IIRC, CalGames and MadTown Throwdown were webcasted last year. Has anyone else attempted to webcast an offseason event? Successes? Difficulties? Has anyone managed to stream 720p?

We set up a last minute webcast of Ozark Mountain Brawl. I can get you in contact with our "webcast dude" if you like. He is very knowledgable.

Connor, Eugene Fang setup both MadTown's and CalGames webcast and they were pretty well done. A few camera man issues. But I believe Eugene has written up how to do a webcast, its actually not to bad. Just need 2-3 dedicated people on it so you can archive the matches as well.
I don't know if anyone has tried 720P, but that would be fairly awesome!

I co-own a webcasting business that streams in full HD.

Take a look at http://www.firstwiki.net/index.php/2012_Webcasting_%26_Archiving
720p is totally doable with today's internet capabilities. The problem, however, is the video capture device. Getting a good piece of hardware that supports HD to interface your computer with the video feed isn't cheap.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.
