View Full Version : Best Robot Desktop Photos
I enjoy putting high resolution and high quality robots on my desktop (especially with a white background)!
My all-time favorite desktop photos are from the Cheesy Poofs, (Slipstream (http://media.team254.com/2012/08/slipstream.jpg) and Skyfire (http://media.team254.com/2012/08/skyfire.jpg))
I don't have many high res photos for 2013 or for previous years, Are there any other great high res photos ones that have been posted this year ?

I can't say this is the best, but we like it.

Feel free to browse my Hobbies gallery (http://billbo911.smugmug.com/Hobbies). There are tons of photos on there from the last several years. You may use any photo you like, just let me know so I can see what you've used it for. Your best bet is to view it in it's "Original" size and save a copy from there.

It's not a full robot, but I have this (https://picasaweb.google.com/117769834305511597729/2012BuildSeason?noredirect=1#5718322479721542738)a s one of my background pictures.
Not quite a white background, but here's one one of our robot.

I'm a little bit partial to this (http://team696.org/files/pics/696_Robot_Shuttle_HiRes.JPG)
Here's another nice one (http://kiet.us/wiring.jpg), but not high enough res.
And one more (http://kiet.us/2009robotlarge.jpg)
This (https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-HfSTfJav4_U/Tb-oEy5oDlI/AAAAAAAAD-M/fZ4HzyIq2s0/s1131/DSC_0089.JPG) has been my Nexus 7 wallpaper from the day I got it (only a couple months after I took it).
Edit: I'm using a much higher-res version of the same picture, that is. Too cheap to pay for cloud storage of all my highest-resolution photos!

If I might ask, how do you guys set up your photoshoots? I'd imagine special / professional equipment involved? For example, what the background actually made of? (besides beautiful white nothingness)
Here's the background I've been using since 2008 on my computers and phone:

The backdrop is white seamless paper. It is about 8' wide and can be purchased at most photography stores. Otherwise we use qty 2 200watt/s studio strobes with umbrellas (bounced off of the inside, not soft lit) and some photoshop magic. Photoshop is only used to remove some of the gradients that appear in the white background and to fix any color cast in the polycarb, etc due to the ambient lighting.
Here is a picture of us setting up the backdrop, etc.

I have often wondered how you get the polycarb to look perfect - no flash reflection, etc. off of it. I guess it's a combination of pretty even lighting from the flashes, and some nice editing.

This is a background that was created by Aidan Solala '12 of team 610's 2011 robot.
A lot of team members use it for various backgrounds.
It's not a full robot, but I thought this picture (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/img/5ac/5acd59deff6d89aaacf57eb7814b7c5d_l.jpg) I took of a gearbox I made turned out pretty well.
The inspiration from 254 is obvious, even in how the picture was taken!
And occasionally to add wheels to the robot.

I've heard the Poofs machine their wheels late in the season....sometimes very late. Never heard the full story either though. We have a large stockpile of wheels from previous seasons, so usually the exact dimensions and interface of wheel we want to use is available for testing/practicing. As such, we only need to manufacture the competition-legal ones just in time to compete, since they're pretty light and easily fit within the witholding allowance.
Karthik was pretty disgusted last year when I told him at a Week 3 regional we were both attending that we hadn't started manufacturing any wheels yet.
Here's the background I've been using since 2008 on my computers and phone:

I'd like to send a huge thanks to 254 for making such beautiful robots, and taking such nice pictures of them.
I want to throw these out there for anybody else who uses three monitors (5760x1080)
These are the three that I threw together, and currently cycle for my background.
http://imgur.com/a/jiX2X
However, if you want to download and use them (At least on Win 7), you should grab these ones:
http://imgur.com/a/OyBvC
Windows 7 (Don't know about other versions) doesn't lay out multi-monitor backgrounds properly, because it always starts the image on your primary monitor, not the left-most monitor :P So this second set compensates for that.
Not a white background, but still a nice picture of our robot this year.

Anyways..
This is my favourite from the Kettering District. (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3re3AXrzbLFNVJTWlhsaFJ2Q1E/edit?usp=sharing) It was before we added our arm and "floor pickup". Our shooter was also mounted sideways. We were a bit tippy...
Also like this one from a demo we did. (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3re3AXrzbLFUjVZQnRjd3BEREk/edit?usp=sharing) We had some time before our next group of kids came in, so I took advantage of the time and took some neat pictures. That was the best one.
I also got photo-happy with Apex at IRI. (https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B3re3AXrzbLFMXd4U0hTdlM5RXM&usp=sharing)
As the end of build gets near, take a high quality photo of your robot.
