There's no restriction on when they can be fed; only that they start behind the alliance wall. I believe what you're thinking of is that only the colored alliance discs can be fed over the wall in the last 30 seconds of the match.

Thrown, not fed.

In the last 30 seconds human players can throw discs - but only red and blue ones.

You can always feed any color disc.
