no, you don't want that. seriously.

I picked a random video from 2009 from 254's fantastic collection of robot videos on their youTube channel. This is a semi-final elims match.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Rpgf9jdVNM

Do you have any idea what's happening in that match?

Pinning. Lots of it. Totally legal in 2009. And the robots would clump together trying to pin each other, and the human players would score a lot more than the robots. And that was about it.

I did like the autonomous mode. It was a big mindgame of trying to predict your opponents movements so you could stop them from getting away from your human player.

I know most of you will think im crazy, but id love a chance to drive on regolith!as i was not part of lunacy!

No, since you have never driven on regolith, I cannot fault you for wanting to. If it isn't in a competition, it can be kind of fun slipping and sliding all over the place.

Once you have tried it, however, then I believe I could consider you crazy for wanting back on the field for a game. :ahh:

Saw this on the FRC blog post today...

weve asked AndyMark to put a cap on the number of pieces teams can order. More detail will be available after Kickoff.

Does this mean that there will be an abundant amount of game pieces this year? (ie. lunacy)

Not necessarily, but hopefully. It just means FIRST doesn't want the demand to exceed the supply just yet. They could have a production shortage (at the moment or throughout the entire season), in which case there are big problems. Or they want things to be fair.

It probably means FIRST wants to make sure the game pieces don't run out in the first 5 minutes (like the talons did, for example) so every team gets to order some.

Many teams rush out to buy a ton of game pieces right after kickoff. These are typically used for pre-season and off-season events... but if enough teams do that right off the bat, it can create a shortage for other teams.

Just look at last year... having 3+ basketballs was great for testing your robot, and there weren't really a ton of them on the field at any given time. But to put on an event, you'd need a ton just to account for wear and tear and replacement.

This decision means that every team should be able to get a couple, and then teams that need a lot for an event can go in and get what they need, if there are enough. If not, they'll be the ones waiting on backorders, not teams that need the game pieces to design around.

I dont know how, but in a dream Woodie Flowers accidentally showed me a letter titled "FRC 2013 Game: Space Race". Unfortunately I didnt open it as I didnt want to spoil the kickoff for me :)

Space relating to the curiosity landing?

I dont know how, but I felt COMPELLED to post it! :ahh:

What do the Curiosity rover and Navy Seals have in common?

A few thoughts

1) in regards to this being hint #1. I remember last year they outright gave us a hint saying that the kinect was going to be important to this years game. Maybe not in those words exactly.

2) 4" x 1" x 1" sounds like it could be a smaller kinect?

Probably the memory Pen/Thumb Drive w/ (is it Classmate Image on it?), which was a separate item last year I think too. There have been a number of smaller items over the years that probably arrive too late to get in the tubs but, are provided in the KOP (think I read that or asked a question and received that answer...though it was not an offical answer as it didn't really matter that much to me, we received it). Can you imagine unstacking & opening every one of those stacked plastic tubs to put a box that size in them at the last minute when for every tub someone else handles you can hand them that lil' box, and let them drop it in the tub? My guess; 4"X1"X1"=A Thumb Drive.

That would be great. I would like to see pulleys involved, actually. Can you imagine robots hoisting each other?

Ehhhhh I'd argue that the dumper robots scored more than the human player, but I'm agreed. Lunacy basically turned into a game of tag. Except that if "it" caught you, you were screwed.

I did like the autonomous mode. It was a big mindgame of trying to predict your opponents movements so you could stop them from getting away from your human player.

It was? Our code was just "full speed ahead" from the center starting positions. If we were lucky, the opponent robot had some sophisticated autonomous decision code (or none at all) and we'd just pin them to the wall so our human players could score as many points as possible.

My team found a great way to solve the problem of opponents knowing what we would do - we had like 6 different autonomous modes (plural was decided to be autonomoose), plus a seventh program that would pick randomly for each match - our opponents didn't know where our robot was going and neither did we!

I don't know, what this says to me is that Andymark may be the only supplier of gamepieces (like they were last year) so they will probably be something unique and custom made for FIRST (tetras!).

Not necessarily(though I personally think it'll be the case that the gamepiece will be unique). People were able to obtain whatever the ball manufacturer had left of basketballs with their branding(not FIRST branding), and IIRC they were pretty much the same as what you could get from AndyMark(with the same ball-to-ball variations, that is).

I just ran all the numbers through a binary to decimal converter and found something very interesting, all numbers are in the order they appear. there is a very obvious repeating pattern.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQk2Uz6jnw4

I wonder if we'll have to climb some type of structure then deploy mini-bots by "fast rope"? Maybe they'll be a little more capable than in 2011 because they'll be controlled by Rasberry Pi computers?

I think a decent portion of CD just went into spasms just at the thought that minibots may be a deciding factor again.

Well, Let's build on that.

Emphasis on build. Maybe something has to be by built into a set. Like in 2011 having to hang 3 tubes in the right order to get a bonus. Or perhaps stacking different pieces to make a totem pole?

Just a thought.

I was thinking about it, when they posted the binary, new lines have to be made due to the width limit of the text. So that means that the true shape of it would be that of the Cingular bars (old cellular company). Perhaps a stacking game as you mentioned, similar to the Tower of Hanoi (not the puzzle part, but the posts and cylinders)?

Well if the binary is "stacking" on each other through every iteration, this could lead people to believe that the line of thought that this year could employ some kind of reference to 2005/Triple Play might actually be true.

I designed a game based on this last year... It'll be really cool if it ends up as his year's game :P

... there is a very obvious repeating pattern...
I changed the 1's to solid blocks and the 0's to hollow blocks, then rotated the image and mirrored it. Looks a bit like the Burj Khalifa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burj_Khalifa), the world's tallest building. Adrian Smith was chief architect, and Bill Baker, chief engineer, of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in Chicago.
In this satellite view (http://www.flickr.com/photos/geoeyesatelliteimagery/4408207203/lightbox/) you can see it's 3-sided.

i tryed to do a bit of bit map imaging on the binary too, to try and figure out the pattern but found nothing. I think that the best idea about the pattern (IMO) is reference to hanoi towers in the sence that we will be making stacks that have to form a pyramid type shape, the closer it is to the corret shape, the more points

thinking about this more, its a triangular structure, 3 sides, 3 minutes in, 3 colours... maybe a connection

very interesting non the less

My final prediction for the game involves the first lyric to Kiss From A Rose.

There used to be a graying tower alone on the sea.

There will be a neutral structure in the middle of the field. It'll be the main focus.

I also think stacking will be involved, and the endgame hasn't yet been mentioned in this thread.

Hello all, I've converted the Binary (with some clipping done) to text. The base wasnt in 8 or anything significant.

I think the second line may have been missed by all. If the clue is referring to the singer Seal, then a "Singer great" may be a reference to the "Great Seal" of which, there are two for the United States.

http://images.unurthed.com/Campbell-Great-Seal-of-the-United-States-127.jpg

This is referred to as the Second Great Seal of the United States found on the one dollar bill. It clearly shows the pyramid: are we back to tetra shapes? The latin phrase is generally translated as the "new order of the world" which could be viewed as Dean's attempt to change society, or may be referring to a major change in FIRST's FRC game. The latter could be confirmation that robot dimensions are in fact changing. A smaller robot foot print would allow for more robots on the field. Many have pointed out that three alliances is not practical, but what if FIRST is making another leap forward and we are going to 4 vs. 4? Last year's asymmetrical driver's stations had one station smaller than the other two. Was this a test to see what impact it would have on teams? Few, if any teams complained about the reduced space for the drive team. So First could conceivably fit four driver stations in the end zone. I'm not sure what that would do to the Human Player position.

The increased robots per matched has been tied to longer game times as well. Could increasing the match to 3:00 minutes be one of the changes recommended by the Einstein report? If a robot or radio were to disconnect from the field, a longer match would possibly allow that machine to reconnect before the match ended thus reducing the impact of a dead robot. Also with four robots per alliance, one dead robot still leaves an alliance functioning at 75% capacity as opposed to 66% capacity for a three robot alliance.

Also, the pyramid is topped by the all seeing eye. Is camera vision playing a major part in this year's game?

Nicely predicted.

Anyone think they figured out what the hint completely meant? I am still confused...

The best I can figure out is the climbing thing is a pyramid.

Ive figured most of it out
A rose,Kissed- I have no Idea
A singer Great- This was a mistake and should be A sinster tree, sinster being a metal steel like alloy
A dinner missed-when you turn the Frisbee upside down it looks like a empty dinner plate as in you never showed up(or MISSED) to dinner
Holding weigh- Could either be a reference to the fact weight is now used to figure the score or the fact that you need to hold yourself up.

As for Astley I have no Idea either
Team 369 is very excited

Never gonna give you up- probably refering to the fact that after the game pieces are scored they don't get put back into play.

You are a genius, I would have made that connection. Any guess on A rose, Kissed

Here's my interpretation:

Pi: Round Frisbee.

A rose kissed / singer great:The first part and the first half the second refer to the song, performed by Seal. The second half of the second part (great) combines with the first to make "great seal", aka one of the Great seals of the USA, which has a pyramid on it.

A dinner missed: The fact a Frisbee also works as a makeshift plate.

Holding weight: Hanging/climbing off the pyramind.

Something possible:

In the Rick Astley hint

It wasn't a pushpin
It was a frisbee

If you converted the entire hint into ASCII and then converted relevant stuff from Chinese to English, you ended up with a Pyramid character, "House of Dun" and something related to pigeons/birds (Clay pigeons? Frisbees?). This might have been partially explored on page 2.

I'm certainly looking forward to everyone's creative ideas this year!

Like Frank wrote, it WAS a really good hint.

Threes all over the place - triangles (pyramids?)
Then a nice crypto (kissed by a rose, etc.)
Then a binary pyramid (here (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1206181&postcount=509))

This one was several layers deep, someone spent a LOT of time on this (and should now get back to work ;) )

Yes! There IS more to that mega-anagram (rearrange letters ... message hiding ...): At least for line 1 of the poem: A ROSE, KISSED becomes SEE DISK SOAR. I'll leave the rest to anyone who may be interested - but, we've got a 'bot to build! (Looks like it'll be a fun game.)

Hey guys, going out on a limb here but average FIRST, a FIRST twitter account, just said that this years game was baseball. Maybe the "3" means 3 bases?

Note to everyone: this thread is a year old and is NOT the current game hint anymore.

Since a spammer replied here and sent this thread back to the portal, I'm closing this thread to avoid any later confusion with whatever 2014 brings.
