We worked with 701 on the practice field to come up with a strategy to double balance. On the field, we accomplished the very first ever double robot stack balance in competition!

First off, great job! Its always great to see amazing and creative Ideas like this.
Secondly,
I hate to be the Debbie downer, but this has been done once before by a little known team.....1501. Here is a link to the thread about theirs. http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104766

Way to go 2865, great driving! Just to clarify... Team 1501 did a stacking maneuver a few weeks backs with a third bot to help sandwich the stacked bot. Our maneuver today was done unassisted, which is pretty unique. Now to move on to three robot balancing tomorrow afternoon!

Do I say Stack Attack?

It isn't exactly one robot on top of another but one robot on top of two. I'm not sure how they managed it because I saw it while browsing through tumblr.

Very impressive. Just curious, was your current seed a factor in your decision to forgo balancing on the co-op bridge to try out the stacked balance?

701 has a great design for stacking, and this isn't to take away from an excellent robot design fro balancing. However, I must disagree with you on 1501's method of balancing.

Based on the footage I've seen (here's a video of their triple balance technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVpnRhMPLzs&feature=player_embedded#!) It would appear that 1501 was capable of balancing with 4028 on top of it without another robot. I reached this conclusion via observing the lack of significant movement of 4028 on top of 1501.

This isn't to detract from your balance, which does indeed appear to be the first double balance of its kind. I'm just trying to point out that 1501 appeared to be no less capable of pulling off this feat.

Thats pretty incredible, i think the flat top, versus the "pick-up truck bed" is an interesting design choice. Think about getting 3 of 701's on top of each other balancing. That would be "stack"tacular :)

That was too cool!

Great work on this double stack!

That...was...epic! Reminds me of Breakaway. Nice work.

t's so awesome to see our friends on 701 successfully pull this off!

The outcome for the Fembots wasn't quite so nice when they tried this in Sacramento.
Check out this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuKg1aTt6uI&list=UU6ii38AN2Qt9Dqs2nWMwWvw&index=1&feature=plcp) at the 4:23 mark. Luckily both survived and were back in action the next match.

I uploaded my footage of this. :) The video is from above (but zoomed in close) and just the balance, not the entire match.

Hi Doug
Let me say nice way to implement the two bot stack.
Let me clarify. FRC Team 1501 would be able to stack a second robot and balance the bridge. My question is why? There is more than enough room on the bridge to get two bots. If you watch our stacking footage you will see that FRC Team 4028 never leaves our Flight Deck so FRC Team Team 1756's bot was not needed to hold them there. They were there as an insurance policy. We chose to do a three bot stack during the eliminations only.

Well, as a member of 1501........

FINALLY!:p

Great job guys!! It's great to see another stack happening!

This was awesome to watch on the webcast, but I don't understand why they said this was the first in the world. It has happened before, multiple times...

Now we all want to see 1501 carrying 701 carrying 2865!

Can 1501 handle two robots?

I'm sure they could, they have a very powerful drivetrain.

I'm assuming this was more of a "proof of concept" balance, to let teams know what to expect in elims. More importantly, this was AWESOME! Great job to all teams involved

Exactly, we werent ranked very high, and so it was good to show what we're capable of to increase our chances of being picked. There could be more to it but i'm not at the competition so couldn't tell.

When we practiced, the stacking, at the shop we had one robot strapped to our Flight Deck and was able to push another non-operational robot up the bridge, so yes, I think we could carry two other robots on our robot.
That would be sweet to see.

Just for grins, you ought to do a CG calculation on the implied triple stack. I'm doubting that you could get up the bridge incline angle without tipping being immediately in your future! But, to be sure, it would be epic to watch the attempt! :)
