It's not really a quote, but I guess you could take part of it.

Here's an incomplete list of the quotes that go at the bottom of each our team's blog posts.

Here are a couple I believe students should understand, and that pertain to particular skills students should have. However, they may not be entirely appropriate for your list.
We herd sheep, we drive cattle, we lead people. Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way.
--George S. Patton
I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand.
--Confucius
Champions are champions not because they do anything extraordinary but because they do the ordinary things better than anyone else.

Actually, if you want a quick list of FIRST quotes (from CD) look at http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/spotlightlist.php?. Another good source of quotes are poster's signatures...
One of my favorites lately has been:
"I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success"
-Nikola Tesla
The Nike video Gabriel linked to was great! It also led to this video "Steve Jobs explains the rules for success". I see a lot of what Steve talks about when I look around FIRST.

The one I say lots during the build process is
"Hope is not an engineering strategy"
You can modify it at will to be "design", "game play", "shipping", "programming", "project management", "lunch", etc.

One that I frequently use:
"Success in this game comes from a wealth of ideas and good engineering, not deep pockets."- Karthik Kanagasabapathy (Team 1114 & Innovation First Inc.)

Leadership
Leaders are like eagles: We don't have them here.
From Here (http://www.despair.com). Be sure to look at the posters for "motivation" and "adaptation". :ahh:

heres a quote i found from the founder of FIRST::safety::
I don't work on a project unless I believe that it will dramatically improve life for a bunch of people.
Dean Kamen
"Due to a shortage of robots, our workers are human and may react unpredictably when abused."
Try Leonardo da Vinci... He has plenty of good quotes.
For example, "The noblest pleasure is the joy of understanding."
"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." - R. W. Emerson
(That is also a favorite of Karthik's.)
Also, dunno who said this one, but:
"Theory is when you know everything but nothing works. Practice is when everything works but you don't know why. On our team, theory and practice comes together. Nothing works and nobody knows why."

But more seriously, all four of Karthik's favorite quotes (http://www.simbotics.org/files/pdf/effective_first_strategies.pdf) are lovely.

One particular line caught favor in the Columbia area in recent years. (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/37965?)
I've also been known to steal occasionally from wrestler (and Gamecock fan (http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l185/bricehorton/flairuscwoooooo.gif)) Ric Flair. Not that I would use all of his material around here, but this one works nicely (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjW9UXoKU2s) when going up against tough competition. I tried to transcribe the whole thing, but it's hard to capture the fullness of Flair's delivery. As such, I'll just take the most-remembered line: to be the man, you gotta beat the man. Lots of teams go into an event thinking they're the man (I've been guilty of it too) but a full realization (http://chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/37950) of where the man (http://chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/38151) actually is (http://chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/37647) you realize just how hard you'll have to work to leave with the gold around your waist.
Which brings me to another quote from boxer Joe Louis: "Everyone has a plan until they've been hit."

is what I'm going with now.
It should be good for several years.

I've been collecting quotes with the intent of posting them around our shop. Here are some of my favorites:
"You don’t need to prototype everything, just the things you want to work." - John V-Neun
"Excellence is contagious." - Andy Baker
"The secret to this whole thing is that it’s the robot that builds the team." - John Boucher
"FIRST is like pizza. You and I may like different toppings, but there is no wrong way to do it." - George Wallace
"I’m not going to tell you all that you all are winners. At this point you are smart enough to know whether you are or you aren’t." - Woodie Flowers
"I find that once the students start building a robotics project, they are too busy learning for me to teach." - Jason Brett
"Good robots with bad drivers can lose.
Bad robots with good drivers can win.
Good robots with good drivers can dominate." - James Tonthat

JVN's list of favorite quotes (http://blog.iamjvn.com/p/favorite-quotes.html) has some really good ones.
Anything by JVN or Coproli or Karthik in the CD spotlights are really good. Maybe not anything, but you know... they have some gems.
I would recommend having some determination quotes. There are a couple of good ones in here. I like Vince L. and Colin P. quotes:

JVN's list of favorite quotes (http://blog.iamjvn.com/p/favorite-quotes.html) has some really good ones.
From the list:
"Strike First
Strike Hard
No Mercy"
-Cobra Kai
:') So beautiful.
A quote for the Scouts and competition teams out there:
知彼知己,百戰不殆;不知彼而知己,一勝一負;不知彼,不知己,每戰必殆
It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.
Literal translation: Know other, know self, hundred battles without danger; not knowing other but know self, one win one loss; not knowing other, not knowing self, every battle must lost. - Sun Tzu
This is only true if you take the additional advice in in the Art of War.

I stumbled across a good John Adams quote yesterday reading Bunch of Amateurs (http://www.amazon.com/Bunch-Amateurs-American-Character-ebook/dp/B006E511ZI). (Really good book idea, mediocre book execution)
"I will strive with all my soul to be something more than Persons who have had less Advantages than myself." - John Adams
A few more I really like:
"Calling someone else a genius is easier than admitting to yourself that you are lazy." - Dave Gingery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_J._Gingery)
I think FRC does a great job cutting through the laziness by giving us only six weeks.
"This machine was so modern, so frightfully new, no one knew quite exactly just what it would do!" - Dr. Seuss, the Butter Battle Book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Butter_Battle_Book)
A silent prayer every time you close the 120 Amp breaker.
"Intensity is the price of excellence" - Warren Buffet (http://www.berkshirehathaway.com/letters/letters.html)
His letters to shareholders (linke above) are worth reading for the op-ed comments and life outlooks that go along with the financial business he is most famous for.
"Sleep is a no credit elective" - Paul Breed (http://unreasonablerocket.blogspot.com/)
Not everyone can build vertical landing vertical takeoff rockets in their garage. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXwsRJzI8vE)
