Here's to hoping we're good enough this season to get into IRI. We're making every effort to be, but who knows what the new year will bring. I'd really like to make a summer trip out of driving out there.

Looking forward to it! We're going to try to get down to Brown County (http://hmba.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=172:brown-county-gets-imba-qepicq-status) before IRI to do some Mountain Biking this year!

How many teams get invited? Also, if I may ask, how would a team go about getting an invitation?

The number changes each year, but it's an application process.

How many teams get invited?
Figure between 60 and 70.
Also, if I may ask, how would a team go about getting an invitation?
Do well during the FRC competition season. When a team applies to be considered for IRI, that's a big part of what the selection committee looks for.

Took my bike down there 2 or 3 years ago during IRI-- figured out eventually that I rode the trails "uphill", starting on the south end and working my way north. Everyone else was going the other direction. But hey, the ride downhill on the paved roads was a hoot!!! Be sure to consult with someone who knows the trails, there are some rocky treacherous parts.
//* wait, I meant starting on the NORTH end and working my way SOUTH. You should start on the South end!! *//

Why does IRI have to be at the same time as the Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree in WV?!

My daughter's birthday (party) will change for the thrid time this year...some of us are just really dedicated to participating in IRI.
Just had to miss IRI on her initial birthday. Should have done the math...

There is an awesome bike trail not to far for LN. Its called Town Run Trail Park. Its right in a busy area of town but once you hit the trails it's like your in the middle of no where. Personally, it is my favorite trail.

Well, seeing as how the $1,300 registration was already paid, I think I'm going to choose jambo. Just saying :/

Well, it's much more than that. It's basically the BSA's version of the Championship, but 10 days long.

For those of us whose teams' IRI chances are thin microscopic astronomically small non-existent unlikely, when and where should we start sending in volunteer emails?

I would go to Jambo over IRI. :P
Jambo is much LOUDER and a cooler trip. Gahh, I wish I was going.
Hopefully we can make it into IRI!

I am sooooo excited! It's my first jambo (I'm going as an assistant scoutmaster). Plus, it's right here in my "back yard" in West Virginia, just a little over an hour away! It sounds like it is going to be a great event.
Perhaps the FIRSTers going to Jamboree should check out the NEW STEM merit badges that will be introduced there, and earn them !!!

Last year, the invitation list was posted as a new thread to CD a little after 10:00 PM, but the IRI planning committee may post it sooner (or even later - they said they *hoped* to release the invite list today).
You can also be assured the list will appear on www.indianaroboticsinvitational.org (http://www.indianaroboticsinvitational.org).

Does anyone think we can get John Green to come to IRI this year? He lives in Indiana and seems like he would support FIRST.

Dean Kamen will be there as well! I need to figure out what date(s) so I can track him down. If anybody knows what date(s) he will be in WV for the jamboree, could you please post on here?

so... how about scouting...
How exactly is scouting handled at IRI, considering the limited space and amount of people? I know that teams generally collaborate, but how/when is that organized?

I was wondering the same thing. Our team has never gone to IRI, but considering the caliber of the event, we were planning on a scouting collaboration like we did at both our regionals and Archimedes.
I would like to know what role scouting plays at IRI- because in reality, all of these teams are teams I already know about (for the most part). I don't think a team needs scouting to know what kind of points 1114 is capable of putting up.

You might not want to rely solely on season performance...many teams will be breaking in new drivers and many robots have had a long, hard season :)

I certainly wasn't planning to. From what I understand, 67 always uses IRI to train new drivers. And other teams may have made significant improvements to their robots. I for one could see 217 coming into IRI with their robot functioning better than it did at all during the season.
From your comment I presume scouting is a big part of IRI, like I expected. But with the skeleton crew some teams are bringing, it has to be difficult for many teams to do so.
What does 987 typically do as far as scouting for IRI?

As far as i know 217 hasn't made that many changes. We saw them at MARC and nothing seemed different. Still no climber :(

For what it's worth, space isn't THAT limited at IRI in the stands. There are two stories' worth of stands on one side, and during quals they aren't all jam packed. It's not hard to have good visibility of the field.
It's also easier to scout at IRI since all of the teams are so good. It's hard to get bored if every robot you watch puts up a ton of points. There's also a ton of teams that don't get picked who would be great alliance members - it's less about finding the "one great team left" and more about finding who works with your strategy.

We take a small crew to IRI so we aren't able to scout as thoroughly as we do during the regular season so we pre-scout (and use season stats including OPR along with subjective observations) to establish a rough ranking list going into IRI. We check as many performances for each of the top 35 or so listed teams as we can to verify performance levels and adjust rankings accordingly. We still keep an eye on other teams though in case some of them have made improvements that would bump them ahead of some of the other teams on the pre-scout list. Scouting for us is admittedly less formal than regular season.;) To use a gambling term (a surprise for a High Roller, right?) and to quote from one of my fellow mentors, "With all of the really great teams at IRI, picking is really kind of a craps shoot".

To any teams who don't have a scouting system & want to work together, feel free to use our scouting cards & modify them to fit your needs. Our scouting strategy was highly accurate at the regionals we attended and helped us go into finals at both regionals (although it might be quite off here at IRI). More details on our system can be found here (http://www.teamneutrino.org/seasons/ultimate-ascent/scouting/).
