Ok, now that 2 Regionals have played out, what do the players have to say about the importance of robot speed? Do tell.

Depends on your strategy, in my opinion.
If you're trying to collect every ball on the field (you have a huge basket), then yes, speed is very important. But if you are trying to control the ramp and bar instead, then not really. Power is more important.

Everything would have work out fine if only we have a gear box for the drive train.... or do we? ;-)

I watched the KSC on the webcast and was very impressed by both the speed and power (two speed gear ratio?) of the Baxter Bomb Squad (#16) robot. It definitely played a significant part in their success (particularly the defensive moves it put on the competition).

I would definitely say that speed had it's place at the GLR...our machine was one of the quicker ones there, and the announcer's favorite line quickly became, 'and the Mystery Machine shoots across the field...' But without being able to control that speed, as well as having good maneuverability, speed is nothing...
