For those of you looking for a good week 3 regional, here are some facts.
A lot of parity in the field.
No team has ever captained the winning alliance more than once. (2007 = 935; 2008 = 476; 2009 = 1806; 2010 = 2345; 2011 = 525; 2012 = 1986)
No team has ever been on the winning alliance more than twice.
A deep top end. In 2012...
5 teams went on to seed #1 at another regional event: 16, 935, 1986, 2996, 3528
9 Teams total were part of alliances that won a regional
1/4th of last years field (16/64 teams) attended champs.
Currently 4 states are represented
Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma
It is going to be a tough event like always! :-)
You forgot that if you didn't win the year before, you won last year, then you have a pretty good shot at being the winning alliance the next year :rolleyes:

3784, Bit by Bit 4-H Robotics, has never lost a regional. They share the record of 2 KC regional wins with 3 other teams (1806, 931 & 525). In 2013 they have a chance to be the first team in KC Regional history to win 3 in a row.

1730 has qualified for championships every year except for the two times they earned the WFFA at the KC Regional. :eek: Beware the curse of Woodie Flowers.
edit: 1710 is the only team to both win the WFFA at KC and qualify for champs that same year. (Chairman's and WFFA both in 2009).

It would be nice to have you and just like Alpha beta said you guys always are pushing the envelope when it comes to designs and whats possible.
I think this regional is a really deep regional every year. Its allways interesting to see what teams come up with from 1730's incredible active appendage to unique craftsmanship of 525 there is always a great team throughout with unique Ideas.
I'm excited for the new season and to see what new things the midwest region has to show.

No doubt you can. That would require your team winning a third WFFA in KC. And while 2 from the same team in KC was already unprecidented, 3 still wouldn't shock me as much as your mentors do for your team and the rest of the region.
Did you know...
3528 won a regional (Oklahoma 2012) as the #1 seed in only their second year as an FRC team. That is tied for the fastest any team attending the KC regional has achieved such a feat. 1730 also accomplished this at Boilermaker 2007.
1625 was close being the top pick of the #2 seed in their second season and going on to win the 2006 Wisconsin regional.
1775 was even closer being the top pick of the #1 seed in their second season, and going on to win the inaugural KC Regional in 2007. They were the #2 seed that year.
1810, 1997, 2996 and 3784 won their rookie seasons as late picks in the draft, or emergency replacements.

We will miss seeing all of our friends in Kansas City this year. Unfortunately the Kansas City date conflicts with our spring break so it did not work out for us this year. We really enjoyed being here the last few years.
We will be heading north to Duluth instead.

We will miss seeing all of our friends in Kansas City this year.
We will miss playing with 525, as well as several of our St. Louis area friends like 1094, 1208, and 1985. We will have to fight our way to champs in hopes of meeting up with you all again.
Did you know...
The #1 seeded alliance has won every year at the KC regional except for 2008. That year the #8 seed with 476, 1806, and 1802 pulled off the Cinderella story.
But before you think the #1 seed alliance always wins in a run-away...
Last year the #1 seed (1986, 16 & 3784) was pressed to a 3rd game in both the quarters and semis, escaping the final quarter final game by 1 point with a basket in the last 6 seconds (http://150.199.24.201/WMSDownloads/robo2012/finalmatch_009.asf).
And in 2010 the #1 alliance (2345, 525, & 931) needed a 3rd match in the finals to overcome (1625, 16, and 2410). 1625 played on Einstein that year. 16 was the #1 seed in Chicago and a division finalist at champs. 2410 went on to be the #1 seed at Oklahoma later that season.

I was just telling somebody about those finals yesterday! Overall, that year KC was a really tough regional, and the finals in particular were a great show.

While we are at our 54 team open registration capacity, this tournament can easily go to 64 teams. Anybody out there on the wait-list?

PS. Going to Champs is not the best indicator of a successful team. There are a ton of great teams who build very successful robots, and send students to top end colleges every year who don't find their way to Champs. Looking forward to the day when a district system allows the teams who have been close for years to finally go.

Every year, the Kansas City regional surprises me with its depth and competitiveness. Usually we are a week one or two event. This year, with us having a couple of weeks to watch, learn, and think, it is going to be insane. I can't wait to see everyone there.

We have some reasoning behind this actually. Each year, when RaileRobotics plans its budget in August for the season ahead, we determine how many regionals and/or nationals we will be attending and we stick to this budget. Nationals is always contingent on dollars and the amount of time missed from school. Getting invitations year after year and/or qualifying year after year puts a tremendous strain on our sponsors to generate an extra $15,000 minimum to attend nationals. Team 935, over the last three years, has committed extra resources (money, time, summer hours) to many projects, including the development an emergency response team robot in which we are just now completing and our LEGO summer camp for children. As a general rule, we try to go to nationals (budget pending qualification) every other year, not back to back.
Although Nationals is a blast to go to, we've observed that investing our resources into long-term projects teaches our students more about FIRST's ideals than attending a five-day event.

My mistake. You are indeed correct. No team has ever won it more than twice.
The fact that the winning alliance changes up so often has become something that's kind id nice. GKC is definitely a regional that swings in any direction, and that's what makes out exciting. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing power houses sweep Canada and Michigan, but you almost always know who's going to win over there just buy seeing the roster. Kansas city? There's to many teams on a level playing field to tell.

Most years they don't update their page for the new feed until right before the event.
PS. You might be too busy driving at the St. Louis regional to watch, but each match is usually archived within minutes.

I don't think we won a WFFA in 2009... Not entirely sure though. All I know is 2008 and 2012. And yes the curse of the WFFA does exist and it sucks

Morenet (http://www.more.net/first-robotics) has a test file up to make sure you will be able to view the stream. It worked well for me with IE, but not with chrome (which matches their suggested set-up).

1986 Team Titanium (Hub City Regional, Ranked 1)
55 Teams are attending; One team is attending their second regional, 54 teams are competing for the first time.
Of that one team, one team (1986) has made it to Eliminations. One of those one teams made it to the finals of their regional, and won it all.
Congratulations to the following accomplishments:
Team Titanium, 1986, on their Regional Win at Hub City as the Number 1 Seed
Team Titanium, 1986, for going undefeated for 17 straight wins at Hub City.
Team Titanium, 1986, for their Entrepreneurship Award at Hub City.
Team Titanium, 1986, for their Quality Award at Hub City.
Jay Urban, of Team Titanium, 1986, for being a FIRST Dean's List Finalist at Hub City
As you may have gathered, Team Titanium had a successful first weekend at Hub City.
Their average qualification match score was 86 points, with a median of 84 points. They have a standard deviation of 19.6 points. The minimum score in their qualifications was 60 points. Their high score was 130 points. (To put it in perspective, the average score for Week 1 Friday Night was 41.4 points (median of 38 points), not including CVR or HH.)
Come Eliminations, Titanium definitely stepped up their game. Average Elimination match score for them is 107.5 points, median score of 114.5 points. Standard deviation of 25 points. Minimum score, again, was 60 points, with a high score of 138 points.
Note: The scores that Titanium posted at Hub City are WITHOUT utilizing their 30 point hanging ability and strictly sticking to their 10 point hanger. Will the competition at GKC be stiff enough that they have to break out their 30 point guarantee? They have one of the fastest, if not the fastest, 30 point climber in attendance. Edit Edit: They did, at a point, use their 20 point hanger.
Edit: For those who care about OPR and CCWM, they have an OPR of 64.6, ranking them 4th in the world, and a CCWM of 59.6, ranking them 4th in the world.
Only time will tell as to whether 1986 will be able to repeat their performance at Greater Kansas City, and join the club of teams that win GKC two years in a row. Last year, 3784 got them admission into the club, and it will be interesting to see who Titanium brings as their guest.

Last year Time-Warner Cable Metro Sports provided some very nice, "ESPN style" coverage of the GKC elimination rounds on a tape-delayed basis, and rebroadcast it on 2 or 3 other occasions. I have inquired with TWC as to when that broadcast will be this year. If anyone knows please post it here.

A comment for the general Kansas City-attending public: 1986 has qualified for the CMP at a previous event (as CalTran noted). Therefore, if 1986 is a regional champion at this event, the captain of the finalist alliance will qualify for the CMP. This may have interesting implications for alliance selections, but I'll leave you to figure those out.

The known is not quite as scary as the unknown. There are 54 teams coming to the KC regional who have yet to show their hand for Ultimate Ascent, and they are each occupying a great deal of our attention as we prepare.
There is a reason no team has been able to captain the winning alliance two years in a row. The field in KC is very deep, and the qualification scheduling algorithm can have a major impact with 55 teams attending. In the 5 times we have attended the KC regional we have been regional winners only once, and finalists... never.
We've completed the first step in trying to bring a wild card to KC, and if we find ourselves fortunate enough to captain or be invited to join a top alliance our scouts excel at finding excellent late draft pick robots to compliment the alliance. :cool: Looking forward to seeing everyone's awesome machines in a couple of days.

Minor correction: we did hang for 20 once in Lubbock. You are correct about no 30-pointers.
I'm with Aaron...this is a deep tournament, and it's going to be fun. We saw some interesting capabilities during the pre-bag "open house/week 0/whatever you want to call it" at LSHS; MOREnet's stream is going to be getting some traffic.
Practice day is tomorrow, so good luck to all the teams, stay safe, and have fun.
Oh, and be sure to watch out for Identifiable Frisbee Objects. Those hurt when they're fired out of a robot and into your face or any other body part for that matter.

We saw tons of extremely impressive robots today. It is going to be a deep field like usual in KC. Not too often that you see over 100 points scored in practice matches.

Some concerns today that if anyone on the field uses more than their allotted bandwidth it can introduce lag into other robots on the field. Teams are starting to check the camera/bandwidth settings for their alliance partners and perhaps should look at their opponents too to make sure they won't be affected. Seems like coopertition all over again. :p
Looks to be a very competitive regional. We may not be the only robot that can hit 7 discs in auto. All types of climbers, including one robot without wheels at all. May even see a defensive robot with a small fan as part of their blocking scheme. Can't wait to see how effective these designs prove to be in tomorrow's qualification matches.

Also very excited for these elims. Could see almost any alliance winning it all. Very excited to see what happens when a tall bot gets in front of 1806. Will get really crowded loading for 1986 then.
Cal here with an update from Hale arena: the number four seed managed top topple team titanium's win streak, but the number one seed came back with a vengeance. The arena is thirsty for the number two to upset the number one, but 3928 had to sub out.

Thanks! This is our first trip to Championships since we won Engineering Inspiration in 2008. Our team couldn't be more excited! But, we didn't get to the finals alone.
Thanks to our alliance: 3928 - Team Neutrino, and 1987 - The Broncobots for being awesome in elims. Team Neutrino's autonomous was amazing, especially in that match when our alliance scored 86 points in autonomous. Thanks to 1987 for, in SWATs words, "sprouting a tree" to play defense! Also, have to thank 2353 - The Legion for being ready to go in the final match when Neutrino blew a Victor.
Congratulations to 1986 - Titanium, 1806 - SWAT, and 2457 - The Law for a truly impressive and inspiring show at the K.C. Regional. It was terrifying and awe inspiring at the same time!

Did someone in your alliance actually go to midfield and pick up discs and still have time to get back to score them? Because I am curious if that was a real score or not; mainly because there is only 13 max on one side(specifically one side) and that would only be a max of 78 points by itself.

My bad. It said 86 on the scoreboard at the time, but I'm too tired to do math. You are right. Neutrino had a 7 disk autonomous and 1987 and us both hit 3 each for a total of 78. Still pretty impressive I think, but thanks for the correction.

And congratulations to the 2013 GKC Regional Winners and to the Finalists for making it as far as they did! Well, now this becomes really difficult to predict who next year's captain will be. Looks like the string of curious events is coming to an end.
As well, congratulations to all the teams that won awards, in particular team 1710 on yet another RCA. A well deserving team that us and any other team could hope to emulate.
As a side note, while people were at lunch, our team gladly accepted the 2013 Greater Kansas City machine shop award for "gratuitous use of the mobile machine shop." (Backstory: We showed up at the regional and discovered that our 10 point hanging arms were welded wrong. We then got parts here and there cut off and rewelded so that they work. After that, we discovered that in the new configuration, the arms would pivot the wrong way and not actually deploy. Another trip to the machine shop. Then, after fixing the pillow blocks, we discovered that the COTS pillow blocks simply wouldn't work. So we used the machine shop to make us some new custom pillow blocks. Final trip to the machine shop was to create a cross-arm bracing system. And those were just the trips to the machine shop that concerned our arm!)
Team 935 once again gives our congratulations to all the teams at Kansas City. We always find GKC to be a blast with its upbeat competition that has always keeps us on our toes.
Although our robot's performance wasn't at the anticipated level, we did solve many problems throughout the course of GKC. With OKC in a couple weeks, we promise to bring challenge to the table in a non "Disc-picable" way. :)
Cal here with an update from Hale arena: the number four seed managed top topple team titanium's win streak, but the number one seed came back with a vengeance. The arena is thirsty for the number two to upset the number one, but 3928 had to sub out.
Unfortunately our partner 1806 experienced a joystick failure in this semifinal match and was out for the entire teleop period, after contributing 18 in autonomous. We managed to score 101 on our own, but it was not enough against a very talented offensive alliance. It was a disappointing way to end our win streak, but in an FRC match there is simply a lot of technology outside of one's control. The up side is that it added some thrilling moments to the 2013 GKC Regional. We are happy with the win, and are delighted we were able to create an additional CMP berth for our friends 1939.

Thank you Cal. With all the wonderful mentors I get to work with it was an honor just being nominated by my team. To receive the WFFA in front of our home crowd in Kansas City was truly an awesome moment. (My wife's response was "Man, now you'll never stop doing robotics!" She is a very patient woman. :D )
Kansas City saw several firsts this weekend. The first time a team has captained the winning alliance twice (1986). The first time a team has won KC three times (1806). The first wildcard awarded in FRC history (1939).
The quality of robot construction was the highest I've ever seen in KC. Of the 17 elimination rounds played 11 of them had winning scores over 100 points including losing scores of 117 and 119 points. 2 robots successfully pulled off the 7 disc autonomous (3928 and 1986) and 1 team had a successful 5 disc auto (3528). Several robots came prepared for full court shooting, but only one pulled it off consistently (1806). While there were multiple robots capable of floor loading, slot loading was the preferred method with 2996 being among the fastest at it. We did have a few robots specialize in climbing, some of which even included a disc dumper for the pyramid goal (1806, 1810, 1723). Defense was clearly the focus of several designs, but no one came more prepared for it than 1982 who could elevate to 84" when needed and had a fan to boot. 1939 and 1775 were 2 of the most consistent performers all weekend and should garner a lot of attention in Arkansas and Oklahoma as they prepare for their 2nd regionals.
Congrats to Team Driven (1730) for winning Engineering Inspiration for the 3rd time in 5 years at Kansas City. Your team is always a pleasure to work with and it was a blast setting the regional (penalty free) high score with you.
Our team has some side bets on who will win Chairman's each year. We'll have to start betting 1710 versus the field pretty soon. Congrats on your 3rd Chairman's in 5 years.
All 3 rookies won awards at the tournament. Special congrats to 4522 on Rookie All Star. It was a thrill seeing your robot hit the autonomous shots and shoot the colored discs into the pyramid goal by the end of the weekend.
A big thanks to our alliance partners (1806 and 2457) We proved in semifinal 1-2 that we can't win without you. :o The drivers all said that 1806 was the one robot they didn't want to play against. It was nice to find in our 3rd pick a robot who could hit a couple shots in autonomous and had a fast drivetrain to boot.
Stats for the team this weekend:
OPR (according to Tracker) = 80.8
Average alliance score in qualifications = 121.4
Win-Loss record 16-1 (33-1 for the season)

It is "finals match 7" on the morenet link, our second quarterfinal (quarterfinal 3-2). However, it may not be worth your time since the camera was trained on the blue alliance the whole time and we were on red. If anyone got video, it would be awesome if it got posted. Maybe Neutrinos got some video, they were the ones with the fantastic autonomous mode. Titanium and and Team Up Next had great auto modes too.

A huge congratulations to 1710 for winning Chairman's. Its the most esteemed award in FIRST and their isn't a team more deserving. Also congratulations to team 1730 on winning engineering inspiration.
Thanks goes out to two great alliance partners in 1986 and 2457. We thank Titanium for picking us over the other powerful shooters that were at GKC and The LAW for playing great defense and protecting us from the flood of "pool noodle bots" that went north so we could use our full court shooting.
Also congrats to 1939 for a great performance and earning every bit of the wild card spot.

Hi Guys,
I was just wondering if any of you noticed issues with scoring at KC Regionals. I was just review footage shot by one of our mentors friends on 1625 of our team and their is a 20 point discrepancy in the scores for Semi Finals 2 Match 1. Video (http://youtu.be/9cxrBu3N56c?t=8m9s) (153 v 89) compared to the FMS score @ TBA (http://www.thebluealliance.com/match/2013mokc_sf2m1) & the 'official' score @ FIRST: (133 v 89).
How would a scoring issue this big happen? If it happened this time, has it happened before? I'm just worried about something potentially happening like this at this weekend's regionals and hurting the teams when it does. Luckily it didn't hurt either alliance this time.

It has been a issue at some events with the system not displaying right. I remember numerous matches in a row at the Kettering District where one of the scores was in the 200 or 300 range. On the note of effecting those in a match, when I was a driver I was taught to play hard until the end of the match and the scores will reflect that. Meaning I rarely ever knew what the display score was.
I'll check with our parents, as we had a mentor and a parent shooting video on their video cameras that should have captured it, as I was just shooting photos. Hopefully it Metro Sports caught it too :) I'll post it up if I do manage to find it :)
Alas, that QF match didn't have a 13-disk auto. You can see in the video on MOREnet that 3928 has a disk still in their bot at the start of teleop. They shoot it before going back to the loading station. Still an impressive performance by the alliance, though - 12 disks isn't anything to sneeze at.

So after the next match, I had the scoring table change the score to reflect what it should have been. We didn't announce it or make a big deal about it since it didn't affect the outcome of the match at all.
While I'm here, I want to say that I had a blast being the head referee this year. I know there are parts that could have gone more smoothly, so that is something to work on for future years (if I'm invited back). Every single drive team that I spoke with was extremely respective, courteous, gracious, professional, and fun. I hope I made it enjoyable for each and every team, as that was something I really strove to achieve.

Your entire team on the floor was super awesome about the whole situation and understood completely, which made it much less stressful for me, so I cannot thank them enough for that.

Yup :) If that experience has taught us anything, it's that we should keep extra electronics (*cough* Victors *cough*) in our mobile shop for those act of God emergencies :) Keep up the great ref'ing :)

We were bummed but it was clear how the rules worked. We knew that handing in the backup coupon was a one way ticket and we all know it was much better that our alliance got to field 3 bots instead of 2 in that last match.
We also appreciate being allowed to stand out there and cheer on our alliance in that last match. This is one of those FIRST lessons for life. Sometimes things break at just the wrong time. All you can do is smile, cheer on your friends and start planning how to not have that same thing happen next time.

As the captain for that alliance, we were very impressed by the quality and professionalism of Team Neutrino. They are a force to be reckoned with, now and in future years and we hope you come back to the Kansas City Regional next year.
