View Full Version : Google Doodle~!

Wouldn't it be cool if there was a Google doodle for FIRST? Maybe during next year's kickoff... on the bus ride home from Championships, some of us were talking about designing one, and this is a sketch of what we came up with.
Anyone know any robots that have similar designs to these? The games of the robots are, in order: Logomotion, Breakaway, Lunacy, and Rebound Rumble.

That really looks good! IIRC, there was a way to submit drawings to google for logo ideas, I'm not sure how to find that now, but you should totally try to get it as the logo for a day!

Yeah we can email stuff to an email to submit suggestions... Does anyone know any robots that I could use to make the drawings more detailed, and also so we can put numbers on them?

This! After Google won the Founder's Award, one of the first things I told my teammates was that they needed a FIRST doodle. (:
I really love the sketch! I think it could do well as a standalone image or even an animation.
Please keep us updated on this, I would really like to see your doodle submitted to Google.
Regardless of whether you submit or not, if you decide to refine the doodle, would you share it with your fellow FIRSTers? It is really cool and I would like to see it spread through FIRST, kind of like the "I Love Robots" buttons.
Thanks!

That's a really cool and creative logo. That would be amazing if it did end up as a the google logo for a day or two.
That doodle design is amazing!
Our team's lunacy robot is vaguely "l" shaped!
I will look for a picture...
our breakaway bot was basically a chassis with a winch, so I guess that matches your picture too...
here is our lunacy robot:

http://www.team2399.org/?attachment_id=656 <-- the fan added at competition makes it a little less l-y i guess.

Gracie, do you happen to have any better pictures? I can't really get a good idea from the ones you linked to...
For Breakaway, I remember seeing this orange and purple (I think) one that basically hung on the tower and bounced returning soccer balls into their alliance area... I can't remember which division it was in or if it got to Einstein, but it was at least in the final matches... that is kinda my inspiration for that bot.

The robot you're thinking of belongs to 469. It made it all the way to the Einstein finals,

While everyone remembers 469, there were at least two other robots that actually hung and returned balls (469 did not hang). Team 51 is purple and orange, played in the Galileo eliminations, and seems the likely candidate.
Okay! I've tried to find more pictures! Let me know if he'll work for your doodle or if these don't work either.

I think the easiest way to do this is to take elements from several robots that work, and then have the numbers as the respective years of the games instead of some team's...
But if anyone has reference pictures for those robots, it would be much appreciated! I've been on Google for a while and am having a tough time...
By the way, in 2010 I think our team was in the Newton division...

MAKE IT THE GAME HINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EDIT: since nobody here will actually know the game, somebody will have to contact FIRST HQ to suggest this if we want it to happen.

Instead of making it the Google image during kick off why not make it during nationals? just an idea.::safety:: maybe add some color to it like red white and blue like first?

I think during kickoff it might give people an opportunity to find/go to the regionals/districts in their area~

I think it could do well as a standalone image or even an animation.Imagine if the robot could be driven across the screen!
Google just posted the result of their doodle competition among school kids. There are 400 finalists posted state-by-state and by age groupings. I mention this because it is evident that google is receptive to suggestion about the doodles. Keep at it. Looking for a kickoff display in 2013!

Ah, school's finally out so I had the time to concentrate on drawing :D :D
So here's what I have right now...

Wheels are a pain to draw... lol. All of these are based off of stuff I could find off of CD and Google Images, or in 2012's case, robots who were at WIWI XD
Oh...except the minibot; I couldn't find any clear pictures so I just took one from my team xD
And yeah, I scrapped trying to draw 2009's bot for the L... first, I had trouble finding pictures on Google Images (I haven't looked here on CD...That idea came to me later..haha) and I felt like if I drew a Lunacy bot I should add the trailer, which wouldn't fit...
When do you submit to Google?
suzumebachi
19-06-2012, 15:39
I guess I could do it now... though I'm still tweaking little things because it's fun lol :)

it looks really awesome! But I think you'd have to submit it separately from the doodle 4 google competition, since that has a prompt and you can't use copyrighted material in it. Does google have another way to submit or are you going to try to get in touch with them?
suzumebachi
19-06-2012, 23:30
Yeah, you can send suggestions to them...there's some email address you send stuff to.
Talking to a member on my team who thinks that the "oog" part (lol) of the logo isn't really that clear...and I kinda agree. We were thinking of changing the FIRST logo into Logomotion tubes, having the O become an ubertube (then it even matches the colors of the Google logo!) but then what's the 2010 robot hanging on...?

It would look better if the logo was also hand drawn. Bring in some of that Jack Kamen spirit.

I could give it a shot. I'm not sure how much hand-drawn would work out with people who don't know Jack Kamen... but hey, it could work out. I can get kinda OCD about stuff but I can hand-draw the final once I'm done working out the design...
well here's a WIP of some suggestions my friends made - the FIRST symbol didn't really stand out as letters, and it seemed 2011-heavy... The circle tube will be an ubertube, so the colors all match with Google's logo :D
Though I've also been getting a lot of confusion over the e/Rebound Rumble bot... any suggestions?
And Breakaway bot is now hanging on a random peg or something. Not as cool as hanging on the square shape but....

Hmm, putting in the Rebound Rumble bridge complicates the drawing too much. I really like the way the square and breakaway bot form the lower case g with the inflatables, though. Then again, if you can incorporate the bridge, go for it. Maybe 2011 is on one end and 2010 hangs off the other end. Which breaks several laws of physics by phasing the 2010 bot through the floor, but who cares.
I think your logo drawing is fine, and besides, when someone hovers over the link, they can wiki hop from FRC to Dean Kamen to Jack Kamen.
So who's contacting Google once suzumebachi is done?
suzumebachi
21-06-2012, 10:54
Physics? what is this physics you speak of? XD I guess technically right now it's also going through the floor...
Yeah... well I only really threw the bridge in as an attempt to balance the game elements - take it out and it ends up being all 2011 stuff + robots from the other 2 years... and that would bother me xDD
...re reading the posts...did you mean the FIRST logo itself, not the entire drawing? XD because that would be easy... -.- whoops!
Oh and as for sending it to google...I could unless someone else wants to...haha I dunno what I'd write...O_O
Looking forward to seeing how google responds to this... Either way, this has to happen eventually. FIRST is growing and google will catch on sooner or later; they seem to be showing a lot of interest in technological awareness lately.
Art looks great by the way! :)

Well, cos the robots are clearly drawn (albiet in Photoshop), I figured matching the logo to that drawing style would make it look better. And it totally did. I feel like the cartoon angle is something we should play up. You are right about the balance bridge, it's growing on me. As for the sending it, there frc teams sponsored by Google, right? I was thinking they should suggest it.

Additionally, since the incorporating the FIRST logo into the Google logo violates the FIRST Branding & Design Standards (http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/marketing-tools/brand), you would want to get FIRST's concurrence. Because FIRST has an ongoing relationship with Google, they may also be helpful in getting it submitted to Google.

Oh yeah, good catch! Even if we don't use the actual FIRST logo, this would be representing FIRST and they would probably have to approve of it too...
Gisselle,
When you get this doodle done to your satisfaction, contact FIRST and let them know what you want to do and get their input/assistance. You can find the contact information here

Thanks for the link! Do you think sending some of these to them even if I'm not done might be a good idea? My team once tried to contact FIRST on issues similar to this (we published two childrens' books, and we're working on a third one...) and I heard it took a long time to get through the entire process...
Anywho. Updates :D

It may take awhile, but you really need to start with approval from FIRST if you are going to use any FIRST trademarks (the logo or name). Although it looks like you have removed the trademarks in the last set of pictures you just posted.
I would submit the image that has the FIRST trademarks in them as well as the last set you just posted and ask for an opinion from FIRST.

Hello,
My name is Giselle Koo, and I'm the team Captain of FRC Team 178, The 2nd Law Enforcers.
After it was announced that Google was awarded the Founder Award during the 2012 Championships, many of us thought it would be awesome if robots could take over the Google Doodle for a day. Some of my teammates and I began coming up with a possible design for such a Google Doodle.
Since some of the versions of the design use the FIRST trademarks, someone on the Chief Delphi forum pointed out that this would have to go by FIRST before we could submit it.
I'm still working on the image, and I don't know how Google's Doodle suggestions work (like, if they choose to take up this suggestion - will they use my image or develop their own?) but I would like your opinion on it, as well as potentially working to get Google to actually use it and/or make an FRC Google Doodle (maybe for next year's Kickoff!)
Here is a link to an album with several iterations of the Doodle design. If you would like me to send you the files themselves just ask.

Ah... good catch, thanks!
Couple comments. First, nice job on the letter, it is written well and to the point. When you ask for an opinion from FIRST, opinion on what? You should specify you want an opinion on use of the FIRST trademarks. Next, the person getting this may or may not help you get the doodle in at Google, probably not. When you ask for their help, be specific what you want help with. You want their helping making sure FIRST is OK with the doodle. If they can help gettin to Google, they will let you know.
Hope that makes sense and is helpful
suzumebachi

I'm still working on the image, and I don't know how Google's Doodle suggestions work (such as, if they choose to take up this suggestion - will they use my image or develop their own?) but I would like your opinion on it as a representation of FIRST, as well as using the FIRST trademarks in some of the versions. I hope that Google actually uses the idea of an FRC Google Doodle (maybe for next year's Kickoff!)
How's that? I kinda took out the part about helping us coordinate with Google since it makes it less clear... not sure of any good ways of putting it back in... I left the kickoff comment in, though - I'm guessing this marketing person reading the message would think that an FRC doodle would be cool, too!
Looks good Giselle, I like the change

Thanks for your email. We’ve been interested in getting FIRST featured in a Google Doodle for a while now, so we are very interested in talking to you about this. Would you be available for a call sometime next week to discuss?
Thanks,

So how am I supposed to respond to this...? I mean, I'm going to say yes, but do I give them my contact info or something...?
Send them your contact information and times you would be available. Tell them you are very excited about having an opportunity to work with them towards a common goal.
Omg that's so awesoooome!!! You get to work with FIRST! I understand the fangirl moment haha. Squee is just what I was thinking.... I'm so excited we're really going to see a google doodle :D
