View Full Version : FRC Card Deck

I'm considering creating a custom, FRC-themed deck of cards. Each card will feature on its face the robot of a 2012 World Champion, World Division Winner, World Chairman's Award Winner, Michigan/MAR Champion, Michigan/MAR Chairman's Award Winners, and various other selected robots, including some Regional Winners and Regional Chairman's Award Winners.

The price should be about $4.75 per deck plus shipping (considerably less if more people order). I can only move ahead if at least 500 decks are ordered.

Who is interested?

I could go for that. Though, the problem arises in there being 4 sets of each card, but 3 robots per alliance...

If you're selling them (especially in those quantities), you'll probably want to either avoid using FIRST's trademarks, or to run this by FIRST for permission. I think the conversation might go more smoothly if you explain whether this is for profit or not.

Also, this reminds me of another famous deck of cards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Most-wanted_Iraqi_playing_cards).

Reminds me of these Team 45 playing cards from (way back) in 2004:

http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28079&highlight=playing+cards

Don't know if they were handing them out all year, but we got a few packs in Atlanta and decided to have some fun getting signatures.

Good luck with your project!

I would probably buy more then one pack as a way to remeber the senior year in a fun way. I would make each suit a divison.
King-Winning Captain
Queen- Winning First pick
Jack- Winning second pick
10- Finalist Captain
9- Finalist first pick
8- Finalist second pick
7- Higher seed semifinalist captain
6- Higher seed semifinalist first pick
5- Higher seed semifinalist second pick
4- Lower seed semifinalist captain
3- Lower seed semifinalist first pick
2- Lower seed semifinalist second pick
Ace- The scientist the division is named after (Newton/Curie...)

That's where the Chairman's Award teams come in. For example, I was going to make the Aces the three World Champions and the World Chairman's Award Winner. The Kings, Queens, and Jacks would be the three Division Champions; the fourth card of each suit and three of the Tens cards would be the Michigan and MAR Champions, in no particular order. If you're selling them (especially in those quantities), you'll probably want to either avoid using FIRST's trademarks, or to run this by FIRST for permission. I think the conversation might go more smoothly if you explain whether this is for profit or not.

Or the Dave Lavery joker:D . It isn't too helpful since most card games exclude jokers, but when you do use it, the people around you will start thinking that the card must be a game hint and quit the game to try to figure out what it means.

I have one of those (and I do use them). Might not be the "real" ones though... they were bought in a clear plastic case at convenience store back in the day (I was a kid, it was a present for an A on a test).

edit- I think they are authentic...

---

I'd probably buy a deck...

Here is my suggestion for the face cards:

Aces are the last 4 chairmans winners, with spades being the most recent, 1114.

10's could be the previous 4 after...

Otherwise:

Spades: Winning division (K is captain, Q 1st pic, J 2nd pick)
Hearts: Finalist division
Clubs and diamonds: Other two divisions

The other cards could be interesting... maybe past WWFAs or WEIs could be snuck in somehow.

I personally wouldn't include MSCs in there, as This isn't a "FRC in michigan" deck.

Oh, and the jokers (assuming a 2 joker deck) would be Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers :D

And the box? Perhaps "Dozer" ... :D

Ummmm....

Isn't it ovious Aces High (176) has to be an Ace in the deck on principle.

51 Robots have won the championship...

8 Teams have 2 or more championships...

6 Winning robots each were sponsered by UTC & GM (UTC: 173, 176, 177x2, 296, 180 / GM: 65, 66, 67x3, 1114 / Beatty Machine Tool is next at 4...)

You're pretty close right there to having a way to set up a deck by winners and major sponsers.

Found this link CARD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf22CvcPNy4) (Collegiate Aerial Robotics Display!) I didn't attend the Championships, and wished I did! I will plan to go next year as a spectator or as a participant!:D. I would have liked to see this!

My 2 cents for what its worth:
Girls of FIRST playing cards featuring the girls on teams! (not what your thinking...) Mentors of FIRST working from King- Dean Kamen, Joker- Dave Lavery and others. Contact Logo Loc (FIRST Store) (http://first.epromo.com/page.i?cmd=first) they may want to offer a deck of cards with FIRST logos on them and your ideas on the other side!

I'd actually do it more chronologically.
Have each year be the winning teams of that year, going back with the years.
For example having the kings be the winners of this year, plus the chairmans winner. The queens that of last year, and so on. Once you get back to 2004 and the days with 2 robots per alliance, you can add remarkable robots, WFA winners, or even gamepieces.

I think that would bear more time resistance than a deck that's specific to this year.

Thank you for adding this. Marketing@usfirst.org is where you want to go to ask for permission. As long as you follow the branding standards FIRST lays out for you, (http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/marketing-tools/brand) you should be fine. The basic rules are, don't alter the logo, keep it unobstructed by other graphics, and don't make a profit off the logo.

EDIT: I checked with FIRST, I am allowed to use the logo on the back of the cards! Yay! I am also going to take someone's suggestion and use Kickstarter - unfortunately, it takes days for it to be set up. So...waiting...

Whoops, you did this already.

Additionally, you might want to ask the TEAMS you plan on featuring if it's okay to use their robots. And if you use anyone else's photos other than your own, ask for permission. It's not nice to take others' work. (This could be solved in one-shot by contacting the teams, asking for their permission and a photo of their choice to be used on the card.)

All of that aside, I'd totally buy a few. I think even FIRST's offices would think it's a cool thing to have! They'd make great giveaways.

Alright, so I've worked out some of the teams for the cards. I like the idea of going back in time a few years with the Chairman's award winners - they will be the four aces - but for the rest of the cards, I think that 2012 would be better, because if I featured several year's worth of robots, too many great robots would go unrecognized. Below is the table, but I can't seem to find a good list of the Einstein participants anywhere. I might have had a great seat in the finals, due to a mix-up with the awards (long story), but 12 teams is far too much to remember. Where can I find a list? I assume one is on CD somewhere.
http://www.lightningrobotics.com/Contents/images/cardtable.png
I need help with the rest! What teams out there have done extremely well? What teams have pulled off the impossible (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFiLn3HW2FE&feature=related)? I'm afraid I don't know that much about the exploits outside of Michigan - I need help.

p.s. 862 was my team, and 3322 will be; they get the Joker spots. That is, unless people feel their exploits were good enough to get them promoted...

Kickstarter should be up and running in a week or so.

The 2012 Einstein teams, in order of captain, first pick, and second pick, are:

Archimedes:
2056
1114
4334

Curie:
233
987
207

Galileo:
180
25

Newton:
548
118
2194

I hope this helps!

I can get you some of a list. I'm using the FIRST divisional results. I'll pull the winners and finalists from each division in case a winner is accounted for elsewhere. (At the event, the Finalist teams from each division are the backups for the winners. One chance to pull a randomly chosen one if you haven't already used the backup team card.)

2056, 1114, 4334, Archimedes (alias the Eh-Team). With 1114 already showing up due to the Chairman's, you could pull in the backups, any one of 2826, 67, 4143. (With the setup you have shown, I'd pull 2826 in as 67 is elsewhere already.)

233, 987, 207, Curie. Backups 341, 254, 78. World Finalists.

180, 25, 16, Galileo. Backups 231, 744, 1714. World Champions.

548, 118, 2194, Newton. Backups 68, 330, 639.

In other news: 326 has yet to win the Championship Chairman's Award. I think you're looking for 842. (Or 236. Or 365. My time memory is a bit fuzzy on the CCA.)

If you're doing a 2012 deck, 1717, 365 (if they're not already included by virtue of CCA), and 1551 (get a still of them sniping an incoming shot out of the air) should be included. I think there's another MAR team that did really well, but I can't remember who. I just remember it being a tossup between them and 365 (or was it 341?).

I think that the teams that set the world high score for rebound rumble should get mentioned here. In Curie semifinal 1-2, the alliance of 341, 254, and 78 scored 128 points. In that match 254 scored a ball in hybrid from their alliance bridge, the alliance put up a total of 37 hybrid points, and the alliance triple balanced. All three of these feats are impressive as well, and here is a link to a video of the match: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0Tb4dP2RmA

If you are looking for great robot teams, maybe look at FRCTop25? That might be a good place to start..
As far as great RCA teams, there was a CD thread with a spreadsheet on teams who have won it multiple times (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1155663&postcount=42) Perhaps look at people (insert number)-peated. For example, I am think FRC1311 has won RCA at peachtree the for past 3 years.

I would definitely be interested in buying a pack of these.
