2012 KOP Wheels failing.

We switched our robot to the 2012 kit of part wheels and after driving around a bit we had this issue:

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m1...s4zo1_1280.jpg

The plastic around the bearing failed and the bearing came loose on the shaft. This was the middle wheel on the standard kit frame, at first we just thought it was a fluke however recently another wheel failed the same way.

So has anyone had this issue? We were thinking about filling the gaps around the bearing with epoxy so they hold up better.

Re: 2012 KOP Wheels failing.

We had a similar issue with one of our direct driven wheels. The area that the hub was attached to was stripped of material and the threads of the bolt pattern were stripped. For us, I don't think it was due to the product though, we caught the edge of a bridge while driving off of it and I think that's what caught the wheel and sort of pulled it apart from the hub.

We never really subjected these wheels to an excessive large load, no bump just general driving and turning yet it still did this.

Re: 2012 KOP Wheels failing.

We haven't noticed any issues through three events--no bump driving, but a little bit of bridge fun.

Re: 2012 KOP Wheels failing.

Our team had several of our KOP wheels fail this year. Unfortunately it was because of loctite! We switched them for IFI and Plactions in week 5.

I have seen several KOP wheels fail around the bearing like the one in your picture. This year I thought we would give them a try as the wheels had a nice grip to them but going over the bump was going to be too much for them.

Re: 2012 KOP Wheels failing.

We went through two events without any problems with these wheels. However while we did do regular bridge work we did not go over the bump at all and I suspect that might be where these wheels aren't up to the task.

Re: 2012 KOP Wheels failing.

We have had the same thing happen to our plaction sheels. The plastic around the hubs broke and so this year we just used colsons and never had those problems.

Re: 2012 KOP Wheels failing.

For the record no loctite was anywhere near the wheel.
Seeing this is an somewhat common issue we will probably fill the area around the bearing with some epoxy to help it hold up.

Re: 2012 KOP Wheels failing.

I saw a few of these that were broken at Championships.

You said that the first one that broke was one of the middle wheels. What wheel was the second one that broke? Do you remember?

We broke one of the middle wheels, switched it then broke the other side middle wheel a week or so later.
