So, as the Week 1 Regionals are starting tomorrow, I thought to start a new thread for the new and incoming class of Dean's List Finalists! It's amazing to see the 19 other members from the 2 classes of winners previous (Classes of '10 & '11), and see the individual impacts that each of them have made to their own communities and FIRST.

But, it's not just the 20 that make up the Dean's List as a group.

There have been 194 deserving students over the past two years that have been designated Dean's List Finalist members for their participation & service within FRC, FIRST as a whole, and their own teams/schools/communities/states/nations. And each one of them have made and are hopefully continuing making a large impact on our culture and generation. So, let's see what happens this year!

If you can, just PM me or post on the thread of the Dean's List students from your individual regionals, and we'll keep a running tally on the thread of the students. :D Or if you're an avid fan of Twitter like me, tweet when it happens! You can tweet me directly (@iamlegend360); or we could use a hashtag (#itsthedeanslist, maybe?)

Congrats to the incoming class of 2012, and GO FIRST!

-Kyle J., Member of Peachtree & Championship Classes of 2010

I'll be posting up on the thread all the winners when all the regionals today have posted their Dean's List winners; however, if you have information on the winners at the individual regionals, post it up on the thread!

For WPI Alex Ouellet (me) was team 348
Brian was team 1100

Also out of curiosity I think it would be interesting to post whether or not they were a finalist last year and what their grade is, as FIRST has said preference would go to juniors. I think it would be interesting to see how that influences the final breakdown.

For all the 2012 Dean's List Finalists, we will be releasing a guide on what you should do when you get to CMP probably right after Week 6/MAR CMP/FiM State. And thanks goes to Crystal (Waffles) for the guide, it helped a lot of the finalists last year and turned out to be a great resource.

Also, if you are a Dean's List finalist, we have a Facebook group for you! However, it is INVITE only. So, to join, PM me (Kyle J. Fender) or Crystal (Waffles) so that we can get you linked in to the Dean's List network!

Don't be afraid to ask questions; we're glad you guys are here and we're proud of your accomplishments! From the Classes of 2010 & 2011, welcome!

Also, side note: if you happen to be the lucky teammate/coach/mentor of a Dean's List finalist, and happen to have the essay that was used for entry, send it over to fender.kyle@gmail.com if you want to exhibit why your team nominated that Dean's List student . We're working on a blog for the Dean's List, and hopefully those stories/essays will give onlookers and new people to FIRST an insight on how FIRST has affected those into becoming amazing people that are constantly changing the world we live in.

Sincerely,

Kyle J.

My count says that there are going to be 114 Dean's list finalists this year, is this correct?

Close, I think; I'll check just to make sure.

Also, here's something from Alexander Ouellet, one of the 2011/2012 Dean's List finalists:

Attention Dean's List Finalist and Teams!

This year as a way to both appreciate and track the Dean's List Finalist I came up with an idea with the help of some volunteers.

We'd like to create a quilt made up of patches from every single Dean's List Finalist from the 2012 season. The quilt will be brought to championship and displayed so that everyone can see the different finalist and where they come from. This way people can see the names and teams of every single finalist. Hopefully this will not only make a great display, but it will also help people appreciate all the finalist from this year and bring them together.

The idea is to make the quilt out of patches made from the team shirts (or just fabric if that doesn't work for some) of each finalist. Each patch would have the finalist name and team number easily visible. The finalist could also sign the patch or add whatever personal touches they want. The idea here is to create a cohesive framework of each and every finalist to show not only who they are and where they come from, but what makes them special. So please make it as personal and special as possible!

Each patch should measure 12.5 inches by 12.5 inches. The effective size will only be 12x12 due to a 1/4 inch seam so be sure to carefully plan out the patch !

Please spread the word to your finalist from each regional to send in their patch! This will only work if every single finalist sends in a patch and I'd love this to get done! I'm not asking for any money for this, just pay the postage on the patches!

I plan to finish the quilt over April vacation so please get them in ASAP. If you know a finalist or even know someone on the same team as one PLEASE GET THEM THE NEWS!

Questions and Comments are welcome.

Please mail the patches to:

Dean's List Winners from South Florida

Katie Austin - 1902 & Jessie Poen - 1557!!!

We are so proud of Katie. She is an amazing student, and a joy to have worked with for 6 years. Here is her nominating essay:

Jan 2006 during the first few days of Exploding Bacons Rookies season several mentors were showing prototypes of their manipulators. After the students had left, Katie Austin, one of the students little sisters, tugged on the shirt of a 6ft 6 man she didn't know and told him that his design wouldn't work. He stared at it, then stared at her, then back at it and asked her mom how old she was. “11” her mother replied. “Is she in middle school yet?” he asked. The answer was yes, 6th grade. “Then she is on the team” declared the mentor. “Are you sure?” replied the mom. “Yes,” said the mentor, “she’s right, it won't work. She doesn't know the correct terms to use, but she’s right.” Thus began Katies career with Exploding Bacon and our teams tradition of allowing younger siblings to join giving us our family friendly atmosphere. 6 years later, Katie is now in her second term as the president of Exploding Bacon, and the face of the team.

When Katie began 7th grade, she started an FLL team at her school, the “Bacon Bits.” Katie was a leader on her school’s team for 2 years, heading the team’s Research Award effort, and won a 2nd place trophy at the state championship. She has continued her FLL involvement by mentoring teams and volunteering at competitions.

While on her FLL team, she continued being a full member of 1902. In 8th grade she became a member of our outreach team doing community demos as well as corporate presentations. She has presented in front of representatives of companies such as Lockheed Martin, Electronic Arts, JC Penny, Fluid Power Society, PTC, and BAE Systems. These presentations have lead to donations to the team of over $95,000! In fact, in her 8th grade year Bacon was the first FRC team that reached out to Electronic Arts. Katie and the other team members impressed the company so greatly, they asked us to help coordinate their donation of $5000.00 to 9 teams in the area.

Katie has also been a student ambassador for the North Carolina Regional and at the Orlando Regional for 3 years. She has toured the Mayor of Ocoee and an NC State senator. She has also been a student ambassador at the World Championships in 2010. Last year she volunteered at Champs doing field reset and had the honor of working the Einstien Field.

The epoch of Katie’s outreach efforts was the Learning 2011 event at Walt Disney World. Katie received the opportunity to explain the Ideals of FIRST to Bill Clinton as well as executive business leaders. Dean Kamen invited 2 FRC, 2 FTC, and 2 FLL students to represent FIRST at this event, brining all 6 up on stage during his speech. Later, Dean sat with these students, and asked for their suggestions. “How can we get more people interested in FIRST?” Dean inquired. The group had a brainstorming session, and finally Katie said “ThinkGeek.com is a highly popular website in the engineering community. They once tweeted about Exploding Bacon, and our website instantly had so much traffic that the sever crashed.” Dean, impressed with Katie’s creativity, asked his assistant to note that FIRST needs to get in touch with ThinkGeek.com.

Katie has participated in over 200 outreach events in the last 7 years. This year she led the team’s Exploding Science Outreach Project. Four 1.5 hour modules of hands on experiments in Chemistry, Physics, Simple Machines and Wind Power. Bacon visits afterschool programs and can teach up to 30 3rd through 5th graders per time. This leadership gives her the exceptional ability to be one of the Chairman’s Award presenters for three straight years.

While she forgoes the ability to drive the robot in preference of being a Chairman’s presenter, she is still a high achieving member of the mechanical design team. She is currently enrolled in advanced classes at Winter Park High School while dual enrolling at Valencia College. Katie aspires to follow her grandfather’s footsteps, and become an aerospace engineer. She has applied to UF and UCF but her top choice is Embry Riddle Aeronautics University, and is feverishly filling out scholarships to be able to afford the $40,000 per year tuition. She is still applying to other institutions, and her final decision will rest upon which opportunity will have the greatest impact on her life and her goal to someday work in the space program.

She has been a force on Exploding Bacon from the very first regional when a judge visiting the pit commented on her being such a cute little thing. The student replied “Hello, my name is Katie, I’m 12. What would you like to know about my robot?” To the judge’s amazement, this young girl proceeded to explain technical aspects, and answer complicated questions.

After graduation, Katie’s involvement in FIRST will not cease. As a college student she plans to continue mentor a local team. Ultimately, she aspires to be a leader in the engineering field, Katie will someday be the prototype that future FIRST students will try to emulate.

That is really awkward.......

Welp, that's why I asked for corrections; because things like this happen with the usfirst.org Event Results. Thank you so much for telling me; I'll get it fixed right away on CD & the "it's the dean's list." website!

Guys, we are getting set to start stuff up for Championships, so I need one thing before I release a couple details hopefully today:

Check the list on itsthedeanslist.wordpress.org for the list of names & teams for 2012. IF you name or team is incorrect, I need you to PM me immediately! I want to give this complete list to Crystal for the t-shirts by Wednesday, and I really don't want mistakes on the t-shirts; and I'm sure you wouldn't want yours to be incorrect either on the shirt.

Unfortunately I will not attend to the championship.
When and Where can I see online the announcement on the dean's list winner?
I really want to get one of those T shirts you mentioned.. what do I need to do in order to ship it to my address?
(I am a dean's list finalist)

I'll be emailing the DL coordinator at FIRST for an answer on whether there will be a webcast/online announcement for the DL ceremony; hopefully there is one, because I probably won't be attending due to finals.....

And the t-shirts..........give me 2 hours, and I'll give everyone all the details on how to order the shirts, and everything else. :D

Congratulations to all the winners!

The first year of the Dean's List award I made a button for all the finalist who would be attending championships. The goal is to be able to recognize each out in the wild.

This year I'm continuing in the tradition with a button. I'm not attending championships so I need the collective help of you all to punch out as many as you can and give them to pit admin on Wednesday. Pit administration is very good about giving them out the finalist, and everything should work like the last years.

Below is the button template, please make as many as you can.

If there is a webcast of the ceremony, I think it would be awesome if it wasn't Ustream or Justin.tv or something else. A simple WMP stream would be best; I know I wouldn't be able to watch anything else at school(where I'll be if I'm not at champs; still unsure if I'm going or not)

I have the details! It only took two hours; give or take an hour . However, since some of the information is for Dean's List finalists and winners only, we have put the information on a password-protected part of the it's the dean's list. (http://itsthedeanslist.wordpress.com/) in the member's only section. To get the password, please PM me, or check on the FIRST Dean's List Finalist Facebook group.

It's coming down to the wire now; get pumped! GO FIRST!

Hey guys! If you want to order a tshirt, you MUST be in the Dean's List group on facebook in order to access the directions on how to place your order, otherwise if you do not have a facebook, please email me: kawaiineko411@gmail.com

I've only got 15 tshirt orders so far, and will be calling them in tomorrow so that we'll have them in time for Championships.

This is the final design:
http://www.ooshirts.com/d/60120524

For those of you asking how to get them if you're not at Championships, you still order them by making a payment on Paypal, and then make note of it in the comments section, and then I will email you post Championships to arrange for shipping.

***ORDERS AND PAYMENTS WILL BE TAKEN UNTIL WEDNESDAY THE 18TH @ 5pm EST***

If payments are made after 5pm, there is no guarantee that you will have a shirt reserved for yourself at Championships. Your funds will be held in the Paypal account until I make a second order of shirts post Championships (depending on popularity). Otherwise, I will refund you via Paypal. I cannot guarantee that Paypal will refund the full amount you paid though. So by submitting a payment after 5pm, you are agreeing to the terms that you may not get your full $15 back if requesting a refund.

Thanks!
Crystal.

Hey guys!

I'm a 2012 finalist winner from Midwest and I guess I completely missed the information on the t-shirts. Is there going to be another order of them at any point if more people are interested? I'm really interested in buying one and I'm really bummed out I didn't see this until now, so if you could let me know I would be very interested in buying one!

Thanks,
Jess

Hi guys
I'm a 2012 finalist from the Seattle Olympic Regional. Sorry this is really late, but just saw this thread. My last name is spelled wrong the "u" should be a "n."

Also I would be interested in buying a tshirt, even if my name is spelled wrong. I just would really love to have a tshirt.

Its my first time I'm going to the Championships and I hope to meet all of you in St. Louis.
