View Full Version : 2012 IRI Scouting
Some discussion of different scouting elements for 2012 IRI have begun to appear in other threads. I thought it would be a good idea to merge these ideas together into one thread.
For starters, FRC Designs has now updated their website with a picture of every robot attending the 2012 IRI! You can view every robot and download the entire album!

STINGER OUT - Stinger of any kind applied outside of frame perimeter (i.e. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yEcfc-twnM&feature=player_detailpage#t=268s)
STINGER IN - Stinger of any kind applied inside frame perimeter (i.e. http://youtu.be/Ar6CMCwlW5k)
BRAKES - Braking/stay put system - mechanical brakes, pneumatic pad onto bridge surface, etc.
PID BRAKES - Deserves its own category if no other mechanical braking present, as control stops once match ends.
OVERHANG(+) - Can hang at least 12" of robot off the bridge. Use OVERHANG+ if you have additional features to secure the bot that don't fall into any other category - wood blocks, wedges, tilting arm to affect COG :-), etc.

We added a front appendage for IRI which allows us to pick up much easier and faster. So far it appears to have translated to much quicker scoring, that we are very happy about.

I have uploaded a photo of us (447) stacked triple balancing. Not demonstrated in the photo is the ability to overhang. No stinger or brakes, but we do also have auto-balance unfortunately there is not anyway to reference these attributes so I guess we are:

We never have officially measured our overhang at competition. On the practice field we have measured overhang in excess of 12 inches depending on the weight distribution of the two other robots we placed on the ramp. Here is a picture of our overhang at the Hartford, CT regional earlier this year.

Few things I wouldn't mind seeing on the list
-Drop down ingester
-Co-op bridge knockdown auto with time
-Co-op bridge ball collection with time
-Alliance bridge auton
548 as of now only has a drop down ingester from the list above.

1592, off that list, can go to the co-op in auto and collect balls in auto and has time to go shoot them.

68 currently has a Co-op bridge ball collection Auton.
I noticed it's not in your list but it might be worth adding whether or not a team can feed/get fed in auton. 68 can get fed 2 balls, and shoot them, and we can feed out our front intake rollers.

From Bjenks' list, 447 has both Co-Op Knockdown Auton w/Time & Alliance Bridge Auton...working to add a few more variations of these for IRI.

Team RUSH 27 has autons that knock down and occasionally retrieve the balls on the co-op bridge in attempts to score the balls. We do not have an auton to get the alliance bridge but one of our autons will shoot the 2 balls then head over there to be ready for when teleop starts. We also have a 99%ish auton to score 2 pointers. We can't guarantee it will work 100% of the time but it works VERY efficiently. In addition, we can make the 3 pt shot as well.

Here's a pick as WazooIII sits now.
Since 1538 will be present, will Cowscout be active at all?
We have brakes when in low gear.
The backstory: a volunteer once told me that our robot was stuck on the bridge after trying to help it off. It wasn't, but refused to move, as per every time it's on the bridge. That's just low gear, but it works about as well as brakes.

Here is a current picture of FRC team 3138's robot for IRI with modifications. The white lines on the side of the base are markers for overhang when balancing. We take up approximately 24" of the bridge.

Since 1538 will be present, will Cowscout be active at all?
Unfortunately not, CowScout relies pretty heavily on having access to competition data. Since IRI doesn't regularly update match results and rankings in a place where our scrapers can access, CowScout won't quite work right for IRI. However, robot photos as well as regular season results for all the teams attending is available.

To prepare for its first trip to IRI, 3193 Falco Tech has added a few modifications to our robot Talon Charlie:
Added a second motor to our arm base tilt for strength, durability, and redundancy
Pneumatic system is bug-free, so our drive shifters and bypass hood on our shooter for full-court passing are fully functional
Improved maneuverability
Improved grip on ball collector
New pneumatic "overhang assist" system to improve/stabilize our triple bridge balancing--only takes up about 18" on the end of the bridge (including bumper)
Please stop by in the pits to check them out--I know our students are eager to see your robots as well!

45's bugs have been solved mechanically and it will appear that we will be bringing an entirely modified bot to IRI.
New Shooter
New Drivetrain
Bump-crosser
Consistent 2 ball auton
Stinger(maybe if I can work on it Sunday)
Special thanks too Cybertooth team 3940 for the use of their fling-a-pult design. They have been so gracious by helping 4 other teams with shooters this year. I believe all 5 teams incorporating their shooter will be at IRI this year. It would be interesting to see an alliance of all fling-a-pults :)

If you are including 217 as one of the Fling-a-pult design, this is no longer the case. They switched to a Hooded Wheeled Shooter at MARC.

Welcome to the fling-a-pult club.
1023 has added a locked set of wheels between our driving wheels to help with the triple balance. We seem to be best of the front of a triple, but can do other spots as well. We are wide and can now hang our front wheels off the bridge. We do have a stinger to help the balance. We have multiple hybrid modes with our most reliable being to shoot 2 in the top basket and then drop the coop bridge. We can also shoot reliably 1 from the side (sometimes 2) and knock our own bridge down. We are looking forward to seeing you all soon at our first IRI event! :)

I noticed 2481 is missing from the balancing spec list. They are wide (from pictures). Unsure on rest.
Looks like the other 69 teams attending have data complete though.

They are wide and had no stinger. They did triple with us at QC. You can see their overhang.

I'll leave this right here, it's triple balance practice:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt_G-3sOgUw&feature=g-all-u
It's not the best balance we did, but it's the only one caught on tape (and it's not half bad either).
As a side note, our brakes are the same as 68's in that we have a super low gear that is nearly impossible to move. At the beginning of the video, our 2007 chassis (2 CIM's and 2 minibike motors) is trying to push our robot (and the limp 2010 bot) up the ramp, but can't manage it until I nudged the robot forward.

2614's stinger is in, I saw it at CORI at the end of June.

Check out photos of both our stinger (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/38069) and a triple balance with 2 L, 1 W (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/38070?).
