View Full Version : VEX Worlds 2013
Who's planning on attending the VEX Worlds 2013 (http://www.robotevents.com/2013-vex-robotics-high-school-world-championship.html) ?
They have a new structure this year of 5 divisions ! It will be interesting to see how that pans out at championship level event with 420 teams.
I would like to meet other teams that do FRC and VEX to see how they structure their programs. The DiscoBots have tried to keep a balance for 5 years now but we are always open to new ideas.
I'm also excited to meet the amazing VEX volunteers and people that post on CD. Anyone planning on volunteering ?
I'm planning to stop by Saturday since it is practically in my backyard.
Me and another teammate are hoping to bring our FLL teams over :]

Team 359A, 3590A, and 3590B will be there.
359A is preparing for the excellence award presentation along with the actual competition. Its the same drive team as our FRC robot, except one of the students is part of another VEX team from another city here in Hawaii, Team 4109.
With that and FRC championships coming up, we are in rush mode in preparing for both trips at the moment.
Look for me in the College Division where I will be the head ref.
The college teams play 1v1 but build the two robots on their alliance. The switch this year is that one robot must fit in a 15” cube and the other a 24” cube. I am excited to see how the college teams worked with their new sizes.
2068 has four students attending this year as members of 2068H.

I guess I better go too since it is in my backyard.
829A will be there representing the Digital Goats. I will not be able to attend but stop bye and say hello to the team and my son Nick who is their mentor.

Aloha!
Team 3880 will be there. We won an Excellence Award and planned on entering that competition. Sadly we were so involved with FIRST that we did not register for the award judging in time. :(
Had no clue you had to apply to be judged at Vex worlds... We did enter a video and essays that were required in time though, didn't know there were more that had to be submitted to be judged... seems redundant.
This was our first time competing in three FIRST regionals and was such a huge undertaking that Vex was forgotten about until we got back on the islands on the 2nd. Which was a day past the cutoff.
We will be bringing a small group of students as the rest are staying back to get everything ready for FIRST championships...
Good luck to all and see you there!
The divisions were just announced for ... VEX worlds (sorry FRC people.)
They released the division lists on a planned date.
I will be volunteering in the Arts division.

I'll be attending my first ever VEX Worlds, looking forward to it
As luck would have it, business travel is taking me to the LA area. Will be my first experience with the Vex program.

It's a short walk as our pits will be right next to each other.
The 2013 VEX Robotics World Championship should be an amazing event. With over 700 teams in attendance from 24 countries, this event really feels like the "Olympic of Robotics'. There's even an Olympic style parade of nations during the Friday opening ceremonies! Also unique to VRC is the five division setup being used in the High School competition. This set up allows for smaller divisions, givings teams more matches and a more manageable scouting experience. Instead of having a tradition playoff between the division winners, the 5 division winners play off in a "round robin" format, where each division winner plays each other once. After these 10 matches, the top two ranked division winners play in a best 2 out of 3 final. Imagine how cool this would be for FRC?
VEX and the RECF are very thankful for the support received from the FRC community. Here's just a small sampling of the FRC teams who have team members volunteering at this event: 33, 78, 118, 188, 148, 177, 217, 254, 1114, 1241 1511, 1538, 2056, 2587, 3847. We also have some very familiar faces to the FRC community MCing at this event. JonDarr Bradshaw, Grant Cox, Eric Eckhart, Jack Kentfield and Jim Zondag, just to name a few.
If you have a chance in the next few days, you should really check out some of the event. Information about the 2013 VRC World Championship and webcast links can be found at http://www.robotevents.com/championship/

This sounds awesome. You're really making me sad that I'm going to miss it.
Hopefully I'll be able to make it sooner, rather than later.
See you next week.

Product unveiling in the mix, is this VEX specific or will it include new products for VEXPro as well?
I'm sure the answer will be "wait and see"
Sidenote: I really do need to get more involved in local VEX.

Normally I would say, "wait and see", but there will be no new VEXpro products released at the 2013 VEX World Championships. All of our VEXpro products will be unveiled will be some time between September 1st and December 1st.

Sadly I'm not going because of money, but other 1200 teams are! Look out for the two 1200 teams that are going!

For those interested, the VEX webcast is up and going with their opening ceremonies at http://www.robotevents.com/robot-competitions/vex-robotics-competition/2013-vex-robotics-high-school-world-championship.html There were some really neat robots in the practice match and it should be a the best robotics competition going on this weekend.
New Vex game is being announced in 25 minutes (8:30 est), along with some new Vex products. Check it out on the webcast!

Looks like VEX is trying to take on FIRST LEGO League head on with a new product line. That should be interesting....
I say looks like because I can't hear anything Paul and JVN are saying on the webcast. :)

Works similar to thebluealliance gameday, go to webcasts, then drag "Ceremonies" to the middle. It has sound.
VEX IQ is really impressing me.
Looks like LEGO blocks, can CAD it with a brand new Autodesk assembly program, and you program it with something similar to Scratch. You can also program with RobotC
This changes things massively for younger robot kids.

The round robin is defiantly much better then the current division setup that FRC has. Wonder if one day FRC will adapt it as well?
