View Full Version : Map of 2012 Regionals
Since (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=107780) teams (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=107795) seem to be thinking about what regionals they would like to attend next year, I thought a map of all 2012 regionals might be useful in the decision making. (https://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?msid=211663021560776055615.0004bff0741ab76072dd 5&msa=0)(sorry FiM and MAR teams ). When the official 2013 regional list is released, I'll update the map.
If there are any mistakes, please let me know so I can fix them.

Thank you very much for making this! I think it will be helpful to my team when picking a second regional (we go to second one). It also gives a really good scope of FIRST. Rad!
Sweet, good idea.
And Dallas has 2 regionals: East Dallas, and West Dallas.

Both are there, just one is on top of the other  If you look at the sidebar, both should show up.

Ya, what a GREAT Idea to put this on Chief Delphi ;)
I know we will be using this when we are selecting regionals. :)
Thanks!
It's great to see where they all are. If regionals don't line up at different dates I'd use this to figure out where in the world to go.

Which gets to some advice ... don't use this map for directions. (Though WPI's pointer is probably close enough.) You may find the town, but it probably isn't where you want to be. Just try bringing a team on the B-Line trolley from downtown Boston to BU!
One of the things that strikes me when I see this map is the great big hole with Memphis in the center. looks like a great place for a new regional.

I think you missed the new "Northern Lights" Regional at the DECC in Duluth... I made sure to check the sidebar :)

I concur. Before seeing your statement, I zoomed in on Memphis, but I think Nashville might be a better spot initially, and then Memphis & Louisville in a year or so.
Of course, you could just as easily make an argument for Memphis first, followed by a Nashville, then Louisville approach.

I will add the new 2013 regionals when they are published by FIRST when registration starts.
Updated to include 2012 FiM and MAR district events, and the MSC and MAR Championship.
Added the new Northern Lights, Phoenix, Western Canada, and Pine Tree regionals, and the new Collage of New Jersey, Grand Blanc, and St. Joseph districts.
Moved MAR Championship to current location.
Removed Niles, Northville, and Rutgers districts.

The issue is venue. Before the Knoxville regional started the original plan was to do it in Memphis, but there is a complete lack of appropriate venues. The only place that is suited is FedEx Forum, but it's location (right on Beale street) is not exactly where you want to let a bunch of high school kids out on Friday and Saturday night.
Nashville has better venues but not the density of teams.
Seattle should be the same.
Actually, Seattle is just a single regional this year, and the Central Washington Regional has been added in Ellensburg, WA.

Lubbock, TX has a new regional this year as well.

A note for any teams that might travel from afar to Calgary for the new regional, take a look at not only how much further north it is than the other regionals, but also the higher elevation in Calgary. The weather permits ski hills near Calgary to routinely operate well into May and sometimes June.
Or, a Chinook (warm winds from the West) very well could roll in and the temperature could rise from 0C to above 20C or more (that's into the 70s in Fahrenheit), and melt as much as a foot of snow in a day.
You never really know. :D
This is awesome! Thank you so much for posting this, 2705 will definitely use this when we're trying to decide what regionals we want to go to

Or, with the glass half full, if you're a Memphis team it looks like there are 8 regionals within an 8 hour drive to choose from.
The closest regional to Huntsville (Smoky Mountain) is 3.5 hours, followed by Peachtree at 4 hours, but we have 14 regionals within a 12 hour drive.
Added Lubbock, Central Washington, Dallas, Seattle, Crossroads, Razorback, and Inland Empire Regionals.
Removed Dallas East & West, and Seattle East & West Regionals.
Are there any other event changes from 2012 to 2013 that I have missed?
Could an admin please change the name of this thread to "Map of Current FRC Events"

3528 is very excited about this addition. With St. Louis & Kansas City being the same weekend, and Oklahoma taking place Easter weekend, we are strongly considering this one for our second regional- just four hours away!
