It is the first Saturday after January 1st, not always on the 5th.

IIRC, sometimes it's been moved when January 1 is a Friday. I'd have to go back and look at old calendars to show that, though.

It is the first Saturday after January 1st, not always on the 5th.

It's not consistent. The 2004 kickoff was on Jan 10 (the first Saturday after January 3rd) while the 2009 kickoff was on Jan 3. It's never been on the 1st or 2nd (going back to at least 2002).

I believe it's the first Saturday after January 2nd? In 2010 it was the 9th, but 2009 it was the 3rd. I think the basic reason is the hangover holiday.
