View Full Version : Suggestions for organization of "the Championship"

First of all, I know a thread like this was started several months ago, but with all the anger about the recent changes I think that we should restart the thread. So with that out of the way, here is the question:
Since you disagree with the recent changes, what would you rather have seen done to Nationals, if anything at all?
Lets try to keep this civil. Post your ideas, and if you see an idea that you disagree with or feel would not be possible, say so but in a calm manner. Maybe if we can all agree on some changes, however small they may be (maybe changing the points needed to qualify to 4 or something), then FIRST will listen.

I guess I'll be the first one to post my ideas...
First of all, I would like to say that I was also dissapointed to see changes as drastic as these, but I recognize that changes like this were inevitable. FIRST has always expressed its concern with the growing size of nationals, and obviously it has gotten to the point where they had to do something about it. I also want to point out something said in the letter from FIRST that should give you an idea about what FIRST's objective is:
It is the process rather than product or performance that is at the core of what makes FIRST unique.
Anyway, here are some changes to the point system I would like to see:
Award rookies teams bonus points, ie 3 points for first year teams, 1 point for second year teams. The 1 point for "Top Rookie Seed at Regional or National Event" is simply not enough.
Award 1 point to teams taking 2nd to 4th place in a regional or nationals
Finally, I just wanted to clear up one of the biggest misconceptions so far. You ALWAYS know at least 1 year before whether or not you will be attending nationals. The points are calculated the year BEFORE so all teams should know whether or not they are going to nationals as of today, making hotel and plane reservations easy. Once again, every team should know as of today whether or not they qualify for nationals. The only problem I could see would be those who don't qualify for nationals by prior accomplishments but then win a regional, allowing them to goto nationals for that year.
That's all I can think of now. I'll post more if I come up with some other ideas, right now i have homework to do
