Hello Everyone!

The Ruckus Planning Committee is pleased to announce that the 2012 Rah Cha Cha Ruckus will be held on Saturday, October 27th from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. This year, we are proud to announce that we have expanded to the 25,000 square foot Dome Arena (http://www.fairandexpocenter.org/pictures/dome_layout.gif)in Henrietta! The new venue is bigger, provides more seating, has many hotels and food options nearby and is easily accessible from the NYS Thruway! Team registration is now open, and we hope that your team can come! Ruckus is a great time to train new members of the team before the new season starts and offers a fun atmosphere with less of the stress of a regional competition! The registration fee is $100 (which is way cheaper than many other off-season events), and as always, 2013 pre-rookies can compete for free (the committee will make sure you have a robot to compete with if you would like).

We are really excited to grow our event, and look forward to bringing you an even better Ruckus! We are planning lots of exciting activities including the annual "Pie-in-the-Eye." Moving into a bigger and better venue will allow us to expand our event and provide a better experience for everyone! Event schedule, rule changes, volunteer registration and some fun events are still being worked on, but we will be sure to keep everyone updated!

The event website can be found at www.ruckus.penfieldrobotics.com
The event Facebook page can be found at http://www.facebook.com/rahchacharuckus ("Like" the page for the updates and information!)

We hope to see you there!

I'll throw in a bit of a shameless plug for Ruckus. The Rah Cha Cha Ruckus is an absolutely fantastic event. It may not be a major off-season competition like IRI or MARC, but it's always a fantastically competitive event, and it always a lot of fun. It's a one day event, and the environment is extremely relaxed. It really is as much of a Robotics Halloween Party as a competition.

In the past, Ruckus has drawn the attention of a lot of high-profile teams. It usually contains the local power teams, like 1126, 191, 229, 1559, 1507 and many others. However, in the past years, we've also seen attendance from major out-of-state teams like 188, 610 and 48. By attending, you'll be going to compete against some very strong teams who you can learn a lot from!

It's an amazing opportunity, all for $100, and though the venue in the past has been a little tight, now that it's moving to The Dome Arena, it's going to be able to accommodate an off-season on the rise! I'm extremely excited for The Rah Cha Cha Ruckus!

2791 will be there. We're technically not "out of state" but we haven't been up in the Rochester area since our rookie year. See you there!

Two questions

1.) Since its a bigger venue will more teams be attending?

2.) Does anyone have the match footage from last year? I never could find it.

Im looking forward to this and its still months away :)
Here is a video of the dome for teams who are curious of how big it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovoDgKpR-Aw

If all of the regulars show up, this may be one of the most intense Ruckuses yet.

1) We are hoping that expanding into the dome will draw in some more teams and make Ruckus even more exciting! We are also working on some really cool things that the larger venue will allow, whereas we did not have the space in Webster.

2) I don't know. Sorry.

3)The dome video is awesome! There is also a link in the original post that brings you to the floor plan. The video linked to (to those that don't know) is of the Rochester Rampage, an event where many local teams can show off their robots at the Monroe County Fair on a full field.

Methinks that remains to be seen.

Depending on number of teams registering, I hope they remove the restriction of not picking within the top four seeds.

Last year, the top 4 teams could not pick within the top 4 teams, so as to try and balance out the top teams so the matches would no be a complete blowout.

Just a little bit of data on the 8 teams already registered:

The 8 teams so far have a combined record of 232 wins, 107 losses, and 3 ties. They also have a combined 6 regional wins and 6 regional finalists. This is going to be an incredible event.

Is it bad that when I read this, my first thought was "Nick, is 1503 coming to Ruckus!?!" Yeah... I realized my folly :o Unless you really know if 1503 is coming to Ruckus.

Do you think we could get an "Eh-Team" at Ruckus - 1503, 188 and 610?

Considering 1503 didn't apply for IRI, I would be suprised to see that they don't register for Ruckus. I know that Spartillery isn't done and would love to improve on her finalist appearance at Waterloo earlier this year.

As for the possibility of an Eh-Team happening, well this is Ruckus, where strange things happen...

As are 48/610, 1507/188, 1507/610, 48/1507, 48/188 (partners last year at Ruckus), 48/3193, 1507/340, and any number of other combinations from teams who've applied and have yet to apply (I think 3193 from NEOFRAland is going to register, but not yet sure).

Regardless of alliance combos, it will be a fun, competitive time for all. I'm lookinG forwarD to it. :)

I know 610 can triple with their arm like stabilizer.

Does anyone else have something to triple balance with?

340 has a stinger, 1507 has drive brakes. That's all I know.

If 48 has a stinger, I'm not aware of it. But Travis could answer that better. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if they add one for IRI and carried that over to Ruckus. Purely speculation, however.

My favorite cheesy video ever. We've had a stinger since Queen City but have not had the opportunity to use it in competition. The vid starting around 4:10 does show the stinger's capability, however. We can hang almost half the robot off the bridge - center wheel close to the lip. Would prefer not to get that close!

Also is alliance selections going to be the same as last year Ed?

This is something the Ruckus committee is still looking at for 2012. Last year was our first look at the "top 4" restriction and changing/revising/removing that is certainly something we're looking at. As many of you long-time attenders know, we've done different things in the past with respect to alliance selection due to the smaller venue size (relative to a regional) with the goal of making the event both competitive and fun. We'll do our best again this year!

Someone asked about capacity -- we have a tentative floor plan with space for 32 teams, but this is not a hard cap and it incorporates a healthy amount of "elbow" room in isles, robot traffic lanes, etc. If there is an influx of registrations (hint?? :)) this can be adjusted and we can easily accommodate more teams!

I'd like to encourage all teams who plan to attend to register sooner rather than later. This generates more hype for the event and ultimately leads to a more epic experience for all involved! No payment is due now, so if you know you'll be coming there's nothing holding you back -- get your team leader to register! :)

I'm astounded by how much 48/3193's machine can hang off the bridge. It looks like it's just barely hanging on for dear life, but it balances. So 1507, 340 and 610 have balancing aids, as does 48, and, if they attend, 3193.

Its still not official that we won't go, but the team is going though some major changes this off season and as much as the mentors were determined to go the beginning of this season, once you get to the time everyone falls back into their usual place once the dust of competition settles.

This would be huge. As an event that historically has only had enough teams to support 7 alliances (about 21 teams, least year as an exception), it would be great to have 21 teams 3 months before the event!

Hopefully even more teams sign up this year and we don't need a team to duplicate themselves to hit 24! *coughcough3402coughcough* :)

Hey Ruckusians, 1551 has a small dilemma. (That is to say, we're cheap and are hoping for a solution that allows us to continue being so...)

Our bridge met a brutal and final end during Buckeye. There was fire in the pits... As such, we have no official FIRST bridge, and because FIRST will be changing to a new system for this coming year, we are disinclined to purchase a new one of the same sub-standard model.

Does anyone have an extra bridge that 1551 could borrow for Ruckus purposes? (Or, alternatively, will any old bridge do without causing problems with the FMS?)

Thanks,

Patrick

Patrick,
If you have one of the older "black square" radios from 2009/2010 you can use that. Consider this an official "ok" for Ruckus :)

If not, 1511 will have your back - just remind one of us as it gets closer.

With a larger venue, we will be able to comfortably hold more than our standard 24. Right now, I think we have space laid out for 32 teams.

Do we expect to have 10x10' pits? This would be a great chance for all teams to experiment with pit improvements before regionals.

One of the guiding goals of Ruckus is providing a safe and comfortable event while retaining exciting and fun competition. Our intent is to provide normal size 10x10 pits with that in mind. We cannot promise this for certain quite yet but it is certainly one of our high priority goals.
Also for those who have attended in recent years and found seating tight you will be happy to know the new venue will comfortably seat approximately 1400 people the way we have it currently configured.

Ahh, but does RIT have a 40-student dormitory for FIRST alumni?
(that we get so many applicants to we actually have to turn people away...)
And work with three FIRST programs (FLL, FTC, FRC, plus additional competitive robotics programs in other countries)?
And give tons of scholarships?

Steve, I'm glad to hear you're considering both schools!

RIT has some amazing programs, clubs/organizations, and overall opportunities.

Don't let either of our opinions sway you either way. Choose the school that you like best, even if it's neither of them. Take tours of all of them, do research online, ask current students what their opinions are(yes, I know I'm contradicting myself there... but we both obviously love our schools so it's ok), and definitely make sure to talk to the departments that house your anticipated major. Talk to the advisor(s) if you can and get a feel for how that college/major will help you in your future career goals, and in your life as a whole.

And on top of all else, stay involved with what you love! Obviously I'm talking about FIRST, but it applies to everything else in life as well.

I am marginally opposed to no co-op bridge. I am very much against applying any form of IRI qualifying triple balance rules out of principle, but if most everyone makes the elimination rounds, any resultant blar randomly doled out due to the rule would be mitigated.

If I had a say, I'd want to see stock Rebound Rumble. Many robots are tired and plenty of drive teams are going to be new and/or rusty. I really don't look forward to random combinations of that reality attempting to triple in quals. Six year olds playing soccer comes to mind, as does the "agony of defeat" ski jumper (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfSLB-43laE&feature=related).

Also, as many of the students we would be bringing would be brand new, I'd like to show them a game with the original FRC-intent elements in place, and that includes the coopertition element. You can be certain it will be a part of future FRC games - get them used to the concept now.

I havent watched all the IRI footage yet im saving that for the drive for when im going on vacation.

Did 48 use their stinger at IRI Travis?

Didn't need to in the match we tripled with 469 and 4334. Barely had to overhang. Didn't/couldn't attempt any triples in other matches.

I like what I see.

Also, I would say that the top four seeds can't pick each other is a good rule to continue for a small event, and 1-8-1-8 alliance selections work in that scenario. But maybe all of those rules PLUS IRI rules might be too much.

One last question, when is the last day to sign up for Ruckus? I'm gonna make one more plee to 174 and giving them a final day might help planning and their decision.

Replying to a few different things here -

The current rule changes are posted here: http://ruckus.penfieldrobotics.com/ruckus-information/competition-rules/

There are a few more things being discussed (alliance selection included) but we do not plan on changing the game significantly.

Garrick sums up the rules situation quite well. To reiterate, major changes outside alliance pairings and tournament play format are pretty much finalized.

Comments on the alliance selection process are being read and of course being considered. As those who have come in the past to Ruckus know, we strive above all to make this an event that is fun for all attending teams (while still balancing that with the competitive nature of the game!).
One of the committee members will be sure to post here (as well as sending email to registered team contacts) once we finalize alliance selection (please note too that it is a distinct possibility that this will just be "no change" to the process from the FIRST rules).

The situation this year is quite a bit different than years past considering the growth in the number of teams that will be competing.

One last question, when is the last day to sign up for Ruckus? I'm gonna make one more plee to 174 and giving them a final day might help planning and their decision.

Registration for teams does not typically close until about a week or two before the event. However, we're carefully watching registrations to make sure we don't outgrow the venue or have to resort to uncomfortable squishing of team pits. So for teams out there considering coming please do consider registering sooner rather than later :)

Note that payment is not due/expected until the actual day of the event so please do not let that alone delay your team.

Please note: Volunteer registration will likely close much earlier than the timeline given above for team registration - if you want to volunteer please register as soon as you can!! We appreciate the assistance of all our volunteers!

Will there be wifi at the dome? I wanted to tryout some different scouting techniques for our team.

I don't have a certain answer for this at this time, however I would not plan on having this available. We'd love to be able to provide this, but we may not have the resources to do so.

Teams setting up their own access points will not be allowed; pit operation of robots will be "tether" only as traditional at FIRST events. This is quite simply to preserve the reliability of field operation.

I would love mentor matches.

Me too! :) We hope to have more to share on extra events "soon", including possibly mentor matches, pie in the eye, etc. and also our charity drive. Stay tuned!

The mentors are gonna have another talk about ruckus in our next meeting, which is the 20th.

I still don't know if I'm going to be needed as a team mentor or if I could be a volunteer. If the event happens to need an extra hand somewhere the day of and I'm with the team, just let me know and where you need me.

A) Right now we have space laid out for 32 teams. We may be able to squeeze a few more in. Honestly, I don't think we anticipated having 30 teams already signed up in August.

B)Hopefully! A lot of great teams, a new, bigger venue, and some other things in the works! It will definitely be a great time!

My concern now is how will this influence the number of matches each team plays.

We're now slightly larger than the Waterloo regional (which had 30 teams). Waterloo played 44 matches on Day 1, which I believe was about 9 matches a team. Not bad. Except Waterloo played qualification matches on Day 1 from 9:30 to 4:44 PM. Take out the hour and a half for lunch, So that's about 5.5 hours of qualification matches. And, Waterloo, being a two day event, didn't play eliminations until Day 2. Being a one day event, Ruckus runs qualification matches and elimination matches the same day.

Going off of last year's schedule, qualification matches are played for about 4 hours (8:30 - 11:30, 1 - 2). If 4 hours of Waterloo gameplay, about 30 matches were played. Between 6-7 matches per team. Given that we're already larger than Waterloo, and are still potentially growing, we're probably looking at 6.

I, personally, think this is a bit low. But, I really just put this up to give people a speculative guesstimate. Truth be told, I'll gladly take a shorter match schedule for the now expanded team list :) I love all the great teams coming to Ruckus!

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS ALL SPECULATION. IN NO WAY DOES THIS GUARANTEE WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT RUCKUS. THIS IS JUST SOMETHING I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT AND WANTED TO LOOK AT.

Here is the answer to your question and concern: Ruckus is a one day off-season event, that is the least expensive of these events and a (typically speaking) local event for most all teams. The purpose is to have some fun with last year's game, train the new recruits to your team and win a few awards with a smaller field than was in FLR, earning you some recognition for your robot and team you otherwise might not have gotten. It's a time for teams to meet and mingle and talk about their design of last year's robot, as well as build little friendships that continue on at FLR. Winners are obviously going to be happy, either award winners or ruckus winners, but guaranteed that everyone will go home happy because NOTHING was truly on the line, other than fame that will last a few weeks and your own experiences which will last for a long time.

If even all teams get is 6 matches - fine by me. Great opportunity for difficult and gutsy scouting practice. Plus it's pretty obvious that no alliance is going to miss out on a great team, as generally speaking, all the teams signed up are pretty competitive.

My hope is 32 teams is a cut off, and every alliance picks their backup, therefore no team is left behind, and the last alliance picked gets an award a-la the NHL all star game draft.

Plus, we are talking about teams that we've been looking over for the past handful of months - No one is going to not pick team 0000 just because team 0000 went 3-3-0 in RCCR, even though they went 6-3-0 in FLR and would go 6-3-0 in RCCR if given enough matches.

It's not going to be a problem.

I, personally, am not worried about the number of matches. If it were a purely local event, anyways. What I'm worried about is those traveling quite a distance for the event. This year, we have a large number of out-of-state teams traveling to our humble event. If a team is traveling such a distance, I'd want them to get their money's worth (even if the money is less than most other offseason events), and make the travel worth while.

Six matches in one morning is a pretty reasonable number for a single day off season. I'd always be in favor of anything that gets us more matches, but six isn't the end of the world.

Because these teams came from a pretty good distance it is also important to leave them a reasonable getaway time. They do not want to be here til 9pm after a long day of roboting. That are very tired and grumpy by then abd could be prone to not ever coming back.

Typically, each team gets around 7 matches. Typically, we have not had 24 teams compete. Rebound Rumble allows for faster turnaround times, but we also have a larger number of teams. The committee will keep in mind the concerns mentioned, and we will do our best to create the most enjoyable experience we can! It will still be a great Ruckus, and I am very excited!

This is true, in our case. We expect a late arrival home, but we have our limits.

I don't find a smaller number of matches to be a huge deal, such that I'd still prefer to see some form of mentor round instead of using the time for more matches.

That are very tired and grumpy by then abd could be prone to not ever coming back.

Hey all,

If there are other thoughts regarding # of matches we'd love to hear them. One of the big comments we've received in the past is that more matches means tighter match-to-match plays (team X has to play again in Y minutes and we don't have the time to check-out/fix the robot/catch our breath). With the increased number of teams this will be less of an issue.

But yeah we'd love to hear thoughts on # matches (or, time dedicated to match play) versus things like:

- Extra "fun" events like mentor matches
- Time the day starts/ends (we won't change this for this year since it is already published, but curious for years to come)
- Match-to-match time (how "rushed" things need to be, maybe gauging versus your experience on a qualification day at a regional - do you want it to move at that pace? faster? slower?)

As always we can't of course incorporate all suggestions but I'm interested in what you think!

Ruckus has always been about not just the matches, but all the fun crazy stuff that happens along with it.

If we manage to get 6 matches each, then that would be plenty. I would be disappointed to see things like mentor tournaments, Pie In The Eye and other Ruckus shenanigans go to the wayside in interest of more matches.

That's just me though.

Second what Nick said...more matches are not as important as the overall experience.

Last year was my first Ruckus, and I had so much fun with 48, I'm bringing another team to join in the festivities! Besides, I still need that chance to smash a pie in Travis's face! :D

Mr. Lim

- Extra "fun" events like mentor matches

Ruckus is very much a "dress-rehearsal" for our new student leadership. We may be more of the exception, as opposed to the norm, but last year our team was very focused on performing well at Ruckus. We were preparing to break an 11 year drought where we went without a win at any kind of event. The fun events weren't on our radar very much, but this year will likely be different. Rumour has it there is a mentor or two that might be interested in piloting the EdgeWalker...

- Time the day starts/ends (we won't change this for this year since it is already published, but curious for years to come)

We are arriving Friday night, and so the early start is great for us. The end time is a factor since we drive home the same night. I don't think we could push it too much later than it is - we also factor in time for a meal on the way home.

- Match-to-match time (how "rushed" things need to be, maybe gauging versus your experience on a qualification day at a regional - do you want it to move at that pace? faster? slower?)

I think it'd be great to run the field as fast as it will go, and let the chips fall where they please. I don't think there is a need to artificially try and slow down the competition to spread out matches. If I needed to miss one match to fix the robot at an off-season event, I wouldn't panic too much. Especially if there were more matches to be played as a result of the quicker pace.

There are no further rule changes to the game other than what has been posted on the website, and the Alliance Selection process will be the same as the standard FIRST procedure (24 teams will play in the eliminations rounds).

We will have real-time scoring, but penalties will be added after the match has ended. To keep a faster turn-around time, penalties will not be discussed after the match.

For our fun events, Punkin’ Chunkin will return, and we are still hoping to keep Mentor Matches! As usual, you will also have the opportunity to pie you favorite FIRSTer in the face during the annual “Pie-in-the-Eye.” During the event, we are also holding a Mega Drive (specifics to come later)!

I've got a suggestion to raise additional funding for Pie in the Eye.

If a recipient of the pie-ing is willing (I am), I was wondering if the Ruckus staff could give people two parallel pathways to pie retribution against that person:

1. The usual way - sell tickets to be put in a bucket. One is drawn randomly and that person gets to pie the recipient.

2. The IRI way - have a silent auction which gives people full control over whether they win a chance to pie or not - lay out a bidding sheet where people openly bid for the right to pie someone.

Both pies could be applied to the recipient simultaneously to avoid spending much extra time per pie recipient.

I wish I could come but there is school and all that, plus I don't think my parents want me driving 8 hours to Rochester, and I certainly don't want to pay for gas for that. Will there be a webcast?

Hey everyone, this is just a reminder that T-Shirt pre-orders close today! If you haven't done so, and your team wants extra shirts, pre-order them! We will, as usual, have some shirts for sale on the day of the event.

In addition, the fun events for this year along with details about the MEGA-Drive this year have been posted on the Ruckus Website (http://ruckus.penfieldrobotics.com/ruckus-information/charity-drive/)

There are also a few more cool things the Committee is hoping to bring to make this year the best yet! We hope you are all getting excited!

Hey, Is there any number on qualification matches this year? I was wondering considering the larger number of teams.
I believe this was discussed earlier in the thread, but it is looking like 6 matches per team. This isn't an absolute, but it is the number we projected if we want to keep the fun events part of Ruckus and still finish at a reasonable time (there is a lot to cram into a 1-day event).

Unfortunately, due to budget issues and student participation issues, 3193 has withdrawn from the Ruckus. We hope to compete next season when our finances are better, but we just can't do it this season.

I will still be attending with Team 48, and I hope to bring along a few Falco Tech rookie students so they can get their first taste of a great FIRST competition experience.

The winning alliance was 340, 48 and 378. Ruckus finalists after 2 very close, hard fought and intense matches were 610, 1559 (once again united at Ruckus) and 2168. The elimination matches were great!

Even though we weren't picked for an alliance, that wasn't our goal. We use Ruckus as a way to let everyone who can't drive the robot at competition get a chance to see a fields eye view. The most common comment I hear is

"Wow, I had no idea driving is that hard!"

As such, I would have to say, for us, Ruckus was a huge success. We got to field test a lot of new things (new pit, new scouting system) and introduce rookies to a competition. This is why I love Ruckus. I had a very fun time and the organization was amazing.

I just wanted to especially thank Dante for making the right call in that seminfinal match. For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, there was a match in which an alliance achieved a triple balance. Then, inexplicably, all robots lost communications and the foghorn was sounded. Dante made the right call in choosing to reset the match: That is what the rules say to do.

I was very disappointed when I heard the crowd boo the decision. Not only was it the correct one but booing a decision is never GP, even if you disagree with it.

Overall, the event was organized as well (maybe even better) than an official FIRST one. I loved the way that alliance selection was done efficiently, though I think it would be inappropriate for FIRST to do it this way. Here at Ruckus, it sped up the process but in a real event, I like the formal aspect of collecting all the top 8 on the field.

Great Job everyone yesterday! Everyone did an amazing job, and congrats to 340, 48 and 378, that was amazing yesterday. I also like to thank 3003 and 3015 who we competed with in the elmination matches, we acomplished something so amazing yeseterday. It was crazy that we balenced 3 robots twice.
Congrats to team 340 again for the charity drive, that was awesome!
It was fun seeing everyone, and dancing with lots of others. Hope to see everyone next year!

Ruckus 2012 was one of the best events I've ever been to. The event ran pretty smoothly, the venue was awesome and the volunteers were great as usual. I had a blast just being there, let alone all the great things that happened on our team.

This event was the debut of our new operator and drive coach. Both of these fine gentlemen were extremely nervous leading up to this event, but also had their sights set on excellence. Our drive team grew a ton this weekend, driving like seasoned veterans. It was really awesome to watch them fly around the field, scoring baskets like nobodies business. I look forward to seeing what they can do this coming season.

It has been five years since I've been to a Ra Cha Cha Ruckus, and almost four since I've been to the Finger Lakes Regional. It was really nice to see all the Rochester FIRST people that I don't normally see at championships this weekend.

I want to thank Justin Foss, Joshua Miller and the rest of team 2168 for the great run we had yesterday afternoon. Your team is an absolute class act, who always never seems to be satisfied with themselves, even when they're one of the best robots at the event. Finally getting to see the Fat Swan fly, especially during her "swan song" was one heck of a thrill. That thing belongs in a museum. (Maybe a museum for Colson wheels?)

I also want to thank team 1559 for being a pretty awesome alliance partner. Once we got our match strategy figured out and everyone was comfortable, you guys did a good job playing a little defense and feeding us and the Falcons basketballs. Sorry we couldn't triple with you guys, but it was fun to run with you again.

Lastly, I want to thank the volunteers and event planning committee for putting on such a great event. I hope Ruckus stays in the venue it's in now - it's easy to get to and is close to lots of lodging for us out-of-town folks.

On a personal note, this was my second event with 610. In that short time period it's been really cool to watch this team continue to develop into a strong, competitive, and driven team. Thanks guys, for making this fun.

-Nick

I would like to thank all of the volunteers for the best Ruckus yet. This competition felt as close to an actual FIRST competition as possible. It doesn't hurt that most of the backbone operations were run by some of the best people in FIRST. This just reminds me how lucky we are to have you at FLR every year.

I would like to thank 48 for picking us and 378 for joining our alliance in elims. I too would like to extend my gratitude to 3003, 3015 and 3044 for they way they handled the field issues. For the most part everyone was gracious and professional.

I would like to thank 610, 2168, and 1559 for being such good competitors in the finals. Your presence gave the event a feeling that we are that much closer to a Regional Competition. The same can be said for all of the out-of-town teams. Thank you for attending.

Finally, thank you to 1511 and the rest of the Ruckus Planning committee. It was a great event. The trophies looked great, the pits were great, the volunteers were professional. Nice job.

I'm with Grim Tuesday on success -- we blew the minds of a couple of prospective drivers, had some very interesting technical problems (that we made rookie pit-workers tackle), experienced one match where our robot ran amok not under our control, won a trophy we didn't deserve, and got a PTC Platinum grant that we did!

Thanks to everyone, particularly the Ruckus Committee, 1511, 1126, and all the volunteers!

This is my 2nd year involved with FIRST as a mentor. My first ever event was last years Ruckus. Actually, it was the first time I was around any FRC robot. Our team had a great time both years. Of course, this year will be remembered for a long time as it's the first time in many years that we've been in any finals. We want to thank 340 and 48 for selecting us as their 3rd alliance partner. You both are awesome teams. It felt like a regional with all the great teams in attendance. It was very exciting and the triple balances were awesome!!

Our driver was "almost" a rookie driver and he drove every match. We only have a handful of active students this time of year and 11-12 total. He was a backup last year, but didn't drive in any of the competitions and only a couple practice rounds. He's a wrestler and came away from the semi's and finals stating it's more exhausting then a wrestling match!! I think his heart rate was through the roof. The entire drive team handled the pressure great while the rest of the team paced the sidelines:)

I want to thank everyone involved!! I spoke with couple of planning committee members and the amount of work to organize the Ruckus is incredible and takes many months. What a great event and the location was spectacular. My wife did volunteer for the first time as well and had a great experience. I think she will do it again for the regional.

See everyone 2/28/13 at the Finger Lakes Regional!!

A big thank you to all volunteers, staff, and teams responsible for making this year's Ruckus such a fun and rousing success. The organization and execution of the competition were top-notch as always. The venue was well-suited to host this event - hopefully it can continue to be available in future years. And even with all the tired robots and fresh faces on drive teams, the teams and robots were as competitive as you can find in a fall offseason event.

Having graduated 15 seniors last year, Team 48 brought a new drive team and numerous rookie students to the Ruckus. I think they all received a good taste of the fun and excitement a typical FRC event can deliver.

I'm very proud of our drive team for improving steadily throughout the competition and not letting a few nagging robot and comms issues in qualifying deter them from their goal. Thanks much to our friends on 340 and 378 (Go Delphi!) for being excellent alliance partners. The elimination rounds were competitive all around. I especially thought the 610, 2168, 1559 #1 alliance would be a tough nut to crack, and I was right...but we found a way!

What an excellent capstone to a productive 2012 season, and a great launching pad into 2013. Thanks again to all who made the event a fun success!

On behalf of team 174, thank you to all of the volunteers and teams that made this event possible. This was our first year at Ruckus, and I can say it won't be our last. A very fun event that clued us into what needs to be worked on and how to improve for the coming year. Thank you to you Rochestarians for making us feel welcome and part of your community.

We would like to thank our alliance partners 2228 and 3181 for being amazing in the elimination matches and great people to work with. Can't wait to play with you again at FLR and may you have a great season ahead.

Our main drive team was actually at home, doing the ACTs, but the students we had as backups played an amazing game and I look forward to seeing them progress.

Congrats to everyone involved. You put on a heck of a show.

Next stop - Finger Lakes Regional!

I've got a lot to say, but before my post becomes tl;dr, I have to ask - is there any video of the event? In my dreams, someone would have every match. 2791 did a lot of cool things on the field and I'd love to relive some of them.

Anyhow, this was a fantastic event! It was quite well run and we got to play with a variety of teams we don't get to see that often. It was great to see old friends on 2168, 229, and 610 again - it's really unfortunate we didn't get to play with any of you in eliminations. Apparently, you can go from 27th seed to the eighth captain in two excellent matches. I did not know that.

And because I did not know that, we didn't have a very good list prepared. This put my head scout and I under a lot of pressure, especially because I forgot my Simbot-inspired whiteboard for this event. We watched all of our dream picks slip away... 340, 3683, 3044... So we had to make a quick decision. We figured that the #1 alliance would probably not risk winning by triple balance in the quarters, so we took a gamble on a wide robot and picked 145. There were some other choices available, but we had a good match with them. Our data highly emphasized teams that hit the ground running early in quals rather than sleepers that got it together at the end.

Our second pick was nerve wracking, as our head scout was now on the field and had no way of talking to anyone else on the team. In this circumstance, he managed to make an extremely useful pick that gave our alliance a fighting chance - 1334. What you have to understand about picking from the 8th seed is that you need to take risky picks. 1334 was not a pillar of consistency, but they were a long 6wd with a stinger, a potential four ball autonomous, and a great bridge manipulator. They were inconsistent, but powerful. The gamble we needed.

Strategy with these picks was quite interesting. 1334 had some great data on the #1 alliance's third pick that we used to guess what they'd be doing, and we came together with a strategy to try and force a rubber match. Unfortunately, we needed every piece of the puzzle to work on the field to force a win, and it just wasn't in the cards. It was still a great match and I enjoyed working with all of the members of the alliance. If anyone wants me to really dig into the details of the strategy, I'd happily talk about it, but it's too boring for most people. :P

We had a great event overall. We came in executing our defensive elimination oriented strategy from the get go and we did it with a level of consistency and quality that we've never done before. Basically nothing on the robot broke, our driver got better and better, and we continued to crawl up the rankings until the very last match. This was easily one of our best events and our favorite off season performance. I'm very proud of everyone on 2791.

As always, photo credit is appreciated if you want to repost them anywhere.

And if teams are looking for additional photos, feel free to contact me. I had close to 2000 photos, so you can see more than 1600 didnt "make the cut". I definitely had some issues with the lighting at the event (mainly I hate using flash if I don't have to, so I avoided it where possible), but I think we got a decent set for the day :)

I definitely had a blast at Ruckus - always great seeing so many old friends, and seeing so many new kids. The event has grown so much from its start back in 2005, and this was definitely an awesome show!

Most likely! Eric is tackling quite a schedule this year - he is likely going to MC 5 events (applied for FLR as one of them). If he goes... I go, so we are hoping the stars align :)

As for the hours of work... this batch was a bit better than some... It only took ~5 hours (my typical has been close to 10, but I think I'm getting more efficient, and maybe taking fewer photos & doing less editing as I understand the shots I want & settings I need). Funny thing was I was so incredibly frustrated when I finished, thinking I had soo many crappy shots and was angry with the lighting, but when I looked at my uploaded pics the next morning, I was pretty happy with the set that "passed"... and realized that my frustration was with the 1600... but I still have a long way to go in learning if I am not willing to spend crazy amounts of money on super high end cameras & lenses!

Haha thanks!! I'm fairly certain that is the one I got covered myself for (and only a tiny drop on the camera thank goodness!!). I was relieved when I saw the final shot - it was totally worth getting the backlash of whipped cream!
