Old Re: pic: 294 teaser

It does look like a turret plate.

I looks custom made, what kind of material is it?

From the picture it looks like wood.

Old Re: pic: 294 teaser

It's definitely plywood, not sure what type or grade though.

It's clearly not a functional part for the robot, and seems to be some sort of statue or sculpture of an angry god.

I think I know exactly what part that hole pattern goes to...

I'm guessing this is the wood prototype before the metal version for the final bot is made.

Does this part mount anywhere near the 14 lb. shooter wheel ????

im guessing plywood prototype of a turret , made on a waterjet at GKN. Im guessing the real part will be aluminum, and at least 3/8 thick(probably 1/2inch)...

294 welcomes 295 back to the LA Regional this year!

False, True, True, False

We set a record at the GKN waterjet; the code to make the part was 3700 characters long and took nearly 2 hours to cut. The best part is that the part came out perfectly. No need to redesign or remachine here!

Old Re: pic: 294 teaser

It's the plywood backing that was used to cut the 3/8 thick aluminum turret plate (a sprocket) on the GKN water jet.

The teeth look #25 pitch to me, wouldn't that make the aluminum plate 1/8"?

Old Re: pic: 294 teaser

It looks more like a timing belt pulley (a really really big one!) than a chain sprocket, so 3/8" makes sense.

Old Re: pic: 294 teaser

#25 chain

1/8 aluminum plate sprocket

204 teeth

Good catch Adam. You and Ryan are correct. 3/8 would be way too heavy!

You have us beat. We cut out a 180 tooth 25 series sprocket for our turret. Ours was done with a laser though.

The real test will be in the crater. See you in Atlanta!

You have us beat too. We used a sawzall to cut the center hub and spokes out of a swamp cooler pulley

AND how to you plan to place the chamfer on the sprocket teeth?? I can think of some interesting solutions but am curious as to your plans...

.... or are you leaving them square and hoping for the best by keeping the chain tension "extra tight" since I assume this will lie in a horizontal plane....

GKN's largest lathe can handle 20" diameter parts, which is where we will be doing our work. If it really came down to it we could stick it up on our VTL we use for our 6ft diameter engine nozzles. :-)

Well, wouldn't be the first time 294 over engineered something.... lol

(i.e. last years "cheesing" of the upper A-frame)

Old Re: pic: 294 teaser

Very nice. We cut a 183 tooth timing pulley for our turret on a laser cutter out of quarter and eighth acrylic. Works very well.

We made our weight and it never broke! Good luck to the Greybots. See you in LA and Las Vegas.
