• Special Entertainment – To Be Announced!
I hope we didn't kill the talent show last year!
More so than any year before, I'm banging the drum for 2815 to apply (and we might be organized enough in the summer to do it). Short of Einstein Field, we know the most likely place to find The Man in FRC is in Indianapolis. (Growing up an hour and a half from Charlotte, we know that to be the man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjW9UXoKU2s)...) But first we'll have to firm up that resumι this week in St. Louis.

No, this is new for 2012.
No Talent Show this year.
Something diferent for 2012. :)
Thanks for the information. I'll get our kids working on the application and a new video right away.
If selected we also have a set of items we'd like to donate for the silent auction.
I'm sure people can guess what that would be coming from us.
Do you need team t-shirts for quilt? If yes, where do we mail them if we don't see you at champs.

Any information on shipping for West Coast teams. I remember in years past Scott at then BAX Global was very helpful in lowering shipping cost for west coast teams. Do we have any arrangement this year or are we on our own?

Agreed
I want to see the FiM and MAR champs play off. I vote not having the mentor match to give these 6 teams two more matches across lunch.
When will we find out the time of the webcast on May 15th?

I would like to see the MAR champions face the FiM champions though as an exhibition.

Agreed. No good can come of this. It's not worth the collateral damagae it will cause.

This would be a fun way to earn bragging rights between districts.

I would like to see nothing done that reduces the number of matches or competitive value for non district winners, i.e. the majority of teams in attendance. If the exhibition(s) are held during a time that would not otherwise be used for something beneficial to teams (including the alliance TRIPLE BALANCE PRACTICE that FIRST failed to provide for all CMP alliances), then I would have no problem with them.

While i do want to know what could have been, i don't think this is a good idea... While the factor that played into the finals more then most seemed to be the field issues, there are too many other factors to take into account to replay this. Any of the teams had the ability to win Einstein, and what happened happened. There is no reason to try and replay this, because it would do nothing but cause more problems.
I'm as upset as anyone on how much was sucked out of Einstein because of the problems, but that doesn't mean it needs to be redone.

Also agreed.
Everyone who saw 118 sit there saw what happened to our #1 alliance in Hartford in the 2nd & 3rd game of semis. After a while we simply had to accept the outcome. We could not possibly claim that we were "supposed to win" or that "we would have won if..." Some things just go that way. In Hartford as in Einstein, the winning alliance deserved their trophies.
Someone already said, in another thread, "Let I.R.I. be I.R.I."
Looking over my post it might seem like a grudge is lurking. Not So! Let me quickly add that I still think that 118 made one of the best and most beautiful machines I've ever seen and we all wish the Robonauts nothing but the best!

To answer a few questions -
Any team is invited and encouraged to apply.
The event is free, open to the public, and a great event to attend even if your team is not competing. The atmosphere is fun and competitive. Teams are more relaxed in the pits and it is easy to see designes and talk with teams about their robots.
We don't know about a MAR / FiM playoff. Not discussed yet.
We WILL NOT replay Einstein.

Good choice. Consider the playoffs, but there is no reason to cause more drama on the Einstein subject.

I don't know about Galileo, but on Newton, we were given our triple balance practice time. All we had to do was go up and ask.
Back on subject, thank you so much for not replaying Einstein. MAR vs FiM would be very fun to watch; a best out of 5 during lunch wouldn't take much time away from anyone but the 6 teams involved.

I don't know about Galileo, but on Newton, we were given our triple balance practice time. All we had to do was go up and ask.
Galileo and Newton shared the same practice field. There was a signup sheet, and I know they were following it. There were limited slots - not enough slots to accomodate all 16 alliances in the time between alliance selections and start of elims (12:00 noon, which I would have liked to have seen pushed back a bit). Also, time slots on the signup sheet were farrrr too long - you can learn what you need to know in far less time than 10 minutes. The whole "system" essentially guaranteed that some alliances would be shut out.
Insufficient time for drive teams to get some food, strategize together, and get a bit of triple practice in.
Anyway, how this relates to IRI - I request triple practice opportunities for the elimination alliances there, and hopefully, there will be a comp bridge (or two?) on the practice field to supplement any practice going on on the main field, if that is even possible.

The current plan is to have a full "official" field for practice, but with no electronics. If we are able to do this, there will be three bridges available for use.

Our alliance never got a chance to practice...the earliest time we could get was 11:50. That was rather difficult considering that the elims started at noon and we were in the second match. A schedule could easily be set up before alliance selections ever happen...just base it on when each alliance plays - alliance 1 and 8 go first, then 4 and 5, then 2 and 7, and finally 3 and 6. Each alliance should need only 10 or 15 minutes to see what works best. 10 is normally enough, but with 4 team alliances the extra 5 minutes would be nice to try some different combinations.
Just a thought...

Rather than an Einstein replay, I've been thinking about a 3rd place match up between the Semifinalists on Einstein. I always thought that would be neat to watch. Why not do a 3rd place Einstein runoff match set?
Astrokid248
01-05-2012, 10:38
I'd like to see that too. I know our flight team really wanted to go up against the Eh Team and do a 36 point auton, crazy tele-op, and triple balance to see who had the best shooter and strategy. But replaying Einstein would be very rude to the winning alliance, and would probably be counterproductive. IRI's about making friendships, not destroying any chance of them, and we need to show FIRST that even if they won't stick to the principles they tout, we will.
This may be a dumb question, but where does one go to apply?
NOT a dumb question.

This seems like a vastly better idea than the replay. We get to run our magical triple balance again and it doesn't upset any of the current rankings. Plus the matches would be AWESOME :)!
(I'm also a little biased because I just want to play with 1114/2056 again)

Similar to the MAR vs FiM, each of the various regions could put together their own "regional all-star" alliance for a fun little playoff.
Just imagine, a Texas and West Coast matchup, 1717/254/987 vs 118/148/1477... or maybe you'd like to see 67/469/33 play 1114/2056/188? Oh, the possibilities at IRI  .
However, I fully support placing more emphasis on getting in lots of qualification matches. More matches means better rankings. :D

I would personally like to see a return of the Mentor Match. Not the hokey tournament at lunch time, but a full round of qualification matches (1 match per team) where the robots are operated my mentors, and coached by students. This was a ton of fun back in the day. The role reversal is interesting. Give the students a chance to see what its like to guide the team and alliance, and the mentors a chance to see what its like to take orders and execute a strategy.

Maybe you could come copilot ours - or be the inbounder. If I were driving, that would limit the damage you could do.
I vividly recall our guest copilot in 2005 (name withheld to protect the innocent). I failed miserably at giving him a crash course in operating the controls, and he made poor Amanda Morrison run back and forth re-loading tetra after tetra when he kept dropping it outside the field. But he persevered, scored that tetra, and we still won the match! One of my fonder recollections of IRI of yesteryear.
I think I still have that on tape somewhere.

They'd be there too, but unfortunately I couldn't fit all 5 on an alliance. :D
118, 148, and more recently 1477 are the more well known among FIRST, and more likely to be selected to some sort of "Texas All Star Alliance", which I imagine would be decided by votes from other teams at IRI.
Team 68 Truck Town Thunder has applied.
I'm going to limit my recommendations to teams that have never been to IRI.
In Texas,
1. 624 (http://www.thebluealliance.com/team/624) - CRyptonite has had one of the best shooters all year,
2. 231 (http://www.thebluealliance.com/team/231)- High Voltage had great strategy and made division finals this year.
3. 3481 (http://www.thebluealliance.com/team/3481) - Bronc Botz - for having a breakout season and winning the EI award
4. 3847 (http://www.thebluealliance.com/team/3847) - Spectrum - for winning chairman's, having a great team and a unique defensive strategy
I've just been notified that FRC2168 Aluminum Falcons has officially completed the application. We'd be honored to play if accepted.

Team 359 originally was not planning to attend due to a mentor getting married that Saturday and my daughter being the flower girl.:)
However, my wife gave the OK to go and promised to take lots of pics.
We also just recently learned that our driver is moving to Arizona.:(
He has won 7 of 8 regionals attended, and 2 for 2 in IRI, and will be spending his senior year, hoping to drive for another team at his next home?? We got 2 eager students waiting to take his place (one of which is 3-0 at regionals as co-operator).
Chris and Andy, can you folks follow up for us and the other teams that would require shipment of robots to your event? Last I heard, BAX Global/D.B. Schenker is out.
This will also determine whether we can do the Texas off-season event the following week.
Our video is a work in progress at the moment, I would like to link to a page and then put the video on the page when it is done.
So my question when are the applications actually read?

Application time closes on the 9th of May, and the list of accepted teams is published on the 15th.
BX 1023 just submitted our first application to IRI!
(well at least since Nick and I have been coaching.. not sure before then) :)

Team 340 has applied!
2914 has applied!
We've been working on improvements all season, and we haven't stopped yet. Starting with a group of students, only one of which has a previous year of FIRST experience, we started simple, but didn't stay there. We've gone through 7 or 8 major iterations on our shooter, upgraded our gearboxes, upgraded our intake, and now have a basic vision system working. Our bridge manipulator has worked flawlessly from the beginning, so we've left that alone.
We hope to be the first team from DC to attend IRI!

This makes me sad. The Talent show was the best.
Talent Show
This year, at the 2012 IRI, we are not having a Talent Show. However, the Dean Simmons and the Kamen Brothers band will play, and they are seeking long-lost relatives (guest musicians) who would want to join them for a song or two.

1718 had officially thrown our hat in the ring...we are hoping to have a couple improvements in place if we are invited!
1640 applied as well! IRI is such a blast, and all our rookies (and vets) are really looking forward to the experience if we make it. Good luck to everyone! So many amazing teams applying. :o
What if they did fully hybrid matches with everyone using the kinect?

What if they did fully hybrid matches with everyone using the kinect?
I have a strong feeling that won't be happening.
Rules Changes from 2012 FIRST Game
No Kinect (Due to Space Constraints)
Not to mention that the majority of teams did not invest any time in trying to use the Kinect for hybrid control this year.

Majority means not all. Most teams did not, but some, like 254, did.

Oy. I'm thinking some here aren't quite aware of the nature of 254's Kinect "usage". ;)
Some of you know my opinion on what they did.

254's "usage" was the only that made any sense the entire season.
254's "usage" was the only that made any sense the entire season.
There were some legitimate uses for a very limited subset of situations in my opinion, but not an amount significant enough to affect any team who will play at IRI too negatively.
(My idea of the legitimate use would be for an emergency stop while flying towards co-op bridge if opponent has claimed it already, or steering to balls if your robot does not have a bridge autonomous. I can't really think of anything else that isn't done better by a properly programmed autonomous robot)

Sudden changes of strategy, be it on the field while talking with teams or during the match. For example, during I match 125 on the newton field, if anyone happens to have a video, we were originally set to go to the co-op bridge. However, by the time we shot our two balls, the other alliance had already grabbed those balls. Our Kinect operator successfully drove over and tipped the alliance bridge from across the field before the hybrid period was over, saving us precious time.
Is this advantage an absolute game changer? Absolutely not, but there are some legitimate uses.
On that note, the Kinect ruins the point of autonomous mode and shouldn't be used in future years. Unless it is mounted to the robot, of course.

Guys I didn't mean to start a discussion I was just thought it would be cool to see a 3 vs 3 match all kinect controlled.
If you guys want there is a autonomous discussion here http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1168034#post1168034

Easily the most awesome creativity in FIRST on the field.
I hope they decide to come up with more themes at IRI.

We don't need a Kinect, just a Kinect station! :P
But I suppose lack of space for the station is the reason given for getting rid of the Kinect anyway...

That side of the field is too crowded and we are concerned that there would be multiple interferences for teams trying to use it. We have limited "width" across the field area when we use all of the bleachers in the gym.

Simple solution: put the Kinect stations in the volunteer lounge and the foyer on the opposite end of the gym where there's more room.
Some might bellyache and complain "But then you can't see the field to control the robot!" I say "It's supposed to be hard, it's IRI!" :D

How about up on the running track opposite the big bleachers, with a firepole/inflatable slide for the kinecteers to use to quickly return to the driver stations?

Between matches, $1 to go down the firepole/slide. Money goes toward registration fees for FRC180.
I'd pay it.

yes, we still encourage teams to bring a backpack for an elementary school student. we will post the suggested materials.
teams could also add $30 to the entry fee and we can use it to purchase items. but it is pretty cool to see the variety that teams bring!

Figurative entry fee. Bringing at least one backpack as part of your overall "payment" to IRI has been an event tradition for many years. I did not see that requirement listed in Chris' initial post and wondered if it was still going to be a requirement for 2012.

Does anybody know whether the match schedule when it is ready on Friday will be available in electronic form? Also I noticed that last year the team standings were available Saturday morning and it looks like it is in the same format as from FMS. Can someone confirm that HP BP TP CP will be included in that report? It will be nice to include the Match Results also. My scouting system relies heavily on these data. I hate to have to type in the match schedule.

There is a fantastic Drury Inn and Suites just off the freeway exit closest to the school. About a mile from the school as I remember. Breakfast included...and afternoon/evening snacks. Just sad our team didn't have the money to join the rest of you guys. :(
