View Full Version : M.A.R.C. 2012 Invite list

Steve Ketron
12-05-2012, 14:03
I want to thank every team that applied to M.A.R.C. this year. We had over 50 teams apply this year. This is a huge step up from the 12 teams in 2008. Last year, I tried to get every team that applied into the competition and this ended up causing a big nightmare for me in the end. With wanting to keep the qual rounds around 9-10 matches per team and some space concerns, I have decided to place the max. team limit at 51. This will allow us to keep the agenda relatively close and give each team 9 qualification matches.

Many amazing teams have applied and my decision to choose the invitees was very difficult. Please understand that I hate telling a team that they can not play but I have to look at what is best for the event. For those that did not make the initial invite list, there is still a chance for you to come and participate at MARC. I will send invites to you if any of the initial teams withdraw from the competition.

I feel like an outsider; 461 is one of 7 teams that are not located in Michigan. :ahh:
Very thankful for the opportunity to be around so many Michigan teams! It's truly an awe-inspiring experience!

Good luck at MARC!

Well, ninja'd by my own teammate, but MARC is one of the best events I've been to. It's relaxed, yet competitive, and the people there are some of the best I've met in FIRST.

Not totally, no. The head referee of MARC, Gary Voshol, is pretty good about posting them on Chief Delphi as soon as they're completely decided on. So you'll know as soon as its official.

The Ultimate Protection Squad is ecstatic to be able to join Team 1732, the Hilltoppers, and show Michigan what Milwaukee has to offer. Plus, we don't get to see our Michigan friends nearly enough, so thanks for letting us come and play with the big boys =)

I have been told there will not be mentor matches this year. There's not enough time to do them and all the team matches too.

Rule changes should be coming out this week. I'm waiting on a few more opinions from those that I sent them to for review.

We are still doing a silent auction and I am asking every team to supply at least one team t-shirt for the auction. If you would like to contribute other things to the auction that would be greatly appreciated. The shirts will be seperated into groups and be a part of the auction.

I put a thread on CD asking for teams that went to the Niles District to check their totes because a rookie team had a tote of theirs taken. This tote had most of their teams spare parts in it (including 2 new AMSuper-shifters). This team started right before Christmas break and to loose all those parts is very stressful. A mentor from another team e-mailed me and gave me a terrific suggestion: "Call out to all the teams that are attending MARC this year and see if they could contribute some spare items for this team" I think this would be great and something that we could collect not only for that team but for incoming rookies. If this is something that your team is willing to particpate in, then please bring spare parts and I will collect and distribute.

Thank you for considering doing this. I am sure these teams will greatly appreciate anything that we can give them.

The silent auction is always fun - last year, 1732 donated a robot-themed movie basket. Hopefully we can top that!

Thought I would have some fun with Marc just like I did with IRI (sorry if your team isn't listed I probably don't know them very well).

Alliance Captain 1st Pick 2nd Pick 3rd Pick
1 67 469 308 2137
2 33 3098 862 3357
3 3322 51 910 503
4 2337 1023 2851 240
5 1718 1918 830 3641
6 123 48 2834 1243
7 494 70 1732 1504
8 68 245 3539 2832

First seed sees our state champions back together. Second seed has the other 4 ball auto with 3098's key shooting and 33 fender shooting. 3rd we see 2 strong key shooters with a 3rd wide. 4 gives us another 2 key shooters. 5 sees a CMP dueo back together. 6 gives our first out of stater (sorry don't know them too well). 7 gives us the 70 and 494 finally together. Truck town (dark horse of Newton) and 245 (state finalists) taking a risk on a long bot in 3539 with a ton of upside if they can triple. Just some fun to see just how scary these alliances could end up!

I did the same thing in the IRI thread, I don't like judging my own team so its just easier to keep us off the list. We'll see how our new drive team does, coach has had 2 matches this year, brand new driver, our starting manipulator (he's a sophomore), and a hp that has plenty of matches under his belt. I'm sure they'll do well enough to make elims!

My team competed against 48 at the Queen City Regional this year. They are a very effective robot that has an excellent 6pt auton/teleop shooter. I did not see them go up the bridge during eliminations. This could have been their strategy because of such an effective shooter. They won both the Pittsburg and Wisconsin Regionals and were finalist at Queen City. I don't think they will go un-recognized for long at MARC. I perdict they will be a top 5 alliance captain (before picking begins).

They are one of the better robots I seen this year (and I've seen alot of robots this year). I don't know if they are breaking in a new drives team like so many other teams are doing but they are a solid team from top to bottom and a force to be reckoned with.

I'd have to agree with you, I would put them in the top 5 bots I've seen live, if not higher. They've done very well. I wouldn't be suprised if they were allience captain 1 or 2, but I won't bet on it, FRC has a way of suprising you. :P

All teams are allowed to have up to an additional 5 pounds on their robot. Typical off-season events don't have inspections or weight scales to know what teams have done in the off-season. So this of course is on an honesty basis.

However because I hosed my team with my really bad weight calculations this past year (20 lbs overweight), my team has purchased a floor scale. If a robots weight comes into question, then I reserve the right to have you put your robot on my beautiful new scale.

So...who's getting excited for MARC? :)

I'd like to ask Michigan folks to supply the wide/long/square/etc. info for the team list below. Probably wouldn't take long, just like the IRI list.

For the record, Team 48's bot is long (34.5" frame) with pneumatic stinger and ability to overhang. To see how much it can overhang, watch this 80's soundtrack cheese-fest - http://youtu.be/Z1wugVzdhG0?t=4m11s. We have not tripled in competition but are very much looking Forward to doing so! We feel we can either be the triple train's "engine" or "caboose" in part of a double-stinger attempt.

Fixed.

Also, as I'm unfamiliar with the term (sue me), what is a "jump drive" where 308 is concerned? Is it some kind of nonadrive/octanum/freaky thing?

I watched some of their matches and they seemed to operate essentially as a standard skid long bot.

Clinton Bolinger

308 can toggle between traction and mecanums.

They are technically a long bot, but it doesn't mean you can turn them side ways and push them up the bridge.

Fixed.

Also, as I'm unfamiliar with the term (sue me), what is a "jump drive" where 308 is concerned? Is it some kind of nonadrive/octanum/freaky thing?

I watched some of their matches and they seemed to operate essentially as a standard skid long bot.

Yes, a jump drive is an octocanum.

OK now if you're bored, feel free to provide bridge balance assist information, if you wish to share. I'm only looking for systems that can be used while your bot is ON the bridge, not while off the bridge helping others to balance.

I plan on visiting pits for this, but early info is good info. Thanks!

Please use the following classifications:

STINGER OUT - Stinger of any kind applied outside of frame perimeter
STINGER IN - Stinger of any kind applied inside frame perimeter
BRAKES - Braking/stay put system - mechanical brakes, pneumatic pad onto bridge surface, etc.
PID BRAKES - Deserves its own category if no other mechanical braking present, as control stops once match ends.
OVERHANG(+) - Can hang at least 12" of robot off the bridge. Use OVERHANG+ if you have additional features to secure the bot that don't fall into any other category - wood blocks, wedges, tilting arm to affect COG :-), etc.

2337 also added pneumatically powered brakes (inspired by 1718) for the IGVC offseason event two weeks ago (used successfully for single, double/co-op, and a triple balance).

Added info for 217 and 2337. Presumably 2337 overhangs 12" if tripling, so I added that as well.

You can add stinger out for 1718 (along with brakes).

1675 - stinger out, overhang.

This is a different and much simpler stinger than what we had at the regional level, but its also somewhat untested as its been built away from our shop (uses the same gearbox as previous stinger and has a shorter moment arm, so theoretically it SHOULD work BETTER than before....)

Stinger/arm out.
If one partner has stinger, we like to be the first one up for triple balance and rotate our arm all the way down to under the bridge once the arm has gone over the edge. That way, there is no possibility of the bridge not balancing.

I didn't put that in, because I wasn't 100% sure of our overhang. Looking at CAD, without bumpers (wheel axle to frame perimeter), we have ~14.9 in. So, yep, we do get the Overhang badge.

For clarification, our "Stinger In" is simply a 'dingus' - 148-style - a large pneumatic cylinder.

51 has a Stinger(in).

The stinger was in before St. Louis, but we had to take it off because we couldn't make weight. It went back on at IGVC. We still need to track down two pieces that are missing in order to make it complete.

Inside. Just barely.

1918 stinger out. It was first used in troy. we only use it in the case of a triple so we keep it taped in the stowed position, during qualification rounds. Our first triple with 85 and 910 was with no stinger and done in less than 15 seconds from the time we decided we needed three rather than two. Of course that was NOT with the rookie drive team that will be at MARC

Looking forward to seeing all of our friends at MARC!

Kind of late, but 68 has something like brakes. When we are on low gear on the bridge our robot will not/can not move without significant force applied to it.

One of the field reset volunteers thought we were stuck before we switched it to high gear.

2604 is the other robot

2604,70,494,107,815,830,910,2137,2834,2851,3357,35 38 are wide
217,123,191,862,1504,3302,3539 are long

1504 is long in frame, but not in wheelbase, so we can easily hang off either end--and we believe we could even go to the middle because we can turn sideways (Mecanum wheels).
