Wait, tonight? Oh boy!

It was just a comparison.......but January 26th @ 1 PM, if you're wondering.

December 12 Virginia, Shorewood
December 13 Hawaii, Seneca
December 14 Greater Pittsburgh, Northeastern
December 15 FLR, Long Island
December 16 Washington DC, Livona
December 17 North Bay, Traverse City
December 18 North Star, 10000 Lakes
December 19 Peachtree, Great Lakes Bay Region

I can't seem to find a regional that fits the name or location of "Washington DC" am I just missing something? Or did the name change?

Will keep that in mind. Thanks.

It's more like Game 6 more than Game 7.

Negatory on this, I won't be back until after 8pm, we had a very long delay where the snowstorm knocked out power.

What do you need help with exactly?

Nothing specific, haha. Just in case I run into something. Also the question of whether or not to split it into tiers

Use the updated FF draft assistant (I still hit random about 3 times just to be safe) and then make sure you use everyones list. BTW who is running drafts and does not have sparks list link?

Steven Donow
14-12-2013, 17:48
Okay, I'll be doing Pittsburgh then. So far I only have lists from Team Spark and Curiosity

Is anyone doing Livonia?

It's getting very close to 7:30, so I am going to assume no.

Since we're getting backed up here on drafts, I can volunteer to do this one tomorrow. I can't do tonight, as I am busy currently.

The draft will start at 7:00 EST as always, although be open to the possibility I may push it back to 7:30.

Scoring question: New award listed for 3D printing.

This is a Championship-only award, and applies to robot parts. I guess the question is: Is this a robot-based award (25 points) or a "not previously mentioned" (10 points), or in a class by itself (and thus anywhere between 10 and 25 points)?

My thought is that it should either be robot-based or in a class by itself, particularly since it's a submission-required award. Based on that, I'd probably go 15-20 points if that option is picked (similar to WFA and Dean's List).

What was done with the media award last year? That's also a "submission-required, championship only" award?

IIRC, "not previously mentioned", AKA 10 points.

On the other hand, the 3D Printing Award happens to require the submission of a robot part, which would tend to point it more towards the "robot-based award" category, AKA 25 points.

Which... is why I figured I'd bring it up now, so we can hash this discussion out now and not have to have the debate during the Championship.

Like I said, I'd go for putting it in between 10 and 25, probably 15 or 20, because it both is and isn't robot-based (40% of the award is based on outreach and mentoring, both received and given, while 60% is the part itself and design stuff with it).

I am more worried about the part in the section where it states that one adult and one student member will be flown out to accept the award, implying that it may be announced prior to when we do our draft

Not an issue, if you read instead of skimming. Full relevant text quoted below.

The 3DPA Team winner will be announced at the FIRST Championship and presented with an award sponsored by America Makes and ORNL.

America Makes and ORNL will provide transportation and hotel cost for one team representative and a chaperone to receive the award at the Championship Event (if the team is not already attending the Championship).

What I see there is this: The announcement will be at CMP. (This is backed up in another section.) It is possible that the team representatives (and thus their team) will know, but be under a strict NDA. It's also possible that the sponsors are funding travel for all teams that apply, but that's a lot less likely.

I'd say that it's going to be announced at CMP, but it's possible that a team not at CMP wins--in that case, all points go the way of an unused Wild Card slot.

Seriously, we need to figure out a better way of tracking what drafts need covering and who is available to do them--and getting lists to draft runners. I'll start a discussion after all regular-season drafts are complete (if Ed doesn't beat me to the punch).

I've lurked in on the Fantasy First community for a couple of years, and for the first time this year am helping a friend run a team. I absolutely appreciate the work you put into this. I've become familar with the accolades of a lot more teams through this process.

It is exciting to see how many events FIRST has grown into. Consequently it has made the drafting process a grueling test of endurance. Much more than I anticipated. I could deffinitely see having separate leagues for each district and another for all the remaining regional events. Perhaps appoint a different comissioner for each if there were that many dedicated people with the time to help.

As a father with a young family the build season is already a strain. My wife would have my head if I tried to monitor a live draft on Chielf Delphi. If we went to a list only draft that I could sort through at the end of my work day, or after the kids go to bed I could help out there. The viability of the live draft seems about dead anyway seeing as drafts are being run at non-regulation times without any warning.

One suggestion would be to require everyone who participates in Fantasy FIRST to run a draft, and then schedule it with that many participants.

One minor thing. Some folks have thought that doing a Fantasy FIRST website may be the way to go. I'm thinking that they might be right, particularly if some things are automatic. I can't code a website, mind you, but I'm willing to work with anybody developing one--I know a lot of what needs to happen inside the programming, but not a lot of the syntax needed. (Inside or outside the current FF community, I can help--I think.)

An automated system such as a website is definitely the way to go, as participation increases and the amount of drafts we have to do goes up as well. Perhaps we can task someone with coming up with a prototype by the end of this season?

I'm going to assume that you mean after scoring all the events, because it's not clear what you mean by end of this season.

I have no experience whatsoever in programming a website, so I have to bow out of this one. If there's any kind of non-programming task I can help, then I can definitely do something there.

With the growing number of drafts and lists to be made (particularly with more district systems), I don't think it's feasible to continue like this, support or not. I honestly think the only way for this to work with a reasonable time commitment is to radically change the format to a traditional fantasy league wherein players have season-long rosters and choose to start particular teams each week. I'd provide tools such as a spreadsheet of which teams play which weeks, etc. Draft would take forever, but would probably save time in the long run. I was planning on officially proposing this next year, but since the topic came up...

I agree with the fact that we can't continue with this format. More likely than not we will 6-7 districts next year and full districts in a short amount of time, and that's simply too many drafts. My idea for change is to draft once for each district and have everyone take as many teams as possible(number of FRC teams in district/number of FF participants) and get points on their season within the district. Regionals can remain the way they are until the regional system is gone completely.

I'm on a FIRST binge right now, so I'm going through lists and putting down the biggest updates.

NOTE: I said biggest, so I'm fairly sure I missed quite a few teams already. I don't want to go back, so I only have the bigger teams in these events:

Center Line
Alamo
Southfield
Palmetto
Midwest
Nashua/Granite State
Inland Empire
Auburn Mountainview

If someone could check those over again for me, I would appreciate it a lot.

From Central Illinois on in the schedule, I'm just going to point out the teams added in our tier only. I'll put the actual list here later.

Koko Ed

This is probably the most likely scenario.

Here's how I propose to work this:
-the drafts would have sign up well into mid to late December.
- No more teams. You do not need a group of people to pick three or four teams.
-No more Tiers. Just one big draft.
-The drafts will happen the days leading up to kickoff. Either three or four days for each round.
Draft orders will still be randomized. There's no other way to do it.
-No more five minute standbys. Two minutes between each pick. You've had weeks leading up to the pick. If you can't make the draft it's on you.
- If you miss the whole draft you are Insta-booted. I'm done wasting time with people who cannot be bothered showing up. No randoms. Nothing. You get skipped and forgotten.
You can switch teams in and out up to week 1. You can trade teams up to week 1. On the Thursday of week 1 all rosters are locked.
Teams are scored on event average. Not total points. SO you have a team that does one event and runs the table then you basically get those points. If you have a team that does three or four events you get the average of those four event. So choose wisely!
Standings are based on points to see who gets to pick where for the Championship Draft.

I was thinking somewhere along the lines of a basketball roster really- 13-15 teams of your preference.

Could we run the regular drafts for regionals, and then have the traditional fantasy league for the district events? Like FiM FF, MAR FF, NeFIRST FF and PNW FF.

I was asked to look at something someone else came up with, but could not due to some format issue or other, or something like that. Once I get a chance to look at it, I'll probably start bouncing ideas around.

My thought is this: If the individual draft is used, with some automation (like a website), we'd almost have to go to a list-only, and spread any given draft out over a couple of days or so (but have the site run multiple at a time). The draft runners' job would be to activate and monitor any given draft.

@jay and Ed: I'd suggest that instead of picking 3-4 teams for the season, given that there are upwards of 2500 teams, everyone picks 5-10 (depending on league size), but can only play 3-4 in any given week. (Fewer is acceptable, more is not.) Or, as an alternative, do 7 drafts, 3 teams/player, 1 draft for each week of the season.

Or, how about this one. 1 draft for EACH district area (FiM, MAR, PNW, NE, future district areas), encompassing the entire regular season. That would alone knock out half of our drafts. Obviously it might be "better" to do more than one, but let's go with 1 for now. -50% of all FF drafts gives about 45, give or take a bit, which leads us to about where we were a couple years back, with 1-2 drafts a night, no more, starting after Thanksgiving. Regionals would still draft as normal.

It's what I suggested earlier, but I can get behind this also.

Although, I don't starting three teams is appropriate, Koko. Given that there's two districts happening every weekend, that would give us 48 teams in eliminations. Starting six teams sounds like a better thing to do. More opportunities to gain points and make everyone happy.

In other news, Sour Patch Nerds will be dropping jeremy callahan because he wouldn't cover any of the missed drafts for me, and he missed all the drafts he was supposed to do.

Team name change to: Sour Patch

I *should* be more available this week and next week for running drafts, with the exception of 12/24. But, I do have work, which keeps me out of the knowing until right before normal start time whether I'm needed or not.

For the rest of the season, can folks who are going to run drafts post the night before, if they know for sure?

I'll go ahead and take Clifton tomorrow, start time 7:30 EST, posting the draft after tonight's finish.

For next year maybe we can have a weekly draft every Wednesday night. Each participant picks a new team that they will go with each week (irregardless of if they are at a regional or a district) and will receive points for that one team. At the end of the season the points will be tallied up for their seven drafts and that will determine the picking order for the traditional Championship draft picking order to see who will be the champion.

I can run Sacramento tonight unless someone else was planning on running it.

Maybe we want to run the districts like that too Ed? Though I do like that the current system resembles the actual FRC alliance selection process.

Steven Donow
27-12-2013, 16:24
I like that new system, except maybe instead of one team have each player pick three teams(to keep similarities with real life FRC)? I guess that would really depend on how many FF players there are.

Didn't get run, which is probably a good thing because it has about 25 teams right now

EricH

So... we're running way behind. Bedford, Sacramento, and now Bayou all need someone to run them. I'm definitely not available tonight to run any draft, but I will be sending lists to Ed for all 3.

However, I am available tomorrow, or should be. If all goes as planned, I'll take one draft then, which one TBD based on what gets done tonight. Ditto for Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday--depending to some extent on what's needed. I'm hoping to avoid doing anything on Tuesday, but can take a short catchup draft then as well.

I'm still thinking that in future, we stick to 1 draft per district area, maybe 1/X district events in area, which will cut out about half our drafts and stop the schedule sliding around when a district doesn't fill quickly. (At 1 draft/district area, we'd have to adjust the scoring model, but I think that could be done fairly painlessly by simply taking the average FF score for all events, factoring in district rank, and rounding up to the nearest point.)

bam-bam
28-12-2013, 13:56
I'm so sorry for not taking a draft at this time, but I'm busy with applications at this point. Once I'm done I'll let you all know when I can take one.

Updating, and all that:
Looks like we're on track for finishing the regular season the night before Kickoff.

December 30 NYC, Southington
January 1 Lone Star, Mount Vernon
January 2 Western Canadian, Escanaba
January 3 Windsor Essex, Waterford
January 4 Las Vegas, Lansing

Upcoming:
MI Championship: TBD
MAR Championship: TBD
NE Championship: TBD
PNW Championship: TBD

Now those 4 TBDs will be sometime between the end of Week 6's events and the start of Week 7's events; if the past is any indication, on a Tuesday or Wednesday night. I don't think they'll all go on one night, but we might have to do it that way--either way, we'll definitely need draft runners for all 4, because there is absolutely no room for schedule slippage with those events.

Suggestion: Move one of each of the last two drafts to the 2nd and 3rd, having 3 drafts each those two nights - assuming we have available runners of course.

Couldn't we just run the remainder of the drafts over the course of week up to kickoff? It'll make it easier to get lists in and picks before kickoff starts. The drafts will still finish as accordingly to the schedule, but just starts earlier.

Just to let you know guys, near the beginning of the events, all the teams come off the waivers immediately and become free agents. First come, first grab.

EricH
24-02-2014, 19:54
Yep.

At this point, I'm figuring that there isn't exactly time to run a waiver before Week 1, so all teams are first-come, first serve. (Though... double-check waivers to make sure. I think we got 'em all, but sometimes one slips through.)

Also, now would be a GREAT time to check on all your Week 1 teams to see if they're still planning to show up (and get replacements!).

bam-bam
28-02-2014, 09:05
Just a small reminder and PSA to you all: check next week and see if you are missing any teams. MTP is valid up until each Monday now, and you can use it to claim any team that comes off waivers (AKA new teams!) so put it good use while you can!

I decided to check out our scores and I'm glad I did. I went through every score and it seems like there's an insane amount of errors. 8/18 scores are wrong on both scored drafts according to my calculations. Some aren't major, +/- 2 points, but some are missing upwards of +/- 10 points or more. You can check my calculations here:

It happens. Usually, we call those holes in the draft and grab the first random team to fill the hole--in order of the drafting, in case of multiple holes.

Find the match with the highest score at the event you're scoring. The 3 winners of that match(the ones who actually made the High Score) receive an additional 5 points added onto their score(I count it as awards points in my spreadsheets).

I'd say post them right in the thread and then send em over to James and I, one of us will check them.

Also, sorry I haven't been scoring either, I've been spending my time going through all the waivers and such as well as volunteering constantly, I should have some scores posted later today.

I scored/attached the Springside Chestnut Hill District using EricH's 2012 template for the MOE scout FF league. I don't know if someone else scored it or who is responsible for it, but I figured if I posted it here it might do some good. Please check it before using the scores. I haven't scored since 2012 so something may have changed w/o my knowledge. I also credited backup 3929 with a SF finish for their 1 loss in the SF. I'm not sure what the official scoring is for backups like that...

JosephC
28-03-2014, 00:53
I'm not sure what the official scoring is for backups like that...

This.

288 captained the winning alliance at Midland, but they were replaced after the first QF's match. Do they get points for winning, or just QF's? Also, does their replacement bot get points for winning?

EricH
28-03-2014, 00:59
For replacement robots: All members of the alliance are equal in terms of tourney points, wherever the alliance ends up. However, if I was scoring, this would not extend to W-L-T records--3929 would have a 10-point SF finish, but a 0-1-0 elims record for -2 points. 288 would get the 30 points for winning, but only the +- 2 for their first QF match; their replacement would get the 30 points for the win, plus their W-L-T (which would be something on the order of 5-X-0).

As a note, when I was scoring, I actually had to notice the backup team being placed in there to give 'em credit.

The Lucas
28-03-2014, 01:05
but a 0-1-0 elims record for -2 points.

Are there still negative points for losing? I didn't bother with the loss column. I thought we gave up negative points in '10 when winning and losing were kinda the same thing  (aka the year of 6v0)

Oregon State University District is PNW's week 6, so I assume they'll have more teams next week.

With 18 FF teams we'd need 54 teams to run a single draft. Works out perfectly. What day should I run it?

EDIT: I'm not sure how MAR works, but in FiM, if a team decides they aren't going to attend, the next team in the waitlist is immediately contacted, so we most likely wouldn't have an issue with a team dropping and only having 53 teams.

Shoutout to my Google Doc compadres; Brennan, Wolly, and bambam. We're all caught up on districts now.

Is northeastern done? It isn't on the google doc that was posted above.

Yes Sir, the google doc above is Brennan's pet project. It may/may not be updated to include all scored events at any given time.

Just looking at the spreadsheet... How is Pure Michigan ahead of Team 3? The point totals would suggest the opposite. I do thank all the scorers for all their hard work.

The actual file is in Excel I believe*(So Brennan can do cool stuff with it), with him just copying info over to google docs to be viewed. My guess is that he just forgot to switch them around(or mistyped the scores).

*note I'm not 100% sure on this, bad memory.

Since we need 4 drafts run by Thursday, this is the schedule.

MAR - April 6th, Sunday
PNW - April 7th, Monday
FIM - April 8th, Tuesday
NEFIRST - April 9th, Wednesday

And don't even tell me you didn't have enough warning to make a picklist by tomorrow for MAR, their championship team list has been up for a week now.

Of course, Eric and Ed can always overrule me and put two drafts on one day, but I'll be starting up the MAR thread shortly.

With PNW only having 40 teams registered, and FIM and NEFIRST not having enough teams registered yet, we'll still be running PNW tomorrow but it will be two drafts.

Drafts will be split as such:

Rank 1
Rank 3
Rank 5
Rank 7
Rank 9
etc.

Rank 2
Rank 4
Rank 6
Rank 8
Rank 10
etc.

The overall scores are mostly done, there are a few events that still aren't up yet, but will be up later today.

It seems that so far it is a two-man race for first between Automated Scoring, and Peach Alliance.

If enough people pick early and we get enough of the field completed I may be able to get back in time to run the draft (I'm only 5 miles from the arena).
Thus we need Curiosity to make their pick now.

Double, triple check. If there's for sure only 3 teams available, put in replacements as normal. Last person only gets two teams.
