I'm sorry, but does it really matter? It may be a misunderstanding, but it sounds like you're questioning if this second year team can engineer the magnificent machine they did. If anything, you should look up to teams like this. Yes, the students designed, fabricated, and brainstormed this robot. I can confidently say they're one of the best rookie teams I've seen this year, because of the students.

Again, if this is a misunderstanding, I do apologize, however your wording makes it sound differently.

Brainstormed: 100% students
Designed: 100% students (with help learning inventor)
Machined: We only really have one full time mentor, Andrew Hedge. The students did everything but the tig welding and a few pieces that had to be precision milled. (for liability reasons students weren't allowed into Andrew's work where he machined the pieces.)
Assembled: 100% students (The mentors was there helping, but only making sure we didn't do anything stupid.)
Debugging: 100% students.

We have about 13 students that show up regularly.

I am not sure about our budget but I believe we were very well under $4000 for the robot alone.

I (Austin) am the only student that has been on another FRC team while in high school with team 2493 my freshman year. (another student had been part of another team but not as an official high school student.) Andrew competed with the "Thunderbots" 980 in high school. He has now graduated from college and mentors us.

Thanks!

Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"

As one of the "part-time" mentors for Code Orange, I can say that yes, this machine is 100% student designed and assembled, and as Austin said, almost entirely student machined as well. The students on the team are extremely self-motivated and put in very long hours to put this together.

Yeah, what George said.

If you want to see a truly INSPIRED team that is probably the best representation of what FIRST is all about, check out Code Orange. They are the real deal and an inspiration to teams at all levels of FIRST.

Check them out when you are in St. Louis. They will be more than happy to share the Code Orange magic with you.

BTW, they are mostly home schooled students who work out of the mentor's garage. As George said, they are highly motivated, enthusiastic students and I am proud to call all of them friends.

Great to hear. I simply asked because I know teams (won't give specifics, they know who they are) where the mentors do significant quantities of the work and in the end make a great result but not student built. I was simply asking because I feel the the more the students did, the better. Great job all and I hope to be able to compete with you.

Edit: And It also gives the teams I ask it to a chance to brag it up in a well deserved manner

And there's nothing wrong with those teams. Mentors are allowed to do work. FIRST has been very clear about this for years.

never said it was against the rules, I just personally don't have the greatest liking of their methods.

anyway: let us get back on subject of praising well done work

Thumbs up Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"

We have 15 registered kids, and three of them are in eighth grade. We probably have 9 or 10 "core" students. Austin and I are the only kids from other teams, and this team is unique in it's %100 student design, brainstorm, assembly, debugging, outreach, and fundraising. I wish we could have machined the robot, but the team didn't have the liability and access to tig-weld and lathe like what I did on my much older, established team. One of Code Orange's mentors spent the time to machine some parts from my CAD drawings at his work. Code Orange students jigsawed, band-sawed, snipped, hacked, sanded, chop-sawed, painted and did whatever else they could to make a great robot from the team's home garage!
Thanks for asking- Student work is an important trait to have on a FIRST team!
