XP Hard Drive Space Question

On Windows XP Home or (NT), does anyone know how to free up about 3 gigs of space that seemed to be taken up from a Restore Point?

Are you shure that windows is not taking it up cause xp is a fat cow that likes to take alot of space only way i think of doing it would lose everything you have and have to reinstall

you could try defragging, i know l used to miss space, and defrag, and find it again.

i can't say much more though, cause i'm slowly purging all windows knowledge from my brain, linux is so much more fun .

My thread:
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ws +partition

I'm missing 14 GIGABYTES on my 55.8gb main drive... my second drive is fine, but rather than having 93gb space total, I have 79gb... I'm still got 38gb free total and I'm burning off 10gb in the next few days - BUT IT IS STILL ANNOYING to not know where the space is gone.

I think I have an idea now though. When I reinstalled XP into the C:\windows directory, it locked up my old username and created a new one with a .000 after it... the old username is still probably retaining about 14gb of files. however, when I click the folder's properties, it says 0kb but it's locked and I can't get into...ah well... my soon to be 40+ gb will be fine... though if anyone can help, PM me or post here.

Oh, here is the almighty answer: You have to turn off System Restore.

To turn off Windows XP System Restore:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Select "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box as shown in this illustration:
5. Click Apply. The following message appears:
6. As noted in the message, this will delete all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
8. Proceed with what you need to do. For example, removing viruses. Restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

I love finding stuff.

Thank you Ricky...that should recover the 4 gigs of space I lost.

I'll also defrag (thanks to who said that)....boy, being on a computer for about 5-7 years, and didn't even think about the System Restore (the defrag is a pain IMHO).

Try searching for a program called "CM DiskCleaner", it's really good program to free space (freeware).
