what are people doing for wireless at venue for scouting

since we can't use 802.11 at an event, what alternatives are people exercising for wirelessly communicating at an event? cellular data (3G/4G)? has anyone tried 802.15 yet, or X-Bee?

I sure wish the FIRST would just cave and set up a 2nd 802.11 just for scouting; so many teams just defy the rules and set up a private one anyway....

Re: what are people doing for wireless at venue for scouting

We use the original wireless network, paper and people who walk quickly. Cellular data should also work, as long as you can get a signal. Also, cellular data can't be used during the matches, so all data that might want during a match should be gathered before the match begins, but this should already be true. Matches are too short to waste time fumbling around to find notes about the opposing alliance.

Sometimes sneakernet (lots of memory sticks!), usually actual wired ethernet, sometimes the venue allows 802.11 on 2.4 GHz (it's happened!), and twice 900 MHz with borrowed equipment.

A bigger problem for us is 110VAC in the stands.

Well, the field crew does have a network finder. Presumably, they know what the standard venue networks are, and what should be up due to the teams on the field. If there's an issue, it's not that hard to locate a network base to shut it down (or make an announcement that a given network needs to be shut down).

Sneakernet is always a viable option. Sometimes, the simplest tools are the best ones!

Paths a rules question takes:

Official: Post to Q&A-->GDC reviews-->Official answer posted on Q&A.

Unofficial: Post to CD-->CD views and comments, sometimes using The Manual and interpreting it-->Somebody goes the Official route -->Answer gets posted on CD eventually, as a quote from Q&A.

Which one takes longer for an official ruling? Therefore, which one makes more sense to use?
