I went to the sme site today http://www.first-sme.org, and was reregistering. The choices for this years card are interesting. I think everyone should go sign up and vote.

Yep, my vote went to card 5! :) I liked a few of them... wasn't liking card 12 - it reminded me of clowns!

I voted for #5 too, that one was wicked sweet!!!!
I voted for 5 and 8 myself.
I'm torn.
How come they all have holes except #5?

I was torn between 5, 1, and 10...but my vote ended up going to 5. I can see how 12 can remind someone of clowns and number 8, well, I thought the whole hand thing was kinda weird, kinda reminded me of aliens. But, anywho, that's where my vote went.

I voted for number 9... It has gears, bolts, everything! :D

Can someone please tell me what's exactly in number 4~?
I really think it looks like some sort of milling machine, or some robotic arm... But I can't be so sure.
Becuase, if I guessed right, I will choose number 4 over any other design!

Thanks for fixing my link David. I copied what was on my old card instead of what was on my screen.I was torn between 1, 5, and 8 but I ended up voting for 5. Ken, I don't know what that is on card 4 so I can't help ya. Sorry.

I tried the fixed link, and it didn't work. I tried the first link (the one from the 2001 card) and it worked fine. I'm a bit puzzled, but it worked anyways. The "fixed" link was at the top of the screen, but it did not work when entered.
Anyways, I was a bit torn. I liked most of them, but I voted for #5. It appears to be the odds-on front runner, at least among the CD crowd.

Actually, http://www.first-sme.org redirects to http://www.sme.org/first-sme/index.html, it's just that when Carolyn typed it in a comma got into url (probably because the script though it was part of the URL when it automatically put the {url} tags in).
As for why the "fixed" link didn't work, the site has been pretty slow for me and it probably just did come up for you the first time you tried it.
I voted for #4......not sure what it IS
I like the student name BIG

Me too. That's why I voted for #8. (The name on that one is even bigger.)

Hmmm.... my best guess would be the arm of a drill press... maybe...? I honestly have no idea!! That's the best that I can do. If anyone figures it out, let me know ;)

The Old SME looked professional, and could be used as one those places when they say to present "two forms of ID." These are a little kiddish, but there still alright. I voted for #5 because it is the one that was least busy, and more pleasing to the eye. Anyways for #4 I think it one of those big welders you see at Car Manufacturing line, but hey I can't say for certain.

Hmm... okay... please excuse me, but... I don't know what this is all about? What is SME? What do they have to do with FIRST? I'm very confused.

Ahhhhhh,
I'm torn between 4 different cards.
While I like #5 cause of the apparent space theme, I also like the image on card# 8 with the hand connected to the circuit board. But #'s 3 & 9 do have the most clear image of a robot-man's face on it so I just don't know what to do!!! Decisions, Decisions, Decisions!!!
Ken,
I think the image on card #4 is an assembly line robot like the ones used at automobile manufacturing plants. That's my best guess!

SME is the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. They have formed a partnership with FIRST over the past few years, and have designed the FIRST-SME card as a way to provide FIRST participants with a special membership in SME. The information provided during signup also helps FIRST to gather the information they need to write grant proposals, etc. to get the funding they need.

I hope that the information used to get the card is used for something because I don't know of anyone that was rejected to participate in anything FIRST related because they didn't have a card. I was under the impression that the cards were used as membership badges to get into team parties and other FIRST related functions but I guess not!

The original plan for 2001 was to require the cards for entrance to the team parties, however, due to issues with getting the cards shipped out in time(SME actually goes through another company to have the cards produced,) this plan was scrapped for 2001. Don't be surprised if it is a requirement for this year, however, so I'd recommend registering for yours now before the rush.

I liked number 4 cuz' it wasn't too flashy and it wasn't too spaced-out like #5 was. #5 was cool too, but it was a little too "Futursitic" for me...

Another bonus is scholarships. If you fill out a scholarship survey you can get more info about which to apply for and it looks good on the forms. Just another bonus of FIRST stuff.
The object in the background is the arm of a robot much like GM uses on their assemblylines. By the way, I voted for 10, because I happen to like its color scheme in relation to my team shirts, and I like the top to bottom writing format, because it's easy to read when worn. I really don't particularly care, because I do like card 5 too, and it sounds like that's what we'll get.
