Hello everyone!

Plans are now underway for the 2013 Rah Cha Cha Ruckus! We would like everyone to know that the 2013 Ruckus will definitely happen, but dates and venue have not been finalized. As usual, it will be in the Rochester area (hence Rah Cha Cha) around Halloween (towards the end of October or early November). Please keep these dates in mind, as we hope to put on yet another wonderful event, building off of such a great one last year. We look forward to seeing you there!

In the past, we have seen some great teams both locally and teams who have traveled to come and the Ruckus has grown into an excellent 1 day off-season competition and Halloween Party! We hope to be able to keep up the energy and build off of all of the positive feedback from last year.

More details to come soon!

We're strongly considering returning. It was an excellent event last year and now that we've been kicked out of the Northeast, getting some experience with some of the teams that compete at Finger Lakes would be really valuable. Of course it all depends on scheduling, timing with other offseasons, etc.

Hello Everyone! The wait is over! We are pleased to announce that the 2013 Ruckus will take place on October 12th at the Main Street Armory (http://www.rochestermainstreetarmory.com/) in Rochester. We have moved to an even bigger and better home! Our new venue should allow for all of the fun we had last year and more (the floor is 225’ x 185’)! On top of that, we believe the Armory will add extra flair to our little Halloween party because it has been officially been declared “haunted” by TAPS (of Ghost Hunters fame). Registration for teams and volunteers will be available shortly! Remember to follow us on our website (www.ruckus.penfieldrobotics.com) and facebook!

Awesome! So excited for Ruckus, once again. I'll definitely be there! 1405 is very likely to be in attendance, but I won't speak for the whole team juuuuust yet. We do have some improvements we want to make on our machine, and hope to hit the ground running at Ruckus! After the team's first regional win in 10 years at this past Finger Lakes Regional, we're all looking to improve and defend our title next season!

And I am even more excited to catch up with the amazing people Ruckus draws! Especially since Ruckus is rumored to be drawing in a strong international crowd from North of the Border (rumor is we may have 2/3 of the World Champions in the Haunted House), this should be a fantastic event to make some great friends, as well as on-the-field action!

At IRI I heard from five teams who said they wanted to come (48,125, 1241, 1310 and 1334 and I suspect 379 and 610 would come too).

48 definitely expects to attend. I'd bet on 610 too. However 379 told me they plan on attending the Ohio State Championship event in Cincy in late September in lieu of going to Ruckus this year.

Ruckus is on Team 174's list of things, but nothing is confirmed yet. Our robot has gone though many upgrades and updates, so it should be a much better robot than you saw at FLR. Either way, I should be there and will volunteer depending on pending events.

Am I popular enough to want to be pied yet? haha

In Canada do most family's celebrate Thanksgiving on the day of the holiday, on Monday, or opt to celebrate on the weekend? Ruckus is on Saturday which would allow for festivities on Sunday as well as Monday.

Thanksgiving isn't as big a deal in Canada as it is in the US but for those families with cottages it's the last long weekend of the season. Those who celebrate with a family gathering and dinner tend to do so on the Sunday or Monday which will cut down on the effect on the Ruckus.

It looks like, barring a date change, Team 48 will not be attending Rah Cha Cha Ruckus this year, as we found out October 12th is in direct conflict with the school's homecoming. I know of at least two other schools who have similar conflicts, and perhaps there are even more.

Considering we use this event to introduce new students to an exciting FRC competition setting, and considering most uninitiated new students (and many vets, which is still understandable) would choose homecoming over getting up at some ungodly hour to ride a bus five hours to Rochester, we cannot justify attending the competition this year. This is really unfortunate, because we've had a lot of success and fun at this competition - finalists in 2011, and winners in 2012. Plus, who doesn't like the chance to pie yours truly in the face?

Given this conflict, and the already-stated conflict with Canada's Thanksgiving, I urge the Ruckus committee find a way to get the event back to its traditional close to Halloween date in future years.

...or, you know, move the date back this year. :p

We're locked in to the 12th on the contract with the Armory so we can't change the date.

That's unfortunate. That's a very busy weekend for us from the land of moose, polar bears and igloos. However, since it's the on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend hopefully it won't be too big of an issue for teams to bring at least a skeleton crew. I too wish it was closer to Halloween, but I'm glad that the event will run rather than not at all due to lack of a venue.

We actually are pretty well represented by our neighbors to the North. And we expect 610 to sign up eventually as well.
We like having it around Halloween too but a contract is a contract so we will have to live with the choice this year!

Luckily for us, the date change removed a potential conflict and thus it looks like we'll be returning to this event for 2013. Now that we're effectively part of the "upstate NY region", it's probably healthy for us to compete at an event with teams we'll be working with / against at Finger Lakes next year.

1405 is extremely excited to be attending Ruckus, as usual! We've got some special tricks in the works and we're hoping to make a big impact as we prepare for next season! And, of course, to compete with all the star power at this Ruckus! Looks like Ruckus will have a more than terrifying representation from The Great White North, as well as some big names from the local area and beyond.

I personally can't wait to meet up with some people! Too bad I'll probably be busy running around with the team!

On a side note, is there a contact set up to sign up for Pie-in-the-Eye? I'm not sure if the contact form on the site would be the appropriate place for that.

Hello Everyone!

A few updates! So far, there has been some excellent interest in this year’s Ruckus and we already have 20 teams registered! With the caliber of some of the teams coming, Ruckus is definitely going to be spectacular! At this point, please understand that registered teams must be paid in full by September 30th, and that your registration is not confirmed until you have paid. There are many teams looking to compete and your spot cannot be guaranteed otherwise. In order to keep Ruckus as a one-day event with enough matches to make it worthwhile, space is limited.

As far as scheduling, we do encourage teams to load in Friday afternoon if possible. This should allow a faster start in the morning. Furthermore, we are pleased to announce the possibility of communications testing Friday night depending on how quickly the field comes together. This is not a guarantee, but we hope that it may help resolve inevitable field issues. More details will follow!

Remember to keep up with news on our website (http://ruckus.penfieldrobotics.com/) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/rahchacharuckus)!
Thank you, and we are looking forward to a great event!

I've heard mumbles and rumors from some that more than one of 2791's alliance partners from this year are considering the trip. We had some pretty rad alliance partners this year.

I personally can't wait for the Ruckus. Last year it was one of the best offseasons I'd ever competed in. We had the pleasure of working with 1334 - their robot was pretty good but their team was phenomenal. We knew they had great things coming to them in 2013, but we had no idea they'd be as good as they are.

The depth this year is phenomenal. Multiple World Champions, 50 point dumpers, full court shooters, multi disc autonomous modes, and quality cyclers. There will be teams that won regionals as the captain or first selection that fall to the second round. I think 2791's going to have to step their game up big time to keep up.

There will be teams that won regionals as the captain or first selection that fall to the second round. I think 2791's going to have to step their game up big time to keep up.

Thanks for the kind words, Chris. Last year at the Ruckus we had some field communication issues and were dead in the water for some matches. Hope that doesn't happen this year. This has been our best year to date and included our first blue banner. The team is really looking forward to attending again this year.

Unfortunately, 1551 has determined that we will not be able to attend due to the conflict with Homecoming. We simply won't have enough experienced team members to make the expense worthwhile.

I hope next year!

Wow, I just noticed the relative strength of the Canadians among the 35 teams on that list.

Sorted by OPR, none of the 7 Canadian teams fall below 11th, and Canadians are 5 of the top 6.

Sorted by OPR, none of the 7 Canadian teams fall below 11th, and Canadians are 5 of the top 6.

And, you know, two of them are world champions :P

We are now allowing teams that have signed an initial robot in the event to sign up a second robot. Be aware it will still cost $250 to sign up the second robot.

Looking forward to Ruckus 2013! Three questions as we prepare for Ruckus:

1. Any estimation on number of qualification matches per team?

2. Because of the number of teams, will eliminations be a standard competition setup this year versus what was done in the past?

3. Will the webcast be running off of this link (http://ruckus.penfieldrobotics.com/webcast/)?

Can't wait!

We hope to have 6-7 matches per team. As we did last year, the elimination set up will be the same as a FIRST competition. Teams responded well to this, so we decided not to change anything.

I don't know about the webcast.

We're still working to determine if a webcast will be possible this year. Due to the venue change, there's a number of logistics for us to work through to make it happen. We're trying, but it may not come together -- if it does not, we do apologize for all those out there who want to watch live. If we are able to produce one, it will be at the link you asked about.

We will have match video posted to youtube after the event concludes either way.

Looking forward to seeing all the teams at the event! Best of luck in the competition, and hope you all enjoy it!

We're... kinda ready?

We've been making upgrades to our robot over the past month that allow us to stack frisbees in our shooter and load from the middle slot. Both these modifications together should let us cycle more quickly and reliably. We're still working out the kinks of these changes, but our on-season driver was able to load frisbees twice as quickly and shoot a little faster than before. Ideally this will make us good for 4+ cycles a match. We'll see.

Either way, we're definitely super excited for Ruckus. The competition field is crazy deep this year. The prospect of a pair of Canadian teams as the #1 alliance is quite scary!

1310, 1334, 4039 610 and 1241 are obvious threats to win it all. Watch out for 20 who had a very disappointing IRI and will be looking to put on a show.
3173 is the only FCS at Ruckus and is dangerous. 191, 340 and 1511 are savvy veterans who know how to handle themselves.'
Don't sleep on the FLR champs 1559. 1405 and 3003.
If I went by these rankings I'd make 3015 my sleeper.

4930 performing like 1507 is not a fair assumption. The robot we (4930) will be using is not, strictly speaking, 1507's second robot. 1507 never had a second robot. They did have, however, a spare shooter assembly and drive base, which they generously donated to us. That being said, we've been working with a skeleton crew of students because of school sports, so we haven't had time to really test or iterate at all. Either way, we're definitely looking forward to the Ruckus.

1310, 1241, 20 and 1507 are the teams that pop out to me with a floor pick-up. Of them, 1310 is probably the most deadly.

1126 also has a floor pick-up, which was largely non-functional at FLR/Buckeye. Given the time they've had to iterate, we'll see what they bring to the table in 3 days.

Let's make it a date for next year!

Sounds good to me!

Let's see...

54 Auto
60+ Teleop
70 Climb
30 Dump
------------
214+ points

Every time. No sweat. :p

1 cycler + 2 climber/dumper alliances are best!

Honestly, I'd love to see that at Ruckus just to see how it would play out against the boring and mundane cycler and FCS alliances we always see zzzzzzzzzz.

Too bad we didn't get a chance to play together at IRI. Climber and dumping certainly is more exciting - particularly when we fall off after dumping or when someone is dragging their battery by its cable and can still climb.

This weekend in Rochester should be great.

You wouldn't have wanted to play with us at IRI. We were busy plowing other robots around the field. Well actually, you'd have fit right in with that great schedule we got, so with another great partner, maybe you would have liked it while we played D.

The offensive side of the bot kinda "found itself" after that event.

For all I know 340 built a whole other robot since Finger Lakes, but if they still do the climb and dump thing too, it would have been great to see in action.

We had a similar cycler + 2 climber alliance at CORI, and it was kinda cool to watch. Different. Just nowhere near as offensively capable as the Ruckus alliance I mentioned.

Cycling is highly dependent on driver ability. I would be very interested to see how effective the cyclers are if they are lacking their usual drive team due to graduation/other commitments/whatever. An FCS is a limited position but requires very low driver skill once it makes it to the feeder station. I would say look out for 3173 due to the simplicity of the strategy and design. That being said though, I'm sure that the teams that excelled this year (1310, 20, 610, 1241, 191, really a ton of this competition) will still find ways to succeed and probably have had meetings for their new drivers to practice already.

I can't wait to watch!

Hi, I'm a senior in High School and Co-Captain on Team 20, and for my Principles of Engineering course, I need to interview someone who works in an engineering/technical profession. I haven't had much luck finding an interviewee up to this point (I can not have known them prior to the interview), so I though, what better place to find such a person than a FIRST competition! Will there be anyone at Ruckus this weekend with enough interest, and most importantly, the spare time between pitwork to sit down for about 20 minutes and answer some questions for me? Thanks!

By the way, sorry to interrupt this thread, but it seems like the best place for it.

Edit: I've gotten a few responses already. I should be good to go. Thanks a lot guys, I really appreciate it! See you all tomorrow, good luck!

From my vantage point I can't see the rankings.

610, 4039, 1334, 3173, and 191 are all strong.

Many teams were missing low early on, possibly the field was set up with the pyramids slightly too close too the walls.

Many teams are much weaker than I expected them to be.

1241 is missing their floor pickup.

4001 has an almost entirely new robot

340, 1559, and 1334 have pulled off 30 point climbs

1334 had the only successful 50 point climb so far.

Many teams are working new drive teams.

4343 was having shooter issues with shooting low. Have now been corrected. We're also trying different drive teams each match. All of our 2013 on-season drive team graduated.

1310 is also having some issues with shooting low, though they're getting better.

That #1 seed is STRONG!

They were lucky to grab 1511 as their last pick. We chose them at another off-season competition (Where's Wolcott). We were the 7th seed captain and we chose them as our last pick. They sometimes are forgotten about but I can truly say the 50 point climb they put up almost every match was essential to us becoming finalists (against the 1st seed).

I would bet money the 1st seed will win (unless something goes wrong)

Congrats to the victors, 4039, 1334, and 3951.

1334- You guys are incredible. 'Nuff said.
And 3951- I had no idea who you were, but you completely shut down 3173 in our semis, and that's not easy to do. Congrats on your win, you deserved it.

And to the finalists-
191- You guys were a surprise to seed 1st- but you were consistent all day, and the only robot to go 6-0 in quals. Nice job.
610- You guys are phenomenal. I already knew that, but strategizing with you in our qual match together was awesome. I thought for sure you guys had this comp in the bag.
1511- We were reeeeeally close to picking you over 578, and if you were a little shorter, we likely would have. But we didn't want our fullback blocking our FCS, sooooo.... I think it turned out pretty well for you guys, though!

Fantastic job to everyone, and what a fun competition that was.
And I apologize to all for being THAT alliance captain that picks a team that was already picked. I felt rather bad after that. :D

Anyone got any videos?
Yes. I got some behind-the-glass videos during quals, and videos of Team 20's elim matches. I am uploading them to youtube as we speak.

MakeShift would like to thank the organizers and volunteers of Ruckus '13 for a putting on a great event. From the warm welcome to the spooky atmosphere, the whole thing was well-organized and fun. For any teams considering traveling to Ruckus next year, we highly recommend it!

It was an honour to play in the finals against the X-Cats (191), the Coyotes (610) , and Rolling Thunder (1511).

Thanks to the Red Devils (1334) and the Suits (3951) for being amazing alliance partners.

Congrats to the winners and to the finalists, I knew our alliance would need some help if we had any chance of beating you. You guys rock!
Thanks to all of the volunteers and the planning group. The armory worked out really well.
I would like to congratulate Dante for volunteer of the year. I may give you a hard time sometimes but it is all in fun. Rochester is really lucky to have you around for all of us. The RCR stuff you do behind the scenes, time you put in volunteering, and you really are one of the best referees in FIRST. Thank you for all you do.
My last thanks and congrats goes out to the volunteers from 1511 and 340 that helped run the event and the Mega-drive. You made this much more than just an awesome robotics event. Thanks.

Kim, I think the vision you had for the Ruckus almost 10 years ago has finally been fully recognized. Thank you. NEFIRST is lucky to have you.

Kim, I think the vision you had for the Ruckus almost 10 years ago has finally been fully recognized. Thank you. NEFIRST is lucky to have you.

Ehh the vision was realized the day we pulled together the first one - many of the teams in Rochester working together and coming together for a fun event where we could all learn and grow... we had it long ago :) The extravaganza that it has become is just way above and beyond what I ever would have dreamed!!!

Rochester was such an amazing place to start my career, and to really get my feet on the ground as a mentor in FIRST. All of the teams are so helpful and friendly, as much as I love New England, I will always miss the family that the Rochester FIRST community provided. They are the epitome of GP like no other area I've seen. That they are now able to draw in and host teams from so many different places is just a testament to the amount of hard work and effort that the students and mentors in the region put in year round.

I'm looking forward to my time back in New England and all the craziness it will bring, but I will always try and return to Rochester!! I'm really sad to miss my first Rally in 10 years this year, but I'll hopefully be watching the webcast from where-ever I am that day and if all goes well, will see everyone at FLR!!

Since Ruckus started nearly 10 years ago, the growth of the event has been awesome to see. This year was one of the best yet. A huge thanks to the planning committee and every volunteer at the event that made it feel like a regional.

To the Canadian contingent and especially our defending world champs 610 and 1241, I'm so glad you made the trip down and I hope you felt it was worth your time. The quality of teams in Canada is incredible and your presence at the event made everyone else strive to elevate their play.

To all other non-local teams that made the trip, I hope you enjoyed the event and will consider returning next year. Spread the word, bring your friends, Ruckus is a blast and the more the merrier.

Congratulations to the 2013 Ruckus Champs and Finalists, you both played great and it's a testament to good design and team organization that you can keep these machines running at such a high level 9 months after they were built and all of the matches in between.

Rochester FIRST is an incredible community and any event in the area that gets everyone together is awesome. I love chatting with everyone, most of whom I haven't seen since Buckeye or Champs to discuss how they felt their season went and what they are doing to prep for 2014.

A special thanks to our alliance partners 3015 and 4001. 4001, we really enjoyed playing with you guys. Your team was very friendly and your robot was awesome. 3015, we are finding ourselves on the same side of the glass in elims more often than not recently and it's always fun. You guys bring a ton of energy as well as great machines. We've won and event and were finalists in another with you guys recently and though we didn't quite replicate that success this time, we definitely had fun.

Thanks again to everyone involved, myself and the rest of Team 340 had a great time and I wish you all the best of luck in 2014!

A huge congratulations to 4039, 1334 and 3951 for their win at Rah Cha Cha!

That alliance put up a score of 198 in one of their matches, and I don't think too many of us could compete with that. Even for our alliance, everything would have had to go perfectly for all 3 robots to come close.

The final alliances matched up in a very interesting way. 4039 vs 610 on cycling + 10 pt climbing. 1334 vs 1511 on the 50pt dump. We felt we had the advantage with 191's cycles offsetting the cycles that 1334 made before climbing. 3951 played very solid defense, as did 1511 prior to their climb and dump.

Speaking from 610's perspective, we needed to match 4039's cycling output every match in order to win. We bet on 191's cycles putting us over the top, even if 1511 couldn't complete the full 50pt dump.

But we couldn't keep up with 4039 in the finals. They outscored us badly in both matches.

I think the win solidified 4039 as one of the best cyclers in the world. They were super quick, accurate and reliable all competition long. I was more surprised they didn't take the #1 seed than others were surprised that we didn't earn it.

I wanted to thank 191 and 1511 for being amazing alliance partners. Sorry our robot didn't quite hold it together for the finals rounds, but we did the best we could, and it was quite the run nonetheless! We learned a lot, and our new drive team made huge strides in practising their new roles.

Overall, the event was excellent! Great venue, setup, volunteers, and competition. What more could you ask for? It should be no surprise why 8 Canadian teams made the trip to Rah Cha Cha even on our Thanksgiving weekend.

Thanks to all who made this event possible!

I want to take a second and say thank you to everyone involved in the Rah Cha Cha Ruckus this year!

It was my first time MCing an event and although I was nervous, I had a lot of fun! It was great to see so many familiar faces and many new faces too. It felt great to be back and I had a blast.

Thanks again for having me and I hope everyone had a great time. :)
