Joe Ross's links were to screenshots of KDE (the K Desktop Environment) (www.kde.org), Gnome (www.gnome.org), and Mac OS X (www.apple.com).
Mac OS X runs off of a modified BSD (www.openbsd.org) kernel, hence my reference to BSD...

Kaleidoscope is the coolest program to make your desktop scheme different. It has been around for the longest time. A lot of people use it, Even some famous people use it like Jenny from Jennicam.com (http://www.jennicam.org/j2kr/screens/index.html). It is very easy to make schemes of your own. Also I know on the Mac & Wintel that you can change your start up screen. I know it is easy to do so on the mac, but I do not know who to do it with Windows.
Its shareware, but if you like that kind of stuff, Its worth it.

I no longer use any of these programs (windows blinds and those like it) to alter the looks of my version of windows because it slows my computer to a crawl (Hardly restart and constantly doing something that requires the speed). The only mod I would ever install on my machine is a replacement for "Explorer.exe" which doesn't really eat resources.
