Hello everyone!
Justin and I would like to present our newest idea! We are planning that on Friday, February 22, at 9PM Eastern, Mike and Justin in the Morning will be hosting our first annual black tie affair, "Premiere Night"!
Our goal for Premiere Night is to have teams send us their "2013 Robot Release Videos", and we'll have an all night party of watching team's 2013 robots and then talking about them, all live on the air!
For your team's video to be eligible to be shown on Premiere Night:
Your team's robot release video must not have been released in any other fashion yet (YouTube, Chief Delphi, etc). We want everyone to be seeing your team's robot for the first time
If your team has released small teasers on the web, that's ok, your release video can still be shown on Premiere Night.
We will show any, and all team's videos! If your team is interested in participating in Premiere Night, please send us an email at mikeandjustinitm@gmail.com! You will need to send us the file directly, so we can upload it to our livestream account and have it ready for the show.
We can't tell you how excited we are about this, and we hope you guys get behind this as much as we are! This has potential to be one of the funnest nights of the season so far!
As always, we will be live at www.livestream.com/mikeandjustinitm on the 22nd.
Let us know if you have any questions!
Mike and Justin

A question, can the video be shown on the school's closed circuit broadcast channel first but not to any other FIRSTers?

Sure! As long as it's not released publicly it's fine!

Just curious, why not on the Wednesday before week 1?
Yeah we thought about doing that, but a lot of teams release their videos pretty soon after build season ends. So we didn't want to make teams wait that long. Hopefully teams can crank their videos out by Friday. I've already started working on our teams...
This seems like a really interesting idea.
I'll ask my team what they think about it and get back to you. You really need to get 118/148/16 on board for it though. Hopefully, one of them will pop into this thread.

Ok, for some reason I can't edit my original post, so here's an updated list of teams that will be releasing a video at Premiere Night!!
Teams that have confirmed a video for Premiere Night:

3481
3528
3885
3929
4183
We are also planning on participating. We shouldn't have any issues doing a video.
How are teams getting the videos to you? Most of them will be way too large to email. Maybe if teams post the video to their YouTube channels and email you the links, you can make a playlist of all the videos.

10-02-2013, 13:45
Put us down for a video. I think right now the plan is for the video to just feature 229, but it might end up having 4124 in it too.
Also, in regards to the email/upload problem, could the teams upload the videos to youtube ahead of time and just make them private/unlisted, and just give you guys the link? Either way, I'm extremely excited about this.

Livestream used to have this awesome interface with YouTube, where we could upload videos based on their URL, but they got rid of it :(. I suggest using Dropbox, or another sort of file hosting website to email it to us. Thanks!

My suggestion for teams to get the videos over to Mike and Justin would be to upload them to Google drive. Anyone with a Google account can do this and you'll have 5GB of storage.
You then will have to chose to share the video with mikeandjustinitm[at]gmail[dot]com.
They will then have access to the video. After the show on Friday you can delete if from your account and upload it to your team or personal YouTube account.
If anyone needs help doing this let me know.

There is no strict time limits, but generally videos seem to fall into the 2-4 minute range. Please no 10 minute videos :)
As far as getting us the videos, Google Drive will be the preferred method. This allows us to upload your video prior to the broadcast. Note there is a 1GB limit on our side for uploads so please keep that in mind. You will have to 'share' your video with mikeandjustinitm@gmail.com
We are really happy with the amount of interest expressed so far and we can't wait to see what teams have come up with for Ultimate Ascent!

ASAP. It will take a while to upload/organize 20-30 videos. So the sooner the better. We wouldn't want a team to not get their video on the show cause they sent it to us last minute.

Is there a deadline to submit videos?
Not a set deadline, but keep in mind we may have 20-30 videos to get uploaded. The sooner the better. Thursday night would be great. But early Friday afternoon would be acceptable. If it's submitted anytime after that there may be a risk we can't get it uploaded by show time.

I can talk to my team. The bigger issue is filming it... We are really behind and may or may not have time to film our 'bot.

We've done 2 hour shows in the past without a problem and didn't lose a noticeable amount of viewers at all. If it gets to be to long, then you can simply close your browser :-)
It's going to be a really fun night and I hope everyone can stay the whole time to celebrate the accomplishments of all the participating teams.

IMO you should watch the videos and have a small panel rank the robots and make a top 25 previews.

Yes but I doubt you'd just have a stream of just straight videos; you will have to have cutaways to you guys and intros and talking, which could turn nito a 3 or 4 hour stream.

Not if they start at 9pm EST, which I think they usually did.
With a show like this, the longer the better.
As someone who watched an impromptu M&J show at 2am a couple weeks ago, I couldn't care less when it starts or how long it goes. It's a celebration of all teams; it wouldn't be right to deny any team.
I do have one suggestion: go in order of descending team number.

I'd take it one step further and save the top 5 most impressive videos for last and do a count down. (My initial thought was to go in order of least to most impressive videos, but I'm not sure I'd want my team to have the least imperssive robot video...).
I cannot wait for the show!

I wouldn't put them from worst to best. [Some] people may lose interest and stop watching. Also, no one wants to be shown as the worst.
Instead, I'd start with a good one to grab the attention of everyone who normally doesn't watch/rookies. Then I'd proceed with semi-random making sure to scatter one's of well-known/good teams throughout to keep the attention of those watching. I'd also save the best few for the end.

I know this is your show you're running here, but seeing as you have all three world champs committing to this, I think grouping them together at the beginning or end may be in order.
Also would it be ok if:
a)a teaser that wasn't the official video was released publicly
b)the video would be sent out to sponsors and supporters, but not available publicly until Saturday?
The second one sounds ok, but I dunno about the first one.

Its okay, I want to post mine too, so i just sent videos to some people on messenger lol
Im gonna try to not see our reveal video until premiere night, though i was driving when we were filming...

Google Drive or directly emailing them the video would be the best way. If your not able to do this let me know and we can work out another set up to get the video to Mike and Justin.
we were finally able to get some awesome footage tonight and we are hoping to be able to get a video edited together in time. ...after some much needed sleep, of course.
put 2481 down and hopefully we can get the video to you in time.

Its just one of the few truths in FIRST; 2056 will win their regional, 177 plays on Einstein, Michigan plays the best matches, always pick Pink.

It's more than just always pick Pink. It's the corollary that you pick them no matter what shape they started the event in. Pink is just known for showing up at their first regional with the robot in an unfinished state (or doing a complete disassembly first thing out of the crate/bag), and you just think "man, they'll never get it running in time". And somehow, magically by the end of qualifications it just works, and they win (or at least play at a level well beyond their draft order).

If you remember 2010, we got together ( 179 & 1592) as #1 and #2 seeds and then we didn't pick 233.... the rest is history. I just remember walking back to the pit after selections and passing Andy, he says "hey we just got everything working". Well then we got our butts kicked while they weren't even in elims!

2007 should not be on a list of years to not pick Pink; that can be argued as one of their best years.

I don't know about Pink's 2006 bot's state out of the crate, but they were a force to be reckoned with at Florida that year, as well as going on to win Boston and eventually lose to the World Champions in division finals.
Pink's 2007 story is the quintessential "Pink effect" moment. At their first regional, they tore apart their entire arm at Florida, missed several qualification matches and were seeded last, 51st out of 51 teams. They were picked by 180, and were the primary tube scorer on their alliance, going to 3 matches in semifinals before ducking out to 179, 1902 and 108 (who sat the match out for mechanical problems). They scored a keeper and 4 or 5 tubes in their first quarterfinals match (http://www.thebluealliance.com/match/2007fl_qf4m1), putting up 104 points. Simply put, nobody but Pink tears down their robot, misses almost all of their Friday qualification matches, seeds last, and then is a first round draft pick and primary scorer on an alliance. You just don't do that.
Pink would go on to win the Archimedes division as an alliance captain with 71 and 179, before losing in 3 close matches to the Newton alliance in Einstein finals.

I don't think that anyone should compile and host other teams videos on their YouTube account without each teams permission. Let each team post them on their own account, some students put in many hours of work making these awesome videos let them get the credit for them.

I think the issue you're having is you're saving the project, which is in the Movie Maker file, and what you need to do is actually export the project in a video format.

If anyone is trying to submit a video last minute please send an email to mikeandjustinitm@gmail[.]com so that we can be on the look out for it.
At this point there are no promises that we will be able to include it, but we will try our best!
This looks to be a very exciting night I can't wait to see everyone's bots!

40+ teams at 5 minutes a piece (video and talking) is over three hours of robots! Will we have any idea of the order of the videos?

...what Dan said... goes for 180, too. I shopped the idea around and need to get one of our NEMs/students to make this happen .
Thanks,
Eric
I'm trying to follow the thread but got lost, what is this a response to Eric?
166 viewers half an hour before the set start time, impressive.
260 with 15 minutes to start.
WOW, 502 at show time, and still climbing.

The chat was going crazy. I'd like to propose that the livestream chat be used for student chatter, and http://webchat.freenode.net/ (channel #FRC) for more serious analysis and discussion.
Takers?

Well, maybe this is because GKC last year to me was a haze of standing on the edge of our pit programming, and running back and forth to the practice field, but I don't remember it having quite this much technical difficulty.
Sorry guys, I was the one responsible for 1986's video. I must have uploaded the wrong version. Here's it on YouTube WITH audio: http://youtu.be/uKy-IKDq_6o
Anyone know if 16 has uploaded?

Thanks. We're attending both GKC and Razorback, so I gotta study your video as much as possible to figure out a way to beat it. :)

We were relieved to finally see a belly climber.
Hopefully we can see it in Lubbock...if the dust isn't blowing in our eyes.
16's video will be uploaded in just over 30 minutes. I will post it here, on the FRC-Designs.com thread, and in a new thread if you want to see a second encore!

Thanks for a fantastic evening. I think you peaked at around 750 viewers.

We wanted to climb on the corner to leave the middle open for others, but it is very difficult. The video footage is not a good climb, obviously. We were missing some surgical tubing and had no automation - working on the controls. But we blew a gearbox right before bagging and didn't take time for more video.
And, yes, I have only been to Lubbock once and dust is what I recall.

If I may make a few suggestions for next year, I would like to suggest:
-Allow all submissions as you did this year; it's great for lesser known teams to be able to be shown to the whole community like this was.
-Keep random order with a couple superpowers at the end. The format was great for letting us see robots of teams we wouldn't have normally recognized by dangling the really good ones randomly. It was also pretty exciting wondering when our video would get pulled.
-Cap video length at 2 minutes. As amazing as the robots were, it gets rather fatiguing to watch video after video. The long videos got, honestly, boring and weren't fair to those who ended up being pushed back to very late at night.
-Define exactly what you want in a reveal video; keep build season footage to a minimum.
-Start earlier. We had a viewing party for it and had to miss the best of them because everyone's parents wanted them home by midnight.
Overall an excellent event and one you guys should absolutely do next year. FIRST should make a Release Video competition judged on videography and actually give a legitimate award for it.

Yes, yes, yes, AND YES!
Great suggestions. Thanks for participating! See you next weekend :)
I agree with Grim Tuesday with exception to the video length cap and video details. The video cap should be 3 minutes, as 2 minutes is sometimes too short to fit everything in. The video should have recommendations, but not an exact video guideline, as that ruins the variety seen in videos. Those are just some of my thoughts as the Bomb Squad's video producer.

I definitely agree with this. Guidelines are better than caps and rules; if someone thinks they can make a better video not following the suggested lengths or topic matter then by all means they should be allowed. I always remember 33's Chairmans videos where they do little skits. It's completely unorthodox and they end up winning Chairmans without the classic informative/interview video. As 639's video producer, I much prefer the short and sweet style we and 340 did but it isn't fair to force it on everyone: see 118 this year.
That said, I think some sort of hard length cap might be required to keep the entire event engaging for all the teams taking part in it, especially if more come next year.

Had a great time watching while staying at work late. Thanks for doing this, certainly think its a cool thing for some teams to participate in, while other teams choose to release video throughout build season, which I also think is important.
I would like to offer a few suggestions
I would cap video length at 1:45 seconds, and specify that a maximum of 15 seconds are allowed to be pictures of video of something other than video of a moving robot. This can be epic introduction, pictures/video of the robot being built, credits, or thanking sponsors.
Randomize the the play list before the production begins, and keep the order secret. This will allow you to queue the next video without having to spend time to search for it.
Having a set play list and knowing whats coming up will also allow you to prepare what to say next, so you have a little time to prepare while the videos are playing.
Overrall great work, thanks for the entertainment

I think if we're watching a robot reveal video, it should feature the real robot at least once, and for more than 10 seconds at the end.

103 and 25 will be releasing a new video next week. We put one together quick for the show and lets say the robots were missing a key part.

Is the archive up yet?
Yes, finally!
Thank you everyone for your patience! The stream is finally up! We had a few clip casualties though. 3 out of the 104 clips didn't make it, for reasons that are beyond our control (Livestream had some issues apparently that they can't fix). I'm not sure which exactly ones they are, but 101/104 clips isn't too bad huh? ;)
To get to the video... head on over to our page at http://www.livestream.com/mikeandjustinitm, and right under the main video box you'll see "Latest Videos" where the "Premiere Night" video is.
Thanks again for watching our show! It's something Justin and I won't ever forget! Can we get to 1000 viewers next year...?
