ATLANTA, April 23, 2002 - Segway LLC today announced the sale, shipment and deployment of ten Segway™ Human Transporters (HT) to several organizations and companies in Atlanta. The units will be used by the Central Atlanta Progress Ambassador Forceâ, the Atlanta Regional Commission, and Georgia Power. In conjunction, the Atlanta Police Department will conduct a 60-day trial with an additional six Segway HT units.

The Segway HT is the first self-balancing, electric-powered personal transporter designed to enhance the productivity of people by increasing the distance they can travel and the amount they can carry anywhere people walk. It is designed for optimal use in dense urban environments providing a non-polluting, short-distance travel solution.

"Atlanta is the perfect city to pilot the Segway Human Transporter," says Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin. "Our city has established a reputation as a leader in innovation. The Segway HT fits right into our effort to employ alternative means of transportation to help us achieve cleaner, more livable communities in the future."

"Atlanta is a great city for Segway to evaluate and broaden our product applications," said Dean Kamen, Segway's chairman and founder. "The Segway HT offers a compelling solution to the short-distance travel needs Atlanta and most cities around the world face. Today marks a step in the right direction as some of the leading organizations in this great city put the Segway HT to work."

The Segway HT's will be used by the following:

The Ambassador Force has purchased six units for use by shift supervisors in the Downtown area. The Segway HT's will allow force members to cover more ground and navigate the area more efficiently.

The Atlanta Regional Commission, the agency in charge of transportation planning in the Atlanta Region, will use their Segway HT's in a variety of settings -- from short trips in urban settings, to suburban applications including travel from outlying transit stations to nearby town centers for meetings.

Georgia Power has purchased two units for use at its power plant sites and other larger corporate facilities. The company also plans to conduct feasibility testing for reading electric meters using a Segway HT.

The Atlanta Police Department is working with Segway to develop the structure and methodology for law enforcement applications using machines loaned by Segway LLC. Four officers will use Segway HT units in Atlanta's downtown Zone 5 district for community policing protocol development and two additional officers will use Segway HT's at the Hartsfield Airport to create overall security, traffic and pedestrian flow management practices around the airport's perimeter.

Yeah, but the funny thing about the guy falling off was if you looked in the background ... the Segway was still standing upright while the guy was sitting on the ground crying!! Any new news on that incident?
