In 2002 through 2004 the divisions were released the Tuesday 9 days before the beginning of the championship. That ended up ranging anywhere from before the last regional ended (2003) to 10 days after the last regional ended (2002).

In 2005, the divisions were released on a Monday, 10 days before the beginning of the championship (9 days after the end of the last regionals).

In 2006, the divisions were released on a Friday, 13 days before the beginning of the championship (13 days after the end of the last regionals).

In 2007-2009, the divisions were released on a Wednesday, 8 days before the beginning of the championship (3-4 days after the end of the last regionals).

In 2010, the divisions were released on a Thursday, 7 days before the beginning of the championship (4 days after the end of the last regionals)

In 2011, the divisions were released on a Friday, 13 days before the beginning of the championship (6 days after the end of the last regionals)

In 2012, the divisions were released on a Wednesday, 8 days before the beginning of the championship (4 days after the end of the Michigan and MAR championships).

Why? By hitting F5, or because you sprayed some drink across it when you laughed after seeing 148's web page?

Regardless of the document, registration for St. Louis CMP closes the Tuesday after the event you qualify in. I'd factor in one more day for teams that get in off the wait list or a ranking team that qualifies from Michigan due to another team that does qualify choosing not to go.

Championship moved a week later that year and there was no Week 7, which game teams an extra week to prepare.

Once the divisions are released, it will display the team lists for each of the divisions like this (screenshot uses 2012 team lists). The team numbers will be links to The Blue Alliance pages.

How are divisions determined? Is it random?

Nobody really knows. Used to be fairly simple: sort the teams by number, then every fourth one is in the same division (1, 5, 9 in Archimedes, for example). A few years ago, they scrambled it so well that nobody could predict the divisions. And nobody's stepped up and said they've figured out the divisions before they were released since then.

If you click on those Division Team Lists, it brings you to last years'. So yes, it is a trick :p

*Also, if you click on the 2013 Team List, that just brings you to all of the teams currently signed up for World Champs this year, not separated into any divisions.

The guy behind FRC Megaphone has created a division notifier!

Only one team per phone #, so choose wisely - but then you'll be texted as soon as divisions are released!

http://divisions.frcmega.com/

Side note - If you don't already use FRCMega, you should for Championship (FRCMega.com) - I have used it almost every week to follow friends' teams, and it works like a charm.

No, Megaphone and Division Notifier (or any other FRC service I build in the future) won't send you spam text messages, and your phone number will never be given out to anyone. I build these services for the community, not to sell phone numbers.

I believe HQ's target is 408 FRC teams this year. As of this post, TIMS is returning that only 393 teams are registered for championships. (https://my.usfirst.org/myarea/index.lasso?page=teamlist&event_type=FRC&sort_teams=number&year=2013&event=cmp) If they were to release divisions now it would be... highly unexpected.

102 per division also makes it a 17 match cycle count and no need for surrogate matches, if you went less teams you would have to go down to 96 teams(384 total teams) in each division to not need surrogate matches. We also don't have space for 432 teams (108 teams in each division)

I will say that HQ not following the removal of merit bids from the pool by Week 2 or 3 at the latest and inviting off the waitlist accordingly, they have put themselves and teams in a sticky situation. I imagine a number of teams are getting the call and having to turn it down. On 422, it took a tidal wave of sponsor support, parent involvement, and school administration bending their own rules in a span of 36 hours.

Planning ahead is not unreasonable. A number of teams scheduled their trip to the Championship months ago, having no idea if they'd actually be going. It's easier to cancel a school field trip at the last minute than to try to get one approved on short notice.

They could and if they don't get the teams I can see them doing it. I told my team to not expect divisions until tomorrow and Monday at the latest...

FIRST can't make teams go and they can't start telling teams they can't go now they've signed up, to make the divisions "equal". No body complains that each regional/district has different amounts of teams. As long as each division got the same # of matches I don't have a problem with uneven team counts in the divisions.

Personally i have no problem with it either, but i was unsure of if FIRST would have a problem with that. It would make the most sense, because getting two more teams to attend is a lot easier than 14 on this short notice.

The championship event is a meta-game of inches. People will complain about unbalanced/unequal divisions, whether you think it's silly or not.

Planning ahead is not unreasonable. A number of teams scheduled their trip to the Championship months ago, having no idea if they'd actually be going. It's easier to cancel a school field trip at the last minute than to try to get one approved on short notice.

That's a fair point. If both sides planned ahead, there would be less of a scramble altogether.

It take a long time to pre-scout 100 teams...

Back in 2010, I believe 1732 added an autonomous mode to block 469 from the tunnel after the divisions were released. This year, I could see teams building a tall FCS-blocker if they find themselves in a division with some of the best tall FCS.

While that may help a bit to have it early, it really only takes $5 in pool noodles and 10 minutes to make an efficient FCS blocker...

I'm pretty sure it'll be pseudorandom as it has been each year, and so about 1 in every 4 years that can happen. The Eh Team? 1 in about 16 years.

25% chance.
1114 has a 1.00 chance of being on the same field as 1114. 2056 has a 0.25 chance of being assigned to each field. Since one of the 4 has 1114, the total chance is 1.00*0.25= 0.25

If you want to pick a particular field, then it is another 1 in 4 chance, so total is one in 16.

Back in Atlanta, I think they used to pick the two 'strongest' divisions to be on the side facing the VIP areas in the arena. That was Galileo and Archimedes, IIRC. I think this is one reason behind the curie curse.

I'm loving the archimedes division right now, with 20, 33, 71, 254, 469, 973, 987, 2590. Lots and lots of floor pickup. We will probably even see another 90 point autonomous.

Curie looks pretty good too, although very different. They have a few high profile floor pickups: 233+359+2056. But they also have 2 of the best fcs: 67+148, as well as 1 of the best cyclers: 1717.

"FMS" page always gets updated before the regular "TIMS" page, sometimes by a great deal of time. Justin & his "source" used this to pull off the best Division reveal (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85064) IMHO. Revealing team by team, it was like the first FRCTop25 Broadcast.

I'm sure Zach will use the FMS page in the future. FRCMega has been a great addition to our community created apps & services. FMS page would be easier to parse for the an SMS generating script anyway, since it is designed to be parsed by a computer. I personally use the FMS pages all the time anyway. They are way easier to paste into spreadsheets and always on 1 page.

Australia: Archimedes, Galileo

But Just to add Canada has 27 teams:
2 Archimedes
8 Curie
10 Galileo
7 Newton

While the Dominican Republic team is in Curie

Has anyone been able to figure out an algorithm for the division assignments?

There seems to be a pattern in that international teams are grouped in specific divisions.

Israel: 2 each in Galileo, Newton, and Curie.
Mexico: 3 Archimedes, 2 Curie, but 1 Newton.
Australia: Archimedes, Galileo
Netherlands: Galileo
Turkey: Newton.
Brazil: Galileo

By Team Number:

Any guesses?

Substituting T for N, pretty sure we get a transcription of a piece of Dean's DNA... :p

So that's how they assign divisions!

Yeah, I thought about my miss of the Dominican Republic after my post.
My bad.
I was too lazy to parse the Canadian teams. Again, my bad.

Nonetheless, what do you think the powers that be used as an algorithm?
In the past it was a simple ACGN repeating, this year... IDK.
Is there a pattern of Regional winners being equally spread through the divisions?

Nah... it's all in pi.

Just FYI, with all of the hype about divisions last night, we set a new record for most users online on Chief Delphi, with 918 users online simultaneously.

Wow, no wonder FIRST's servers died for so long...

Whoops, I meant 988. ;)

13 Florida teams

4 Newton
3 Curie
1 Galileo (Poor Lonely Shark Attack)
5 Archimedes

Adding in teams that qualified for a slot in Florida (1772 Brazil, 4091 Dominican Republic, 4451 South Carolina)

5 Newton
4 Curie
2 Galileo (Shark gets their Brazilian Alliance Partner)
5 Archimedes

Don't worry, we'll make Florida proud! And hope to see some Florida friends on Einstein? ;)

Happy to see 1772 in our division though! :)

Wow, no wonder FIRST's servers died for so long...

This has probably been discussed several times in the history of CD, but I'm a relative newcomer. <type=rhetorical>Isn't there something wrong that CD can stay up under a load that brings down the FIRST servers?</type>

CD isn't under the same load as the FIRST servers. The FIRST servers are getting hit by everyone here on CD and by all the people that are not.

<type=rhetorical>You do understand what a rhetorical question is, right?</type> :D

I understand that the FIRST site has more people trying to access it than CD. Adding in the various scrapers that people write, it must have a lot more traffic. Here's the real point: FIRST should know that, and have the appropriate capacity. There was an implied sarcasm tag on my post....

On the first divisions that broke from the ordered numbering of the past, I did a simple analysis. I looked at the teams in sequential order and the streaks of same division. It was very similar to what one would expect in a pseudorandom pick 1 of 4 divisions for each team. If you are curious, I posted my spreadsheet on CD, it would be easy to run again for this year. I figure it is pseudorandom, so I have lost interest.

The whole FIRST site didn't crash, just some parts. The FMS pages never went down, which is important.

So time for more useless data:

The combined team numbers for each division is:

Archimedes: 207649
Curie: 242674
Galileo: 232662
Newton: 211761

Meaning if you average the team numbers you get the following:

Archimedes: 2076 (2007 Team)
Curie: 2427 (2008 Team)
Galileo: 2327 (2008 Team)
Newton: 2117 (2007 Team)

Which implies that Archimedes and Newton average 7 years experience per team while Curie and Galileo average 6 years based on team numbers (I am going through to get the actual years of experience per team to see what the actual result is since numbers don't equal years of experience when you are talking about less than 500)
