Ed should have Falcon's. I'll send that one over right away.
FF PSA:
The Lunatechs have not participated in any drafts and if they do not participate in tonight's draft will receive a warning PM from the commissioner (me).
Did they show up?
I move that the Sour Patch Nerds get a 10-point penalty at the Waterford District--with one team member FROM there, they should have known it was potentially coming up and SAID something! :p (OK, I'll stick to making one of them run it.)
Anyways, Waterford District (FiM) is a Week 5 event, newly added to the FRC list (for this year...). It'll join Great Lakes Bay Region (Midland) at the end of the schedule, in one of the three open spots.
I really hope MI is done adding districts for this year, because we're running out of places to put them--one spot left before we hit Kickoff!
Well they didn't really ADD Waterford this year, I've been going there for 3 years now :P. Technically speaking, both members of Sour Patch Nerds live within 5 minutes of the Waterford Competition so it really should be 20 points...
The Lunatecs have missed five (actually six) drafts in a row and will be receiving a warning PM from me. If they do not participate in tomorrow's drafts they will be booted from the league.

Not sure who's doing Auburn, but I sent our lists to Ed and James for both drafts.

For everyone making lists remember this is Auburn MOUNTAINVIEW a separate event from just Auburn. Please check your lists accordingly, I can't do the draft tonight so who ever does make sure you get your team list from the correct event as well.

Thanks for catching this, I'll send you, Eric, and Ed an updated list. Please forward to the draft runner.
So is anybody going to do Auburn Mountainview?
So is anybody going to do Auburn Mountainview?
I can't. Gotta leave in under an hour.
It's 7:00 now. I guess we gotta move it to one of those four open spots in January...
It's 7:00 now. I guess we gotta move it to one of those four open spots in January...
At this point, we have no more open spots in January (if Auburn Mountainview goes there). Any event adds, we're goin' to have to do after Kickoff, or do a 3-a-day draft session to make up a draft.
It's 7:00 now. I guess we gotta move it to one of those four open spots in January...
We need more people to step up or the league is gonna fail.
The Lunatecs have failed to show up for tonight's draft after receiving a warning PM and thus are now booted from the league. Their previous picks are now on the waiver wire.
I will not be available to run tomorrow night's draft.

I think Eric is planning on taking your place tomorrow, Ed.
Also, If Brandon takes Mt. Olive, I can take Auburn Mountainview tomorrow.

Normally I would try to wait until I had at least a year of FF experience before I tried to run a draft, but seeing that you guys are pretty desperate...
I just need someone to give me a briefing on the details of how to do it.

I was planning on personally picking in Mt Olive for my team, so I'd feel more comfortable running whatever it was Ed was supposed to run. If Eric wants to switch, I'll gladly run one as long as someone sends me info. (Mainly - the link for the randomization website and howintheworld are the number of tiers decided)

I am also free tomorrow night, sorry new team meets on Tuesdays so little hectic.
I'll swap with Brandon--Mt. Olive should be up shortly. Note: It'll be on a 10 minute delay from any other drafts. Just my schedule.
Brandon--nothin' stopping the draft runner from making his/her own team's picks in his/her own tier. Just sayin'.
Akash, Pault: I'll drop you guys the rundown when I get a chance, probably Thursday--I've got a document somewheres. Brandon, any randomizer would work, but I think Ed put a link somewhere in this thread; I find that # of tiers is best done as #teams/#players>3, 1 tier; otherwise try 2*#teams/#players (2 tiers), and if that fails, just keep going up until X*#teams/#players>3, and let X be the number of tiers you need.

Doing 3 in one night won't be too bad because it seems like most teams are sending in lists
What's the advantage of doing it live instead of sending in a list?
Is it to avoid making a list? (That's half the fun.)
Are people looking at other tiers for an idea of who to pick?
Is there a concern that the moderator will misread a list?
Is it the opportunity for social chatter by following it live?
We are not forming actual alliances that have to play together, so who you get in an early round has little/no bearing on who you draft later on IMO. A list is simply a ranking of which teams you feel will garner the most points under the following criteria.
Win, 2 points
Tie, 1 point
Loss, 0 points [Note: this may also be -2 points. Scorer’s discretion.]
Winner, 30 points
Finalist, 20 points
Semifinalist, 10 points
Quarterfinalist, 4 points
1st seed, 20 points
2nd-3rd seed, 12 points
4th-8th seed, 6 points
9th-12th seed, 3 points
13th-16th seed, 2 points
Woodie Flowers Finalist Award, 8 points
Regional Chairman’s Award, 42 points
Engineering Inspiration, 36 points
Rookie All-Star, 20 points
Rookie Inspiration, 15 points
Coopertition Award, 10 points (if in play)
Highest Rookie Seed, 5 points
High score, 5 points
Judges Award, 5 points
Robot-based award (Delphi, Xerox, GM, Rockwell, Motorola), 15 points
Dean’s List, 4 points
Any award not previously mentioned, 2 points

There are several reasons why I normally don't send in a list.
1. Good excuse to procrastinate from homework.
2. I enjoy following the draft more closely and and checking at the end.
3. I use my list more of as a guide. Shortly before my pick, I look on TBA for more information about a few teams that are ranked higher on my list to make sure that I am picking the right teams. (The team I pick is often not the next highest team on my list.)
Because Ed can't make it to the draft tonight, should I just give him randoms?

I've always preferred to make lists, but there's an argument to be made for drafting live. Thoroughly making a list requires comparing every team to every other team. When drafting live, it's about as effective to use a list based on some objective criteria (say, fantasy points scored per event the previous year) and comparing the top few teams on that list. This takes significantly less time without losing a large amount of effectiveness.
The four reasons you point out are also contributing factors.
Because Ed can't make it to the draft tonight, should I just give him randoms?
Ed generally takes randoms if he's not running the draft. Unless he says otherwise, of course.
I have lists from everybody except Peach Alliance, LTown Throwdown, Schrodinger's Cat, Prestige Taco, and the Sour Patch Nerds. If one or more of those teams could drop a list my way, that would be appreciated.

I'll be doing Taco's live
Aside from the announcements, I honestly prefer doing live over lists. I feel that was a large reason why my team last year was able to finish 2nd at the championship drafts.
The problem is, though, I'm in college. College does not equal to free time at exactly 7:00 pm... I see that a lot of participants here also have similar problems.

Always go with randoms.
I'd rather the customers get a shot at good teams instead of me.

A couple quick things.
Please make sure the teams in your list are attending the event. I had it 3 times tonight (and this isn't the first time it has happened) that people request teams not attending the event. It helps the draft runners out alot if they don't have to worry about making sure your picks are attending the event.
It also helps that when you send in a list, it is vertically and not horizontally.
Thanks.

I had one list where one out of the five teams listed were attending. That is no help to me at all. You might as well just send a list that says random instead.

We finally got around to deciding our 5th member.
Thanks again for allowing another player, Ed!
EricDrost let our team know he won't be able to fully participate this season, so we decided to bring in Connor Worley as our 5th member for Flippin The Greatest.

Looks like I was just a little faster than I counted on. Just uploaded the document I've got to CD-Media.

I will note that I'm actively working on another version of the drafting program, this one based in Excel and its macro codes. So far, though, I really only have the randomization functions (players and teams) working; teamlist pulling is available but I don't know how to get it fully functional (AKA automatic given an event code); and I'm working on splitting tiers up based on # of teams and # of players (the code isn't really crashing yet, but I still actually have to do the split). Means I have a bit of a todo list--if you think you know more Excel VBA than I do, I might be needing some help before long. (I do have some loose algorithms; let's just say I used similar ones on the C++ version about 3-4 years ago.)

Adding a datasource in Excel with VBA is a little tricky. I've been trying to do it for a while, but I haven't had time to get deep into it. I know it has something to do with creating a Connection and adding it to the QueryTable.

I will note that I'm actively working on another version of the drafting program, this one based in Excel and its macro codes.
Just to put an update in on this: I'm at a point where I'm seriously thinking about releasing the setup portion this weekend. There's a few things that will affect that, one of which is that I want to run a live "alpha-beta" test before releasing that section, and the other is that I would be rigging a couple of buttons for faster use before the test, probably during tonight's coding session. Automatic team list pulling may be a little out of the question, unless someone knows more VBA than both myself (very little, but enough to function) and ttldomination (more than me).
After verifying the operation of the setup portion, I'd then proceed to a couple of key functions for the drafting portion, namely checking picks for matchup with the team list and checking picks for double picks, then go on to list and random picks. In a perfect world, I'd be done in a week or so... but this ain't a perfect world, so make it two and hope to be surprised.
Oh, and along those lines: Dibs on running San Diego tomorrow night.
Edit: Couple of minor changes and tomorrow's test, and scrubbing current data that's in there, and I should be golden to release--the button's working properly.

Can someone do San Diego?
I have some errands to run with friends on the other side of town and may not make it back in time to do the draft.

Mind if I invoke close-distance and take SD instead of Groton?

If only San Diego had one more team.
If only San Diego had one more team.
I double-checked the setup program when I saw that--and figured that I'd rather have a 30-team margin than a 0-team margin. Should be some good pickings even at the bottom end.
The algorithm I use is, in essence: If (# of teams)/3 > (# of players)/(# of tiers), then that is the number of tiers I will use. BUT, I should note that the the division is rounded to the nearest whole number, so it may give some odd readings from time to time. OTOH, it works pretty well
We still need someone to take Groton. (Whoever takes it, PM me--I have a list or two for ya.)
I'm still waiting on the following San Diego lists:
Team 3
Curiosity
Awesome Blossom
Peach Alliance
LTown Throwdown (up in SD Tier 2)
Schrodinger's Cat
Breakfast Company (I see Google Doc, I don't see San Diego list)
Phantom Zone
Prestige Taco (up in Tier 1)
Sour Patch Nerds
FYI, I may need to suspend San Diego mid-draft. Something's come up. If suspended, it'll be for about 3 hours, hopefully less.

Ya'll are lucky my girlfriend browses chief delphi and said she would be willing to see the movie later, I will handle Groton. But we seriously do need other people to step up especially after Thanksgiving when I will be working nights

Yep, suspended. Still waiting on lists from Awesome Blossom and Prestige Taco. If you've got live picks to make and all slots ahead of you are full, make 'em; otherwise, the list folks have priority when I get back.

Just made our first pick live. Working out the rest of our list. Plans kinda fell through...
(Team Awesome Blossom)
San Diego, both tiers, is live once again. Gimme a couple minutes to get caught up, then we'll roll. If you're live-drafting, and I see a team member on Chief, I'll shoot a PM once I hit your spot--you'll have 5 minutes to get a response in before you get random.
My apologies for having to suspend the San Diego draft tonight, and thanks for your patience with getting the draft going again.
As some consolation, the setup portion of the draft-running program is now uploaded to CD-Media. Be sure to enable your macros and load your lists--and I expect you guys to try and break it a bit.

First instance of a break--Mars_James found a bug, and anybody else who downloaded it probably needs to go get the new version that was just uploaded to the same place. Unless you like having a lot of extra tiers floating around, that is. ::ouch::

My VBA skills are very limited at best, but you can set up macros to run whenever certain cells are changed, so you can use that to change the format of a cell from time to integer (and to trigger rebuilding the remaining teams list).

You got more knowledge on that than I do--I didn't know you could set 'em up to run on a change. I'll have to set up a format-change macro next (I'm actually planning on setting up a clear function to empty out a draft, but changing format ought to be pretty simple).
BTW, if anybody does decide to look at the macros--be advised, they're kind of a mess, though I *think* I left enough comments to follow what I was doing. When I've got it fully functional, I'll have to go in and try to clean up a little.

I see no change, and Great Lakes is full at 30 so it should go on the schedule now. And waterford is at 13 slots out of 20 so it should go on as well (though if it doesn't grow we will need 5 tiers)

I would just like to remind teams to send their Michigan pick lists to me, not Ed. The workload on running a draft is tremendous already, without Ed having to worry about forwarding lists.
TL;DR : If you send a Michigan pick list to Ed, do not assume I'll get it.

I say that we go through with it, and then maybe later we decide to have a redraft. It might be a disaster, but the draft schedule isn't very flexible.

Possible. Ed does randoms; Taco, Nerds, and Throwdown tend to do live drafts anyways. That leaves 3; at least two like to have someone monitoring the drafts.
Updating the schedule, and adding the two new MI districts on tentative dates.
I'm guessing the next three draft days are going to be a little thin on draft runners due to travel and all that. Focusing on 11/29-12/1, who is available and willing to run drafts?
I'm available all three, but would prefer to focus on any thin spots, as well as working on the drafting program in spare time (separate update on that at another time, I think).

My very deepest apologies, my power was knocked out for the majority of the day unexpectedly. I Facebooked Ed through a friends phone but because of travel he didn't forward the message.
In compensation I'll run Oregon City, Glacier Peak, and WPI.

I sent my November Draft lists to Koko Ed, does anyone need a copy to be sent to them? [Especially for Kettering??]
You need to update it and you need to make sure the teams on the list are actually at that event.

Update on drafting program, for those interested:
I've gotten a number of picking functions to the point where they won't crash the compiler--but haven't tested them yet for a couple of reasons. We're looking at:
--Random team selection
--List selection
--Checking function for the draft (Is the team in question picked already?)
Now, I haven't tested any of these yet because they aren't fully ready--there's still a couple of things I need to do like locate the appropriate cell to change, rerunning the macros if the checker throws a fit, and I still need to remove the team from the available teams list. Then comes the easy part of rigging buttons and putting all the appropriate macros in the appropriate sheets. Sounds fun, huh? I still haven't worked out the formats to my liking, either.
If someone wants to help out on a specific part of the program, I'd be happy to send them the appropriate macro(s) to supplement the setup version that's already out.

Hey guys sorry for the Orlando issues, flying across country after a 4 hour delay put me home now. I apologize for any and all inconveniences and will make sure to not take a draft on a hectic day like this again. All times are now good till the same time tomorrow (hopefully we can get it done before that) I will be updating the draft with what I can right now
The following either didn't draft live or have not sent in a list:

If TeamRUSH27 doesn't have their list filled out, and hasn't replied with a live pick, why can't we just skip them to finish up the Orlando draft? It is their problem, not the draft runner's at that point.

This one's for all ya schedulers:
MI Escanaba only has 18 teams, and is drafting tomorrow. Did we want to switch it with Troy (28) or Bay Region (30), or some other event later in the drafting season, to allow for filling? (MI Bedford and MI Waterford are in the same situation, BTW--but they're drafting late in the season as it is.)

Traverse City has 37 teams registered, so it might be better to switch Escanaba with Traverse City.
Traverse City has 37 teams registered, so it might be better to switch Escanaba with Traverse City.
St. Joseph's maximum capacity has already been reached, and its registration has been closed. Its 2 days later then Traverse City, giving Escanaba a couple more days to fill up. It's in the Upper Peninsula, we all know its needs the time :P
Don't make me change all the St. Joseph stuff to Traverse city ;)

Sorry, college happened. We'll be back on track tomorrow.
Also, unrelated suggestion: Since the locations of district events are getting kind of obscure, could draft runners indicate the region each event is part of in the draft thread titles? Example: [FF]: 2014 Howell[MI] Tier 1. The other tags could be [MAR], [NE] and [PNW].

Hey... I just realized we have a problem... After downloading Eric's excel doc, the when you load the lists and such the exact same draft order is made every single time... I thought I would investigate due to over 25% of our drafts, us having a first pick. (Though not everyone uses Eric's doc) The doc works perfectly otherwise though...
Drafts affected are:

How shall we fix this? Just use the old way of randomising for now... but it doesn't seem particularly fair that we (Breakfast Company) are continually getting first picks like that, while RUSH always gets last picks :/ Though it's good that this was caught early.

The random function works, it's just that the first time you press generate right after downloading the doc, it always comes out with the same random list.
LTownThrowdown has missed the last three draft.
If they manage to miss tomorrow night's draft they will receive a warning PM from the commissioner (me).
Got LTown Throwdown's list so that crisis is adverted but I now have two other team (both who are leading both of my drafts) who if they do not participate tonight will be sailing into dangerous waters.

He's gonna need a talking to really soon as well as the boys on Team Awesome Blossom.
I'll check on that. It should give a different order every time. Unless... I'll check that too. (I think I know what's goin' down.)
Awright, I ran some testing. And I have a solution (the problem wasn't quite what I thought). But first, the testing method:
I ran the generator 10 times without closing Excel or clearing data. 7 different players got first pick, possibly 8. The first two were Breakfast Company.
Then I ran the generator 10 times, clearing the draft between runs. (Actually 11 times, but I think I forgot to clear once.) 8 different players got 1st pick.
Then I closed and opened Excel to generate drafts. I was going to do 10, but after 5, the pattern was clear. Breakfast Company, BTW.
Then I tried clearing the draft before closing. Didn't help.
But, there is a simple fix. I've used it before when manually generating drafts on occasion (Ed, if you remember a couple years back when Hallry kept getting 1st picks... I did use this once or twice... and I've used it against myself, too).
If you use my spreadsheet to generate drafts, you need to generate the draft 2-3 times--or roll a die and generate that many times. I think Excel's starting random number is 14, which happens to be Breakfast Company's position in the list. Guess what, they get a lot of 1st picks.
I will be thinking of a fix over the weekend, maybe sooner. It'll probably involve tripping the random number generator some random number of times before starting to use its numbers. I'll announce when it's fixed and published. I'll probably do a little bit of development--I found something by accident that could make my life MUCH simpler, and should be a quick add (famous last words, right, programmers? :yikes: ) before the release, maybe make life a little easier.

Ed, I'm sorry for missing the draft today; I planned on live picking as normal and I ran into some major RL issues that had to be addressed. Won't happen again. Same goes to BrennanB.
Yea, I'm also sorry for missing the drafts. My team had a meeting that went late tonight, and I just never got a chance to create lists. Unfortunately this might happen again next week (I will try to at least let the draft runners know I'm getting randoms), but after that I shouldn't have much trouble.
If you guys can't make it just send a list. Even if it's a small one or just says give me randoms.

I meant to pop in a tell you both to just give me Randoms but I had to leave unexpectedly with no notice, my Grandma ended up in the hospital for lung cancer surgery and my mother gets pretty mad when I say "Hang on a minute, let me tell them I'm leaving".

So Clifton is at 30/35 teams we can do the draft and hope it gets fuller and not smaller with two tiers, or we draft it as 3 tiers and the number is not a problem or we can swap it with Lenape-Seneca which is full with 40 teams

I think it'd probably be best to swap it with Lenape; I'm sure Clifton will fill up as it'll probably end up be a 3rd district for some teams.

So is today going to be Clifton or Lenape? All of this schedule changing is starting to get confusing.
Can we just do a complete schedule change at this point? Shove all of the events that are not full down and bring up the ones that are full instead. It'll make it easier than all of this last-second changes.

How shall we fix this? Just use the old way of randomising for now... but it doesn't seem particularly fair that we (Breakfast Company) are continually getting first picks like that, while RUSH always gets last picks :/ Though it's good that this was caught early.
Don't worry about it.
It's not that many drafts and there's nothing we can do about it now.
I'll second what Koko Ed said about the drafts being messed up. It happens, and I can't speak for others, but no one on our team blames you for it.
Besides, we like our teams we picked from our position (despite being 7th). We honestly would not prefer doing a redraft....

I will be thinking of a fix over the weekend, maybe sooner. It'll probably involve tripping the random number generator some random number of times before starting to use its numbers. I'll announce when it's fixed and published. Yep, famous last words. The code's in there, but currently non-functional for some reason.
So, here's the situation. The paper (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/2881) has been uploaded as Version 1.2, with the random list issue fixed. (I haven't removed the previous version (1.1) yet, BTW.)
I tried to get an off-the-help-site check against double values in a range working--it isn't, but the code is in the tier tabs if anybody wants to help troubleshoot. I'd also like to get a format change from time to general going under the same trigger conditions, but that may have to wait. If that were working, I think double picks would be eliminated whenever someone ran drafts from this program. Problem is, it isn't working.
There are also some picking functions buried in the main macro code module that I haven't gotten working yet. Eventually, they'll move to the tier tabs (or each tier tab will get a reference), but for now they're out in the main area. Again, if folks want to try to get those working, I'd appreciate the help.

Also thanks for getting that new version out so quick, I really like how easy it was.

I am assuming all the new teams will be waiver cycled next week and not tomorrow since we need to give Eric some time because this is very late in the season to lose 2, potentially by tomorrow night 4, teams.

Actually, it's because there's a minimum 48-hour time on waiver--but close enough. I'll get on that tomorrow.
Oh, and I'll probably be live drafting tomorrow.
I jumbled around the districts again placing the least filled at the bottom hoping to give them enough time to fill up a little more.

Oops Draft Runner typed it in wrong -.-'
The waiver list has been published in the waiver thread. With the quality and quantity of teams available, I'm expecting a major claim war, to say the least. Probably going to trump a few from last year.
So, I'm going to make a slight change to the waiver procedure. Officially, y'all have until Sunday (when I start cycling) to make your claims. BUT! If the first team on the priority list makes a claim, I'll cycle their first claim ASAP and update until I hit a team that doesn't have a claim. (BTW, that's currently Fighting Calculators.)
The other thing that's going to be a bit different is that I am not updating the individual threads. There's just too many of them--the booted teams were almost never in the same tier. I'll update them when I cycle teams, if a claim is made, or over the following week if no claim is made in that tier.

I am doing two tiers for the 41 teams currently at Montreal right now, so each team will have about 4.5, enough for 3-team alliances.

The Virginia Regional is scheduled to be drafted Thursday night. Thing is... I'm pretty sure that up to 7 slots for a reason for other haven't been filled by teams on the waitlist. I also know that would likely include some veteran teams that have won the event within the last couple of years, so you might want to flip with a knowingly full event to make sure the draft is good for Virginia (also if it populates as it should I'd be comfortable with running that draft myself as a non-tiered event). Maybe delay it a week by flipping it with Oklahoma?

I'm using an old FF Draft Assistant program. If I restart it now then the pick order will be different as well the random teams list.

There's a way to avoid that--make the deletion in the tier files (.txt, located in the same place as the program), then close Draft Assistant, open Draft Assistant, and OPEN Tier 1 (which will bring along Tier 2 and the random list for the ride).

How does one generate randoms of a draft?
Edit: in the event I wanted to run one next season
How does one generate randoms of a draft?
There's a couple ways, I use This Site (http://www.random.org/lists/).
You can also use EricH's draft running program, although it still has a few bugs.

Just as a reminder to draft runners to avoid confusion, please send Ed your no shows and if everyone did show up let him know that as well
Team Awesome Blossom has missed the part four drafts. If they miss tonight's draft they will receive a warning PM.

Can someone else handle Shorewood tonight?
Gonna be perfectly honest I would but, I am currently at my local theater watching all 3 LOtR movies and The Hobbit before watching Desolation of Smaug
I can't do Shorewood today, but I can run it if it is moved to tomorrow.
Yes, I do realize there would be 3 different drafts at once.

I mean, what says "Family Game Night" like a live draft with so much suspense that it's like watching a Heat vs. Spurs Game 7 rematch? :D
I'm available to run, setting up for a 7:30 start pending a "go" signal. (If given, will post immediately.)

Go signal fro whom? If from me you got it!

Thanks Eric! Tonight is just a busy day for me with both schoolwork and our W.A.F.F.L.E.S. local FLL Regional running in two days, there is much to be done before then.
Heat vs. Spurs Game 7 rematch? :D
Wait, tonight? Oh boy!
EDIT: Check schedule before saying anything next time....:o
