Im really excited now!!!! Looks like we have the most robots who have previously balances! (21)

We can triple balance but never have don eit in competition. We discovered the other day we can hang an incredible 17 inches off the edge of the bridge! (not including bumpers). Our shooter is being improved for a quicker speed up time and we are ready to sit under that fender all day long and then if we get defended against just go back to the key. :D

Anyone feel free to stop buy our pits and take a look at our robot :) we'll be glad to show you everything on it and how we got to that design.

Yet again the organization of the teams into divisions is impeccable. They really are good at that. Of course, we all want to be on the winning team (Duh!) But the question is, who do we think will come out on top? There are a lot of perpetual good teams in each division, but I'd like to think that some team will pull up out of nowhere and take the division. 25 was missing from the quick list at the top and they had downright amazing performance at Mid-Atlantic Regional on week 7. Naturally, your guess is as good as mine when it comes to winners at the Championships. Any opinions on the matter would be nice, I just want a "heated" discussion.

Good luck from Team 1918. (I think. We're not a one man team.) ;)

I dont have data to back it up, but from my brief observation of the divisions it seems like Galileo will be hard pressed to claim Einstein.
I wouldnt put much into that prediction though, as i have simply been skimming the division lists

I'm very curious to see what alliance will come out of this division, with its very solid middle tier. We have some multiple event winners here such as 16, 25, 48, and 148, but only one of those has won every event they went to. Good job Bomb Squad! But we have to worry about the great teams like 67, 341, 469, 987, 1114, 1717, and 2056 who will be across the field from us on Einstein, and who really seemed to mop up the events they attended.

Bomb Squad looks like a favorite in this division; perhaps they'll team up with the Robowranglers like they did at two of their regionals  or maybe they'll team up with the 25, the first pick and champion of MAR. But there is just such a strong middle tier, including a ton of Michigan teams that qualified from the State Championship, that the eventual winners of this division are very hard to predict. With 100 teams per division, there will certainly be amazing machines that do not make eliminations. And we have by far the most teams that have triple balanced in the past - I really think this division is going to be a Loch Ness fest in elims. Good luck to all teams, and I can't wait to see how this division unfolds!!

Nice... I am soo excited to be sharing the field with 148 among all the other teams... It will be good though to be around them. Brings back some good memories from back in Dallas.

I think there is a lot of good teams that might be underrated in this division should be a blast though to see this play out. Btw, as far as alliances go there a few close teams here, I could very well see a 16-148 reunion from earlier in the year and a 103-25 union with alot of history. Also a michigan alliance of something like any 2 of 33-2054-1918 could be good too.

There are a lot of good teams in the division that are familiar with each other to some extent.

Now that the sorting hat has put us all into our divisions, this looks like this will be a fun competition. Although Archimedes seems to be a bit stacked, all divisions have excellent robots. Team 180 is ready to bring its all, and compete for the honor to represent Galileo on Einstein field. To 168, 744, 801, and 4013, we are all going to be travelling a long way from home, but lets show everyone what us Florida teams have to offer. Good luck to everyone, and have fun!

While both 48 and 2826 are amazing shooters I think that 269 made the biggest difference in those final matches, we were starved on ammo and they really filled up your side of the field.

Glad to see we are in the same division by the way, hope we get a chance to play together!

I was kinda hoping we finish what we started in Queen City.

Looking forward to next week. Our first trip to St. Louis and we left Queen City with a much better robot. If anyone needs anything while out there, stop by 1038's pit and we can help.

Good Luck all!!

I Love this division already! No body has a Clue of who will win. I know theirs those teams that are gonna be up there, but there is so many great robots every alliance in the Elimination Rounds will have to work EXTREMELY hard to keep winning. WE CANT WAIT TO GET THERE!!!!!

We are long but we hang off the edge by about 18 inches. the weight balance and breaking system made it easy to triple at MAR that and 341 stinger lol. Here is a pic http://www.midatlanticrobotics.com/

JABot67

With all the talk about wide and long bots, I almost think it's better to have one long bot to triple balance with. It is way easier to balance two wides and a long bot with a dingus/stinger than it is to balance 3 wide bots using nothing but driving skill. Keeping that in mind, it would be nice to have a list of all the robots that have a triple balance assist mechanism.'

Edit: I don't know very much about what teams have have a triple balance dingus since many probably have added them at competitions, but here's a short list (of robots that I know for sure have a dingus) that people can add on to: 25, 33, 148, 2054, 2337, 3322. 1718 has brakes on their train that stop robots from sliding around on the bridge; this turned out to be very useful for triple balancing at MSC. Wow, I don't even know if fellow Michigan teams like 1918 and 573 have these devices. Please add on to this list!

Clinton, 2169 is wide and 868 is long but not the full 38 inches (I suspect they are around 28x32 or so).

We technically are long, but we are only about 28X26, so nearly a square.

Feel free to add to the list whatever you want or just say something and I'll edit it into the first list I posted. Stingers is definatly good idea to add. I only ask if you repost the list that you make it the smallest font so the thread is not over-run by giant list of numbers.:)

1515 is long, but only 30" Long, making us take only 2" more space than a wide robot.

48 has a stinger/kickstand. Simple cylinder firing vertically down. Tested/practiced, not used (yet) in actual matches.

Team 4159 is a wide robot!

3259 has a stinger (we call it a "stomper" due to its size) and we are a wide bot (we can take up as little as 25" with bumpers).

Additionally, while we are almost 60" tall, due to the design of the "stomper" we are G20 compliant (we never exceed 60"). We've practiced with it, but haven't used it in actual matches.

Galileo looks pretty good they have good michigan teams i think 33, 573, and 2337 might have a chance. They all did pretty good at MSC!!

573 is long, but with the overhang on the front of the robot we only need 29inches of bridge space if on the end (including bumper). We do not have a special balancing tool, but we have tripled before.

Please note 815 should be listed as a wide bot, 37w x 27l, and with ball feeder on the front & back. We can offset the bumpers with other teams to be more compact

Hey guys 281 is a long bot but we have mecanum wheels so we can be long and also a moving turret shooter so we can shoot long (for what it is worth) We have a bridge lowering arm that we are working on so we can put on the bot upon arrival. We look forward to competing with all of you

We have had a kickstand on our robot since Troy, although we have triple balanced without any form of balance assist in less than 20 seconds (with 85 and 910). Our kickstand has also been tested, and we have a triple balance with it (with 4002 and 453). We *should* have some other tricks up our sleeves for next week though ;)

Ok, Galileo, let's fill this scouting sheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhBQX1mbZaC_dGFJX19SYTk4RWxhaU9BbU0tenl3X 2c) out!

Hey, we might be getting a bit cluttered here, but can we also get type of drivetrain along with the other info on each bot?

For example, 48 is 6WD (key info to know).

Optional info: 2-speed, 8" pneumatics, no center drop

*****

The difference between a 4WD wide and 6/8WD wide is not insignificant where bridge balancing is concerned.

Of course, if we'd start a Galileo pictures thread like the others, maybe a lot of that info would be self-explanatory from the pics!

EDIT - OK - the Google Doc linked in Post 56 above (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhBQX1mbZaC_dGFJX19SYTk4RWxhaU9BbU0tenl3X 2c) is awesome. We should all be editing that. Thanks!

Similar to what I did in previous years (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=735425&postcount=165), I ran through 200 simulated qualification match schedules (with 9 matches per team, using the FIRST match generator).

I used each team's highest adjusted opr at any event to choose that team's "best event". Then, for that event, I used their unadjusted OPR for their contribution to a match. I also used the hybrid OPR, bridge OPR, teleop OPR to help calculate the standings. For the co-op bridge, I summed the co-op OPR for all 6 robots in the match and compared that to a threshold. When back-testing against regionals, if the threshold was chosen to be close to the number of actual co-ops at the regional, it had a relatively high correlation to the actual results on the co-op bridge. Almost all regionals had a correlation co-efficient of between 0.6 and 0.85. However, at the Michigan State Championship, the correlation coefficient was only 0.3. I believe this is because almost all of the robots there were able to balance so the balances that didn't happen weren't be cause of the robots, but because of luck. I used this method for calculating the co-ops, trying to get a co-op percent of around 60% (higher then most regionals, but lower then MSC). Overall, this isn't a very good way to do it, as it punishes teams at early regionals and regionals where teams did not co-op that much. However, it's included to help simulate the randomness of the rankings this year. All OPR data is from Ed Law's spreadsheet.

I calculated the results for each of the 200 simulated qualification schedules, and then looked at some statistics from the aggregate results.

Since the standings are much more complicated this year, and the co-op bridge is so important, and there isn't a very good way to simulate it, I looked at both the ranks, the number of qualification points, and the number of wins.

Everyone should attend Karthik's presentation (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=105540) at the championships where he covers "Why 'OPR' is a flawed indicator in Rebound Rumble".

Hmmmmmmmmmm SPAM was #1 seed at both of their regionals, finalist in one and winner in the other, 2nd highest OPR & World ranking in the division, Joe's simulation seems to like them, yet noone posting seems to think they are a contender. They must be flying under the radar. I have a feeling that they may have kept a few tricks in their bag just for the Championship. It's been 10 years since their last Einstein appearance; could this be their year?

They must be flying under the radar.I don't mind that too much, actually...

Good luck, everyone!

I just wanted to post what my research has showed me about the teams on Galileo. I came up with this data by going down the entire listof the field. Next I looked up these teams on FRC Spyder. Anytime that scored 200+ in any of the categories I wrote down. After I figured out those teams I copied the information onto an excel spreadsheet.

The numbers I used were a mix from each of the competitions. For example: Say a team went to three competitions. At Competition A they had their best teleop points. At Competition B they had their best hybrid. At Competition C they had their best balancing. So I would used the teleop from A, the hybrid from B, and the balancing from C.

Next I added all the numbers together in order to come up with a grand total of points. I then arranged the grand totals in descending order. I came up with the following:

Team # HP BP TP Grand Total
2054 227 200 289 716
33 195 130 380 705
1918 235 140 269 644
25 175 120 329 624
2337 234 150 239 623
1718 166 150 260 576
2016 205 140 209 554
3322 166 100 285 551
180 175 120 209 504
2169 155 30 317 502
103 136 110 223 469
48 154 70 240 464
1323 132 50 240 422
801 116 90 215 421
399 93 110 206 409
868 148 50 211 409
772 137 50 204 391
148 97 50 208 355

I am well aware of the fact that FRC Spyder doesn't count the elimination matches, and therefore this spredsheet isn't 100% accurate. This is my first time doing anything like this so any feedback woul be greatly appreciated.

I like the Michigan bias, first of all (6 of the top 10 are Michigan teams :D ) That being said, BP isn't a very accurate metric without adding some sort of coopertition compensation. I don't have the data in front of me right now, but I am sure that the rankings would change with coopertition.

The primary problem with this method is that FRC Spyder calculates alliance scores not individual robot scores. As such this will produce a bias towards teams in deeper regional events (ie MSC and MAR). The top ten appears to confirm this bias as the top eight teams are from these two regions. When looking at this data, be sure to consider this fact.

The bigger problem is that you need to normalize to either a per match basis or a 10 match schedule, as many events got more or less than 10 qual matches.

It would be interesting to see how that list would look with the rest of the division considered. For instance, 573 at MSC scored 234 HP, 170 BP, and 239 TP for a total of 613 points. That places them in between 2337 and 1718, and I'm sure there are other teams who would be thrown into the mix.

Was there a reason you never tried reversing the orientations of one of the long bots so that the CG was closer to the center than the edge?

Looks nice!

Was there a reason you never tried reversing the orientations of one of the long bots so that the CG was closer to the center than the edge?

3193's weight is actually front-biased a bit, so they were in the proper orientation. Note what happened whenever we applied forward force to the center robot later in the video - which way did 3193 tilt? :)

They do not have a stinger or bridge tender in the rear of their bot. There is actually not much at all back there - the internal guts of their bot are laid out very differently from ours. Plus the pivoting arms let either of us shift the CG further toward the front.

They might have had a similar result driving up backwards and tilting their arm all the way back, but I think we prefer this configuration; plus it was more symmetric and therefore looked cooler!

48's CG is very slightly rear of center, but with the stinger, we kinda need to be pointing that way. As you can see, we can hang quite a bit of the rear bot off the bridge and be comfortably balanced. Tilting the arm forward helps with stability. You can be assured we'll be pushing ours as far forward as possible, into contact with the center bot during any triple opportunities - we promise we'll be gentle!

For the record, the center "bot" in practice (donated by Team 46 ;) ) was close to a max length 28" widebot frame.

Yes It is time for a SPAM appearance in Einstein.

I really like that you are looking at the data but... this is kind of bad math gone wrong scenario. As others have stated, you have two factors contributing to a lot of possible error.

#1 12 matches at FiM & MAR versus 8-10 matches most other regionals. If you normalize per match, you will get a much better metric.

#2 Alliance partners. The metric above can be highly dependent on alliance partners. When a robot is scoring around 2X the average, in theory they are only responsible for 50% 0f the points (2X+X+X)=4X & 2X/4X=50%...). Since MSC and MAR are "qualified" events, the average strength of the participant is significantly different from most regionals.

The general trends are often reasonable (highest scorer will be highest), but trying to sort with any sort of fidelity requires additional work.

Look at some of the normalizing functions (dividing by number of matches, normalizing to event strength...). Normalizing function have their own problems as well.
In 2010, from an OPR perspective, 3 robots all at an OPR of 2 (about 2X national average) could actually combine to be worth 8-10 pts. versus the predicted 6 pts. in a match doing zone strategy.
In 2011, at really deep fields, OPR was actually driven down as 60+60+60 would often equal 120 due to the digresive scoring last year. Thus teams taht had really good partners at a strong event might actually see their OPR go down as they more frequently got into the stronger digresive scoring regions .

Team 772 has a Robot Information/Overview page for all teams. Please take a look at it in the attachments below.

Something about our robot that I would like to point out for all teams is that it is Possible for us to triple balance! Our robot can hang 17" off the bridge, taking up only 22" of the bridge (with bumpers).

Good Luck to all teams at Championships!

How is OPR calculated?

efoote868
28-04-2012, 08:29
As far as I understand it, it's a bit of linear algebra. Every match played at an event is loaded into a matrix, and then an attempt is made to find the best solution (the number of points a team contributes to the match).

You can read more about it in this thread
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=75272

There's also a presentation by Dr. Ed Law on theredalliance.com, under scouting.

Great to hear that the Galileo winners were able to take the big prize. I do have one question, though. Our team (766) was in Galileo this year, but my son and I didn't make the long trip to St. Louis. We followed the webcast for a while but had to attend another event when Einstein was played, so we missed getting to see it. I'm curious about this message from Jon Dudas that was sent out to all the teams today:

Thank you for your incredible enthusiasm and Gracious Professionalism throughout the year and at the Championship. We apologize for the technical problems that affected the final matches at our Championship. We will examine all of the facts, report our findings and ultimately solve any and all identified issues.

Can anyone tell me what the problems were?

Though Championships was fun and i am really happy that Galileo won, our team had an unfortunate time there. We had some more ball jamming problems. The drive was acting up again, which was discovered to be a blown Jaguar. Our shooter became less accurate, and not as strong (balls didn't go as far for how fast the wheel was spinning). We couldn't get the accurate shots we got from the fender in Queen City, or the accurate shots we got in Smoky Mountains from the Key. It was a shock to us that we went 4-5 and had only a few co-op points.

We were happy to see our alliance partners 234 and 3259 again. What great teams. They are some of the nicest people i have talked to. We were glad we got to balance once again with 3259, like we did to win the Smokey mountains regional when 234 was dead on the field.

Great Job Galileo!

I cant wait to see how our team does next year now :D Especially cause it will be my last year on the team as a student. :(

Did anyone notice 3173 in Galileo? Just wondering what people thought of arguably the most improved robot from their regional to the championships. We ended up as the 3rd ranked alliance captain and unfortunately lost in the 1st round of elims, but with the strong Galileo competition there really is no shame in that.

Was it any surprise that Galileo won another championship? We had been in the top eight in both our regionals and we didn't even come close to being a top alliance. It was amazing to see a 4th seeded alliance come out Galileo to win the whole thing. Congrats to 180, 25, and 16, for showing what classic teams can do!

As a senior, I can honestly say there was no better way to go out than how we did on Galileo this year. It was a BLAST!

First to 180, 25 and 16. That was an absolutely phenomenal alliance. 16 was an absolute steal, and I don't think anyone else realized their potential for defense. It was so frustrating to be playing with no balls on our side of the field. Great strategy. 180 and 25 were extremely consistent shooters. Amazing alliance. It is also fun being able to say that we beat the world champions in a match. :D

231 and 1714, it was a pleasure to work with you. The strategies that we played were perfect and the matches were probably some of the most exciting that have hit FIRST in a while. I think there were 3 matches that we won by only 1 point, and one was by a human player shot. Strategy was definitely key to our success. I bet we could have taken it to the next level if we had been able to practice the triple balance before the final match. We were sooooo close.

To the refs, great job all weekend, I had absolutely no complaints about the calls made.

To the queuing staff, sorry it took me so long to understand how it worked haha.

All in all, a great weekend, and I hope to have one more chance to drive that robot at IRI. :D
