
Looking back at the scores, 80 points does seem a bit steep in relation to every other scoring category out there (world champions get 35).
So how about this:
Champions: 35 points
Chairman's HM: 45 points
EI: 45 points
Chairman's: 55 points
Still a big amount of points, and well worth one's while, but it's not utterly dominating.
And Conor is still up.
Ian Curtis
12-22-2005, 06:53 PM
I would argue it should be utterly dominating. The winning team is the pinnacle of FIRST. (Also, remember the score will be brought down becuase it is an average of all events they attend, and they'll be attending at least 2.)

With all due respect to the organizers of this draft, changing the scoring ¾ of the way through the draft is a terrible idea. It completely throws off the reasoning behind each pick. While I personally think the Chairman’s points were too much, changing the scoring now is ludicrous...and takes away from people who choose strong Chairman’s teams as opposed to strong performing robot teams. Its only fair to keep it the way it is.

That said, while I found a few new teams I am going to be keeping my eye on the whole season for various reasons, I will choose for my 4th pick, one of my favorite teams in FIRST since my rookie year in 2001.
Good luck in 2005 and beyond, my 4th and final pick for preseason FF;
Team 192 GUNN Robotics.

So i must say this was the hardest decision i had to go with. I had it down to 3 teams, and i guess i will have to go with the random pick.
To round out my alliance i would like team 340.... GRR
Billfred
12-23-2005, 09:31 PM
Hmm...folks have drafted 340, 341, and 342. Anyone want to get 343 to complete the set? ;)
Jay is next. (http://www.billfredinthenighttime.com/draft.html)
Billfred

Jay listifies 1279.
Greg is up.
edit: Alex trades 1559 for 195.
Billfred
12-23-2005, 09:49 PM
Greg passes, and will pick later.
Holtzman is up, then Corey will finish it out.
Billfred

Corey is up. (Greg, Holtzman, and Marc can all draft when they're ready.)
Corey Balint
12-23-2005, 10:21 PM
Well, this would be Mr. Irrelevant...but some people didnt draft yet.
Anyhoo, looks like i shall round out my alliance with a Virginian team, 384.

BTW, Big Mike took 343.
Billfred

Wow, I missed that.
That finishes up most of the drafting. Marc, Holtzman, and Greg can draft when they want. Trading is open until the night before Kickoff at 11:59 PM.

Holtzman texted me, he wants 1002.
Marc P.

I'll take our partners from NYC last year, 555.
Greg Needel

To finish out the league i ask you when did Christopher Columbus sail the ocean blue?.....that would be 1492

I'm going to change my last pick from team 340 to team 135

I have a trade request from Alex Cromier.
He wants 1126 from me and I get 469.
Any problems?
Billfred

Well, the intent was to finish all trading/drafting/plotting/scheming/etc. before Kickoff, then let the chips fall where they may. Now that people have been capable of seeing the robots (especially at this phase of the season), I'm not too keen on it.
Anyone else want to provide some input?

At first I didn't have a problem with it, but you have a great point.
Now, I agree with Billfred.
It just doesn't sit right.

I have to agree with you Billfred. It did state in the rules all trading was to go on before Kickoff. Because the point of the pre-season FF is to go with teams you think will build a good robot, not teams you have seen that have good robots now.
And Alex only wants 1126 cause he thinks us and them are going to win FLR. Alex stop counting your chickens before they hatch, you never know who is going to win.

All the more reason to let him have them. :p

Good question.
Cory seems to have a pretty balanced setup with his picks (look here (http://www.billfredinthenighttime.com/draft.html) for a memory-jogger), but Dez seems to have the two most-talked-about teams on ChiefDelphi between 1114 and 61. (We won't go into why, but needless to say a lot of eyes will be upon them.) I have to say, though--if Beatty's had time enough to make all those videos, then I'm gonna be collecting a heck of a lot of points by the end of this shin-dig.
That said, right now I wouldn't count anyone out. We've got five weeks of regionals plus a Championship to get through. I'll do my best to post updates after each week of competition, but just remember it's 96 teams I have to keep track of. :)

I'm feeling pretty good (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44812&) about (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44453) my (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/pictures.php?s=&action=single&picid=12975&direction=DESC&sort=date&perrow=10&trows=10&quiet=Verbose) lineup. (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44488&) ;)
But with all the tough competition I'm sure someone will give me a run for my money.

Only one of my team's (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/pictures.php?s=&action=single&picid=13169&direction=DESC&sort=date&perrow=4&trows=3&quiet=Verbose) robots has been released, but I've seen one other. I'm also very confident in my other two teams.
This is going to be a very close competition.

Well im pretty confident in my picks so far. I have only seen the design from 2 of the 4 teams but I still have faith.

192 is the only one of my 4 teams without a pic or vid released yet, but this gives me great hope for my FF team, and Team 192 as well.
After the fiasco surrounding the 2004-05 Gunn Robotics Team which caused the closure of the team, an overwhelming tide of supporive parents and determined students restarted team 192 in 05-06.
I can hardly wait.

I just realized something from an earlier post about the scoring...this year instead it should look like this for selection of bots point values.
picked by first round...points 2nd round
1st...8.....(,5)
2nd..7.5.....1
3rd...7.....1.5
4th...6.5.....2
5th...6.....2.5
6th...5.5.....3
7th...5......3.5
8th...4.5.....4

Fair enough.
Does anyone have a good source of match data for the past two weeks? I can't get data for week one from FIRST (they took it offline), and the stuff I'm hearing about GLR is not making me want to particularly trust it, either. If not, can anyone suggest a fair and equitable revision to scoring that can be implemented with what we do know for sure?
