switching joysticks
what would happen if we were to use a joystick with a 9k pot instead of the 100k pots that the original controllers have?

You would only have a range of values from about 230 to 255. You could compensate for that somewhat in software, but once you stretched it out to full scale the resolution would be pretty bad.
