[FF]: 2013 Season Long Fantasy FIRST

With the passing of IRI it is time to start a new season of Fantasy FIRST. Sign up is til Thanksgiving weekend.

Due ti the success of Fantasy FIRST teams, we will be doing it once again. From one to four players. You can come up with a team name or claim your own team name to affiliate with yourself (I am going with the X-Cats even though I will be the only X-Cat participating). Please list if you are a lone representative or are affiliated with another participant.
Also please make sure you have the time to devote to 60+ drafts within a one month period while I'm not going to require 60+ lists because I don't even know what weeks the regionals are on but what I will do is if you miss five drafts in a row (that means if you don't make one pick or have sent me a list) you will receive a PM from me. If I don't receive a timely response (24 hours) you are booted from the league!

That's not a typo, it's tradition. 12/31, most people are going to be celebrating the end of the year that evening. So instead of drafting that night, we draft the next day.

Draft running: I'm available as a backup on districts, unless the draft happens on Tuesday night or Wednesday night. I don't think I can make the time to run a non-district event without moving the time up an hour or more.

However, I will maintain the team list and the waiver list--I'm trying to think how I'd pull an opt-out into the waivers for people that don't think they want to use that part of the game. (Probably it would just be a "let me know that you won't normally make a claim, and I'll bypass you when running through--but once you make a claim, you're in" system.)

So I just want to get clarification on being involved in drafts.

Garrick and I are both college students. I work and mentor a team. Garrick... Well, I don't know what Garrick does these days. I know he plays Quidditch. So that's something.

My point is, free time between us is going to be strapped tight. I remember reading we're allowed to send in lists ahead of the draft. That's still a thing, right? Is there a maximum to the number of times we're allowed to do this? Since time between us is going to be so limited, it would be extremely convenient to be able to make lists when we have time and submit them in the event neither of us can make the draft. I just want to make sure there's no limit to the number of times we can do this.

Also, I remember reading that we can just tell the draft runner to just give us teams from the random list. If we do this often, are we considered as neglecting our drafting duties? I'm prepared to take on the above plan if there is no limit to it, but I'm sure there will be times where even that will fall through. If we ask to be given random teams often, are we up for being kicked from the league?

Lists: Send 'em in, send 'em in, send 'em in. If you don't know who's running a draft, send them to Ed, myself, and any known draft runners. There is no maximum number of lists you can send in. (Well... I suppose we could say that the maximum is 3x the number of drafts... one list per pick, in other words. Anybody actually doing that has way too much time on their hands, though.)

Telling the draft runner you want random teams: If you tell the runner that you want random teams, it counts as being present. However, I would be wary of doing it more than three times in a row as it's easy for us to think that you're slacking. Incidentally, after draft runners finish a list, any remaining picks for the team who sent the list are automatically random teams.

This started a couple years back and has seen some heavy use. Short version, if a team becomes available after a draft for any reason (adding to the event, "owning" group dropping out, being dropped in favor of another team from the pool), they go to waivers. In most cases, there's a little bit of post-draft leeway, running to midnight the night of the draft; exception is the selecting team dropping out. Highest on the list to make a valid claim gets them and goes to the bottom of the list.

A valid claim has the team(s) being claimed, the event and tier they're being claimed at, and what team(s) would be dropped in the event of the claim being awarded. If multiple teams are claimed, the order you'd like them awarded (and/or dropped) in should also be included. I do issue reminders if you forget anything.

One thing that would help out a lot later is if people can help score the events. I'll put out a spreadsheet before Week 1 that has all the scoring built in--download, fill in for your favorite event, and get it back to me somehow. I'll input the information and tabulate the scores, post, and we'll be on our way to the next week.


Oh, one thing I forgot about drafts: It's OK to miss one or two here and there. We understand, you're busy. That's why 5 misses in a row is the criteria to get a warning PM (sent to the whole team) and missing the draft after that results in the boot. Be warned, though: With most days being 2 drafts, that's only 3 days most of the time. (We'll cut some slack on the 5th/6th if they're the same day--but the next day, show up to at least one draft for at least one pick, or you'll find all of your teams on the waiver list!)

I'll post it, along with some other items...

For each draft where (# teams in attendance)< 3x(# FF League teams), FF teams are split into tiers as evenly as possible. Who is in Tier 1, Tier 2, etc. varies by draft--it's random. Each tier drafts the same set of teams, and there is no "top" tier. For any event where the above inequality is not true, there is only one tier, with all participating FF players.


Now, an item of "business"...

I will be unable to run scoring this year. I can track who has what team, and help with attendance tracking, and run the waiver system--but I don't have the time to score the events, and I don't have time to run drafts.

This means that if somebody wants to step up and handle the scoring, now's your chance to say so. It's not particularly easy, but somebody's got to do it. There are two parts, event scoring (assigning scores to the teams at an event) and team scoring (making sure all the FF players get the points their teams earned). Speak up now, and I can offer some suggestions and advice (the best advice being don't do it all yourself--trust me!).

How do you play fantasy first

If you've ever played fantasy football, you will have some idea of how to play Fantasy FIRST (FF).

But, if you haven't, it's not that hard of a concept to pick up. For whatever event the FF league is playing in, pick 3 teams. Each team earns points based on standings, awards, wins, etc. Each player in the league gets the number of points his teams do. If you don't pick a team, a random team may be assigned--could be a surprise good one, could be a team that doesn't win a match.

Season Long FF (this league) takes it to another level. For every event in the FIRST season, including districts, area championships, and regionals, each player or team picks 3 teams. (For the FIRST Championship Event, it's 4 teams/division.) Each team earns its player(s) or team(s) points. (See earlier discussion of "tiers".) Highest number of points wins bragging rights.

But... there's a catch. Miss 5 drafts in a row (loose translation, 3 draft days), and you are given a warning. Miss the next draft day and you're out of the league and any teams you've picked already can be picked up by other players. The drafts run from Thanksgiving to Kickoff, with 2 drafts on most days and only 2 off days.

FYI, we don't need to know ahead of the drafts anything except who is on the team. It's actually quite possible for all the members of the team to make a pick or a change in any given draft. Just be sure that however your team is organized, your picks and changes get in.

Reminder: This Friday the 23rd we will be holding our initial Fantasy FIRST drafts for the BAE Systems Granite State Regional and the Kettering University FIRST Robotics District Competition. Don't forget to send in your lists or plan accordingly to attend the drafts. Because we have to double up so often this year it is very easy to fall behind in the matter of a couple of days and to the newbies you cna ask any veterans of the draft I do not tolerate absenteeism. I WILL CUT YOU OFF WITHOUT A MOMENT OF HESITATION if you fail to show up. Even if you fall into the red and save yourself time and again if you are a chronic offender I will cut you off for the trouble. The best defense against catching my wrath is to send in a list or even just simply say "Ill take random".
The cut off for registration will be Thanksgiving but I will allow team rosters to fluxuate during the draft season. No more than four members per team.

Can someone explain how the draft works? I understand the ordering and stuff (I read all of the rules) but where do we need to go for the draft?!On the day of the draft the draft order will be randomly assigned to the league members (for the District Championships and the FIRST Championships draft order will be determined by seeding). At the same time a random order of the teams will be established so teams can be selected for absent draftees (for the District Championships and FIRST Championships the order is determined by OPR). Draft times for selection are assigned to the draftees. They have five minutes in the first round to make their selection. Two minutes in the second round to make their selection and one minute in the the third round to make their selection. If a list is submitted the draftee wil have their pick made for them by the moderator according to the list. If no pick is made then a team will be assigned to the draftee by the moderator. It is then up to the draftee to correct the pick in the thread if they do not want the team that has been assigned to them. Until then any team picked by other draftees previous to the correction will belong to those draftees.
After the draft up until practice day of the event teams are allowed to trade teams with other draftees. Only even trades are allowed (One for one. Two for two or whole alliances for whole alliance. No unbalanced trades are allowed and no trading for real world items (Mtn Dew. Girlfirends. Previous robots. Freshmen minions.). All final decisions are through the commissioner (me).

You'll probably want to use the FF Draft Assistant (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86162&highlight=ff+draft+assistant) if you're not certain of what you're doing yet.

Hands down, the best way to go if it's your first time. Randomizes everything and spits out the schedule, then tracks all the lists for you. As a veteran draft runner, life got a LOT easier when I started using it (and even the really old version of it!)

I can answer that one.

Teams 1-7 all have at least one player who has played before; 4 of those are the same team as last year. Awesome and Pure Michigan are returnees. I don't recognize any of the other players as having prior experience in Season Long, though they may have played in IRI.

So, 9 returning and 14 new teams--last year, we started with 13 teams and ended with 12.

I highly suggest using that. It's designed specifically for running FF drafts in the Season Long League. Setup time of a draft: 5 minutes. Runtime of the same draft: Ask the program. Biggest downside: CD's 47-second post clock. And once you put the lists in, you don't need to worry about them--the first available team is taken automatically.

Good idea to do that--I tend to do it partly because sometimes I'm speaking as EricH, draft leader, and sometimes I'm speaking as Falcon, FF participant. Sometimes even in the same post.

When sending someone your list, say your name. It helps for the draft runner to be able to know what FF team you are from.

When posting, it can't hurt any.

Before the draft started after I put it up, people sent me their lists. I used the lists I had and live picks to do the best we could. About half-way through the draft, Koko Ed sent me the lists he received. I used the lists I had for the rest of the draft.
For your first pick, I had not yet received your draft. However, I did use your list for your 2nd and 3rd picks. For reference, these were your 5th and 14th picks.
Now, I did make a few mistakes, but most of those have been corrected. (Thats what I get for drafting manually.) What you have to remember is that I signed up at the last minute.

Actually, you don't get a reschedule.

You get a redraft. Rejected on a technicality, resubmit under the proper name. ;):p :rolleyes:


Redraft rules specify that redrafts happen:
1) At the discretion of the commissioner and/or draft runner.
2) Only if your list wasn't used (or you were dropped inadvertently).

If your list was used, then point 2 does not apply. However, point 1 overrides if the commish (Ed) says it does.

Should a redraft occur, anybody with a list in may choose to resend it. However, redraft rules also specify that the redraft would be conducted using as much the same picks as possible, as soon as practical (in this case, 12/2 is the first open slot unless 3 drafts/day is an option).

Correct. Those teams are on waiver. Get your claims in to me via PM or in http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108841 by next Sunday night, 12/2, if you want those teams. Make sure you have the team you want, the tier, and the team you will be dropping, and put claims in order of priority.

To all draft runners (other than Ed):

The times posted are not when a slot closes, but when a slot officially opens. So if Falcon shows 7:55, Falcon can enter a pick starting at 7:55 or when the team ahead of them drafts, whichever comes first (but if they submit after the slot behind them opens up, they get whoever. Picks coming in before the slot time opens can be granted if the team is still available.

List picks can be dealt with in a group--list submitters are considered to have made their selection as soon as their slot opens either by time or by the player ahead of them selecting. Yes, this can lead to breaks for the draft runners--and yes that's a good thing.

Eh, just means someone gets an extra couple of minutes to pick partway through when you switch from close time to open time.

If you miss 5 drafts in a row, you're given a warning--but we can't send the warning until all drafts for the day have completed. The warning is sent after the 5th (and 6th, if there is a second draft that day) draft(s) have completed.

Teams Awesum, Max, Exploding Bacon, and Cybergus are getting their warnings tonight. No appearance tomorrow (in either Central Valley or Hub City) means that they will be booted after both drafts complete; if they do show up, the miss clock resets.

Yep, we do have a problem...

This is grounds for a redraft of one of the two Hatboro tiers under redraft condition #2, omitted active member.

HOWEVER, the affected team is still at 5 missed drafts without the Hatboro draft. Therefore...

My ruling (subject to approval from Ed when he sees this) is that IF Team Awesum is still active after tomorrow's drafts, a redraft for one of the two Hatboro tiers (likely Tier 2) will be declared for "As Soon As Practical", which will most likely be Sunday, 12/2, with Team Awesum being given a slot at random and no other changes to the draft order (and other parameters are outlined in the rules document). Should Team Awesum be given the boot before then, no redraft will take place, due to them no longer being active members.
