View Full Version : Dodge Dart
So, who's seen the commercial for the new Dodge Dart?

Pretty exceptional marketing, and a neat take on the engineering process!

Count me in! One of the coolest car commercials I have seen.
And this is coming from a hard-core GM guy.
"Never too much power"

Change 'car' to 'robot', 'coffee' to 'mountain dew' and Tom Brady to will.I.am, and you have next year's kickoff intro.
I love it. :) My wife hates it. Go figure. ;)
Love and hate are passionate emotions. Generally a good sign. Note hate and hate is not...
Can't wait to take one for a spin.

I don't watch commercials on tv. I watched this one for you. Interesting.
But it's too bad they picked that name for this car, the real Dart has quite a different heritage.
(I've been keeping my wife's 70 Dart Swinger running for the past 31 years)

A work buddy has a '63 Dart that he has souped up quite a bit (it's what folks do here in SE MI!). "Quite a different heritage" is putting it mildly! It was his first car, so he overlooks the "butt ugly" comments... ;)

That is just awesome.
Anyone up for making one about robots?
I hope Dodge spent more than 6 weeks on this new Dart.
I laughed at this so hard when I saw it for the first time (during the MLB ASG), then watched it again during many of the next commercial breaks, and still laughed.
Great job.
More coffee, sleep... That's enough sleep.
That is just awesome.
Anyone up for making one about robots?
I totally would if I could lol!

My family hasn't bought something from Chrysler that hasn't been a lemon, but the whole Fiat ownership has brought in really good ideas and good ways to market their cars.

Start with a simple idea (spin wrench in hands)
Think (team gathered around)
Think more (students at a white board)
Drink Dew (slam a bottle of mountain dew on a table)
Stop thinking, start doing (students and mentor working on Inventor)
Hatch a design (build something in cardboard)
Kill the design (set on fire, students running in the background, mentor takes it out with a fire extinguisher)
More Dew (slam a 2-litter bottle of mountain dew on a table with some cups)
Design something totally original (old footage of 71's Zone Zeal robot hoarding the goals)
Ok, not that original, this original (zoom back that footage, new footage of 148's Tumbleweed)
Now it's time to make something (team working on a chassis)
Do it again (new chassis)
And again (new chassis)
That's good (perfect chassis)
Kick out the trouble makers (turn away from a huge group of kids fooling around)
Call in the Mentors (A bunch of old guys and women ready to work look determined)
Call in the Parents (A few mothers show plates of cookies with a team theme to them)
Call in the Nerds (A student looking over some math problems)
Not those nerds (Bunch of Warcraft and card game playing kids)
Those nerds (Long shot of students on a team with tools in hand ready to work)
Blow off lunch (Pizza getting cold)
Blow off sawdust (student finished cutting something blows some sawdust off the band saw)
Finish your homework (students around with an important local political figure shaking hands, showing off robot.)
Sleep (Student uses an Uber Tube as a pillow)
That's enough sleep (student gets up)
More Dew (slam some 6-packs of mountain dew on the table)
Build a prototype (image of a CAD drawing spins around)
Build it (robot ready to go)
Drive it (Robot runs)
Break it (falls over)
Start over (student kicks fallen over robot)
Build another prototype (better image of a CAD drawing)
Build it (robot ready to go)
Drive it (Robot runs)
Love it (robot scores)
Thats good (team cheers)
Bring in the Sponsors (business men and women come in)
Why? Because they share experience (talking with students)
And sharing experience leads to this (student has an interview with one of them, and the interviewer shakes the student's hand and says "you're hired")
Ok, one week left (team exhausted)
More Dew (a bunch of 24 packs on the table, and a student shakes an empty box)
Give it a kick (robot drives around)
More CIM Motors (attach a CIM motor)
More CIM Motors (attach another CIM motor)
Never too many CIM Motors (Robot speeds around a set up of cones)
Give it 40 psi (Student shows a typical cylinder)
No, give it 80 (mentor shows a cylinder three times the size)
Give it the ability to control with a wiimote and kinect (human player waving around in front of a kinect like crazy)
Give it a Robot Cart (a small push robot cart)
No, Bigger (a larger robot cart)
More lights (the cart not flashes with LED lights)
Good
Give it an autonomous mode that sees the targets. (have the robot running autonomously.)
Uh Oh, the code team (a group of students with their laptops look up, disgusted)
You can't do that (Code student is dismissive)
Give them more Dew (Code Team hard at work with lots of mountain dew at their disposal)
Take it to the Scrimmage (robots playing in a scrimmage)
Tweak

Decals (Attach some sponsor logos on)
Take it to the Regionals (shot of a regonal)
Maintain 1st seed (drive team cheers after a win)
Select the 3rd seed (team captains shake hands)
Win some awards (team high-fives the judges)
Apply to high ranking colleges (student sends some mail)
Accepted (holding acceptance letter high in the air)
Study (hitting the books)
4.0 (report card)
Graduate (throwing hats in the air)
Get a Job (that handshake with the interviewer comes back)
You are the future. (student surrounded by paparazzi)

Nope, you're not clueless at all; the Dart name was ended in 1976 (with international production going on a little longer). The name is being revived for the 2013 model year. If you look at the end of the video, it also says "Dodge Dart II" to differentiate. This might save you a couple clicks, too. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Dart)
Also, great commercial. Love it, and I hope we see that FIRST version sometime soon

I have a friend in the market for a new car who is stuck between this and the Focus partially because he can't decide if this commercial or Alan Mulally is more worth backing. :p
Honestly Chrysler (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi0SbrrGaiw) seems (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFAiqxm1FDA) to (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKL254Y_jtc) be the new VW (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R55e-uHQna0) these days.

The old Challenger and the 'Cuda would beg to differ.
If you look at the end of the video, it also says "Dodge Dart II" to differentiate.
The // is also the logo for Dodge, so that was the the way I took it, considering they haven't marketed the car as the Dart II from what I know.

I think the only option here is he who wields the voice of god. I'm sure we could present our plans (and Tetraman's fantastic script) to Mr. Freeman and ask him to help us out.

I'm trying to forget the Mustang, haha.. So that's where we are going ???
I'm always preaching to these kids that they don't truly realize the value of what is sitting right in front of them regarding FIRST and a hundred other things !!!!
Okay so getting back on point.. I was in high school and bought an old car for $ 400. Except for the tires it was all original equipment, hardly driven. White exterior. Black interior. Black ragtop. Less than 10 years old. Long story made short,,,, I kinda wasted the car.
It was a really nice 1964 1/2 Mustang. 260 engine, generator. A Mustang historian will tell you it was one of the first 38,000 Mustangs ever made. If I had that car to day the way I received it I'd send it to Barrett-Jackson.
Proof that I had to learn things the hard way... Just sayin !!

This commercial is pretty true to life.
The Dart is the first car which is the product of our reformed Chrysler/Fiat combined company. The timing on this project required us to change most of the rules of how we develop vehicles: better, faster, leaner, etc.
It was like an 18 month FRC build season.
Lots of work, lots of fun, lots of caffine :)
Great results, Great car!
Already working on the next one.

Jim, It seems that with all the buzz about the DART on the forums that Chrysler/FIAT may have an opportunity to get some input on what the next generation of buyers may like to see in the next vehicle :-)
I know that I've thought about the Dart as a next car opportunity... Great work with this one, from a loyal Dodge Driver!

One of the students in 1998 had a thing for the Dodge Dart.
Spent many an evening trying to keep that thing running.
Hope they fixed that horn issue where you leave the car in the sun and the horn blares till the contacts burn leaving you to come back finding the car on fire.

0:42 reminds me of Top Gear (UK). They have capsized about 10 reliant robins by now (and they dropped a piano on another).
Flaming Monkeys of Boone County are in Belvidere, IL, where the Dart is being made.
We REALLY need Chrysler/Fiat to step up and sponsor them.
Any thoughts on how we could leverage our interest in their marketing to get them to help out their home-town team?

I'm pretty sure at one point I read an article where one of them explained that it actually took quite a lot of effort to get the cars to roll. At any rate, Robin tipping in the UK (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1305308/Top-Gears-Jeremy-Clarkson-blamed-Reliant-Robin-tipping-prank.html) has become akin to cow tipping here in the States.

That commercial is pretty darn sweet.
Dodge has a lot of work to do to get rid of the era of the Caliber (one of the worst cars of the last 20 years)
New Dart looks great, and has a lot of cool toys though. Wish it actually had some stones. Maybe the SRT4 will make it worthwhile.
Just saw the add in IMAX when watching batman. So much more awesome in a theater :)

2013 Dodge Dart Limited 1.4 Liter Multi-Air Turbo, Manual Transmission, of course.
Not the Rallye that I craved, but an off the lot (more discount), that was optioned out.
I hope it's not a rash mistake, purchasing a car so early in it's life cycle, but I believe that the marriage between Chrysler and Fiat will yield true world cars that are stylish and entertaining.

Amusing that the new 2.4L turbocharged engine puts out more power (184hp) than any engine available in the original Dart of 4.5L and under (180hp). Of course the old big-block V8s out-muscle the newer engines considerably.
Interesting that the older Darts weigh about 200lb less than the newer Dart, likely due to the abundance of options and safety features in the new one.
