If you look at the first few seconds of the video, you can see what looks to be a rubber knob, so you're right that it's most likely a solenoid. Plus when it's in mid air, you can hear a slight 'click' sound, which is when it retracts.

As to how it all works together, I have my guesses, but nothing actual.

It's a pressurized CO2 powered cylinder.

Have you considered adding wheels to the legs that hold it upright so it can move while jumping?
