Do you mean Autodesk Inventor as "CAD"? Both Solidworks and Autodesk Inventor are considered Computer Aided Design "CAD". Both programs are definitely used by many teams.

You are allowed to use whatever you want to design the robots. However, for the Inventor Award and Autodesk Viz award, there are very specific guidelines that you should research.

Thanks, and yes I do mean Autodesk CAD, sorry I forgot to mention that.

It's Autodesk Inventor. AutoCAD is one of their products. :D

sorry, as you can tell I'm not anywhere near a drafter, I just decided to post this question for my drafting teammates, because that would make it easier for us if we could just use Solid Works instead.

Thanks

Mr. Senior,

Great design. SolidWorks is looking for cool robots for our 2009 SolidWorks World Poster. Please submit your model to the SolidWorks March Robot Madness design contest. Its easy to enter, you need a team picture, design tip, and image file on your team's web page. Go to www.solidworks.com/robotics.

Marie

Team 1091 use Solid Works instead of Autodesk Inventor because Solid Works is installed on the high school computers and is part of the school's curriculum.

Many companies in our area use Solid Works more than Inventor, so that is also a factor on which program to use.

I don't know exactly but I think you cannot use anything but Autodesk Inventor since the award description explicitly mentions it:
"Please note: Designs must be created entirely within Autodesk Inventor (any version). Importing geometry from other CAD packages will significantly impact the team score. " (taken from Firstbase-competition description)

Best regards

Chris
