View Full Version : [FF]: 2014 Season Long Fantasy FIRST
With the passing of IRI it is time to start a new season of Fantasy FIRST. Sign up is til November 1st..
Once again we will be doing teams. You may submit the same team you have. You don't have to have all four member post in the thread that they will participate. You can just say the four same team members that you had before and that will be good enough. From one to four players. You can come up with a team name or claim your own team name to affiliate with yourself (I am going with the X-Cats even though I will be the only X-Cat participating). Please list if you are a lone representative or are affiliated with another participant.
Also please make sure you have the time to devote to 60 to 70+ drafts within a month and a half period (the drafts will be starting November 15th this year) while I'm not going to require 70+ lists because I don't even know what weeks the regionals are on but what I will do is if you miss five drafts in a row (that means if you don't make one pick or have sent me a list) you will receive a PM from me. If I don't receive a timely response (24 hours) you are booted from the league!
Information about how the league is run is here (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/2574?).
I"ll say it again if you really can't find the time don't bother signing up.

(Oh, and... I think there were a couple of minor syntax tweaks in the rules that didn't get uploaded yet. I'll fix that pronto.)
[Edit] Uploaded the minor revisions, having to do with where some awards are counted and what area championships are covered. Same place as Ed linked.

Why don't some of you "going solo but looking for people to play with" folks get together?

Well, I personally have changed my mind and wanna remain solo, mainly because I decided that I would rather do everything on my own schedule rather than have to coordinate anything.

Currently, only myself is on the team.
My schedule is busy in the fall though, so, if anyone wants to join my team, PM me and we can talk.

Flippin' The Greatest* is back in with our previous roster (XaulZan11, Akash Rastogi, JackS, Chris is me)
*Really, after last season's performance, we're Flippin' The Middle Of The Pack...
Just as a friendly request for the season ahead: Start thinking now about whether you think you can run a draft or three. Due to the high volume of drafts, I would count on 2/day, which means Ed and somebody else (or maybe two somebody elses).
It would be really nice if someone were to volunteer to run one of the district areas, for example--6-9 drafts spread out through the draft season--and that way we're not scrambling to fill holes in those. (Bonus if you give Mars_James a hand with scoring the district area you run drafts for--double the pay! :p )

I plan to help run drafts again this year. However, I cannot commit to specific ones yet due to various reasons.
I plan to help run drafts again this year. However, I cannot commit to specific ones yet due to various reasons.
One of the items under discussion in the "what changes could be made to make life easier on the folks who run this" thread (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113293?) was the use of folks who could run district areas, and setting the schedule so that each of those folks had some freedom to swap spots with another person doing a different area, or fudge the start time within limits. (And... having anybody doing a district area being able to recruit volunteers to take a spot or two.)

I don't want to intrude on anyone's teams, so I'll declare myself a free agent. Never done FF before so I'd love it if a veteran could mentor me through this season. But I wouldn't mine being with a rookie either.

No but try not to do it to often it kind of defeats one of the main purpose of Fantasy First, learning about teams you never would have otherwise.

And two(ish) a day? Does that mean EVERY day once the season starts?...
What does it take to run a draft? Being a rookie I don't know if I can do that or if I should just focus on how FF works in the first place...
And two(ish) a day? Does that mean EVERY day once the season starts?...
Second question first: Yes, and yes. With 90* events, drafting from sometime around November 15... skipping Christmas and New Year's and Thanksgiving... there are something like 45 drafting days in the season. If we aren't doing 2-fers, we're drafting after Kickoff or doing 3-fers, neither of which is a good thing.
What it takes to run a draft is a little harder. You'll need a couple of hours of dedicated Internet usage time, maybe 3, depending on which event(s) you draw. There is a program to make setup and running of drafts much easier--if you're still interested after reading this I'll try and find the link again. (And I should know--I wrote the original version because I kept making dumb mistakes/wanted to ease my load a bit.) You'll need to make sure people know you're running the draft; you'll need to collect the lists sent in. You'll need to be on alert for edits when you're making an update post. And, you'll need to be able to work well under pressure. There's nothing quite like the last round of a 2-tier or 3-tier event to put pressure on you...
*I deliberately "forgot about" the World Championship, at 4 drafts, and the four District Championships, at 1 draft each, as those happen AFTER Week 6 of competition.

Is there a thread with the previous season's drafting that I can read to acclimate myself with the process? I literally have ZERO idea how this works...
Maybe I'll run one next season ;P Thanks for letting me know about it!

As a matter of fact... how many hundred drafts do you want to read through? http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=128, read anything with a year at the start of the thread that isn't a sticky. (The waiver thread is also a good read, as you can often pick up some pretty good teams from that.)
Read http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/2574 as well; it happens to be the complete rules as currently written (stuff changes sometimes, but not all that often).

Soooo...that's what you use to decide who gets who?
Is that done in every draft?
I'm in with Team Spark!!!
Let's do this!!!
Soooo...that's what you use to decide who gets who?

No- just IRI. You probably know that IRI is one of the most evenly balanced competitions in the world, if not the most. Because of that, the auction model works well here as a bidder is forced to save money to bid on other teams that the bidder will want. If it was some other robotics regional/district, bidders would be bidding on the high teams only and picking up random teams from the pool intentionally.
Food for thought, Ed- If it was the championship, however, it would be an interesting thing to go after. Enough teams in a division to satisfy all participants and enough talent in each division like at IRI.

I have a feeling that the IRI bid/auction style draft was a test or rather one time deal. I don't think it was a very easy draft to run and I doubt Ed wants to do it again.

It would've been fun if people had shown up, but even then I wouldn't want to do it again. It. Was. Brutally. Long.

That was the issue.
An auction draft would require designing an app that would be able to search through every list submitted, go through the ranking list and sort through all the bids withing say two minutes. A person cannot do that.
FYI: I've added a tips-and-tricks document for the draft runners to the CD-Media version of the rules, which was also updated to reflect the proper maximum number of players in a team. Same link as before.

Just to play Devil's Advocate here, do you really think the championship divisions are well balanced enough? Entries into championships are from Chairman's/EI/RAS/Winning Alliance/Buy-in. Chairman's/EI/RAS teams should have a well performing robot, however this is not always the case. The winning alliance captain and 1st pick robots are probably really good, but the 2nd pick may or may not be (and of course buy-ins are pure random). Now you want to take all these teams and divide them *randomly among 4 divisions? Seems kinda sketchy to me to call them balanced.
*I say randomly because who really knows what FIRST decides ;)

Hardly playing Devil's Advocate. The data agrees (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/2843) (<=shameless self-reference). I agree as well. Too many teams selected in CMP division drafts for it to be balanced.

Okay so if you aren't using the money values to decide on teams, how is one normally run?

The normal way Fantasy FIRST is run is that each event has its own draft. the FF teams are randomly ordered by the randomizer, except for championships drafts. Then, based on order, the FF team gets 3 time slots, anywhere from 7 to 10 or so. That time ticket that you receive indicates when you are allowed to put in a selection. Say you have the #1 pick for GTR east. You have until 7:05 pm (the time when the picking window for #2 on the list opens) to make a selection. Everyone will go in order to get their first selection, then the order will reverse, and then it will go in descending order again, until every FF team has 3 teams that they have selected (or were randomly chosen by the randomizer in case of absence).

Understandable enough. I had that suspicion at the back of mind, but never really thought too much about it.

I've linked the Season Long rules document in CD-Media before. I might suggest sitting down with the first couple of pages and one or two of the 2013 drafts that aren't IRI (just for grins, Bayou and Mount Olive District would probably be good). The key thing to remember is that your slot opens at the specified time or when the slot ahead of it picks, whichever is earlier. (Last season, one of the later drafts had a tier finish before it was supposed to begin. First time that had ever happened, and still the only time...)

I looked in the FF folder and the only 2013 drafts in there are for IRI...where are these hundreds of drafts that I'm being told about?
Edit: I searched draft and found some....but Bayou was not among them:( Is that anywhere specific?

At the bottom left of the page for the forum (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=128), you can change your display options to show threads from the past xxx amounts of time. Your default is probably a month (or something like that) which would exclude last season's drafts.
You can also change that default in your User Control Panel, under Edit Options (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions) at "Default Thread Age Cut Off."
Your problem is that your only looking at threads from the last month.

Might it be possible to expand teams to 5 players?
I haven't asked my own team this yet, but most of us keep getting busier and busier, and even sometimes can't produce lists to send in, especially with the increasing number of events.
What do you think?

That's what sending a pick list in is for. Send 'em in in advance to whoever happens to be known to run drafts; we'll get 'em to the right person.
FYI, remember that the drafting all happens before Kickoff. We'll probably be drafting Week 3 sometime around the end of November.
Now that all the regionals and districts are finally sorted here is the schedule for the drafts:
November 16 Alamo, Centerline
November 17 Plametto, Southfield
November 18 Isreal, Nashua
November 19 Inland Empire, Auburn Mountainview
November 20 Central Illinois, Mt. Olive
November 21 Arkansas, Hatboro-Horsham
November 22 GTR East, GTR West
November 23 San Deigo, Groton
November 24 Crossroads, UNH-Durahm
November 25 Northern Lights, Lake Superior
November 27 Central Valley, Kettering
November 28 Hub City, Gull Lake
November 29 Orlando, Oregon City
November 30 North Carolina ,Glacier Peak
December 1 Mexico City, WPI
December 2 Dallas, Escanaba
December 3 Utah, Howell
December 4 Kansas City, Springside
December 5 St. Louis, Eastern Washington
December 6 Tech Valley, Mount Vernon

I think part of the reason for having so many single drafts at the tail end is to allow for the (hopefully rare) event that isn't drafted on schedule to drop down, or additional districts added.
Although... Ed, didn't you say you'd be starting drafting on Nov. 15?

No one has signed up for an event yet, but that process will start in a few minutes and continue through early December.
I prefer http://frclinks.frclinks.com/ to find my team lists. Instructions are on the website, but /e/txsa would by the thing to type into the search box to get to the Alamo team list. Currently that is giving 2013 data, and /e/txsa/2014 would force it to look for 2014 data, which isn't available quite yet.

Thanksgiving is Nov. 28, and by tradition drafts aren't scheduled on holidays, but there's a draft that day. Should be an easy fix, I think--put the drafts for the 28th on the 26th.

I think were missing PNW Oregon State U and Buckeye, and maybe a few more. That list had 88 (if I counted correctly), and the FRC list at http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc/regional-events has 96 listed events, minus the 4 district cmp for 92. Still two short.

From your most recent draft schedule, it appears that the Oregon State District Event, the Buckeye Regional, and the Sacramento Regional are all missing. After that, you should have all non-qualifying events (MAR champs, PNW Champs, MSC, NE Champs, and CMP take the total from 91 events up to the number of total FRC sanctioned events at 96 (http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc/regional-events))

Out of pure curiosity, are the scores calculated manually after each event?
Out of pure curiosity, are the scores calculated manually after each event?
I believe they are. I always did them manually; not sure if one of the previous (or current) scorers used an automated system or not.
Note that due to a -2 for a loss being in play this year, the W-L-T has to be used, not the qual points or seeding points or whatever they're called this year.

Out of pure curiosity, are the scores calculated manually after each event?
When I was scoring last year I set up macros in Excel to pull all the data from the FIRST site and organize some of it, but it was still largely a manual process.

Indeed, when I have something more worth showing I'll post it up and ask for input. The general idea: enter the event (event code, as shown on frc links) and it outputs each team with their calculated FF score. Parameters for the point worth of a loss (since we switch between 0 and -2), event, year, and an option for an increased display for each team that shows how that score was reached (lists wins, losses, awards, ect.)
Attached are Team Spark's draft lists for November!

Missing Sacramento Regional and something else. Should total 91 events, that list is at 89.
EDIT: Found it. Buckeye Regional.
As a heads-up for y'all:
I will be putting up the waiver system shortly after SLFF registration closes on Nov. 1. I'm probably going to need some help--if you're running a block of district drafts (say, MI), I'd appreciate knowing about changes to who's registered at what event within a reasonable time.
For those that haven't played, the way waivers work is this: If a team becomes available at an event after that event has drafted, they go on waiver. (Reason doesn't matter--though pool trades up to about midnight on draft day are generally exempted.) Anybody in that particular tier of that particular event can put in a claim on that team--if you do, and your name is the highest on the list of those who claim that team, you get them, and you go to the bottom of the list. Initial list order is determined by last year's Championship finish order, reversed, and this year's registration order if you didn't play last year.
It's probably a good idea to have someone tracking the waivers, as you never know when 2056 will become available--or not!

....It's probably a good idea to have someone tracking the waivers, as you never know when 2056 will become available--or not!
When do waivers stop? I have read this in the rules, but kept screwing it up last year. IE, if 2056 signs up for an event 2 months after the event drafted, how long is it they are on waiver vs. open pool?
When do waivers stop? I have read this in the rules, but kept screwing it up last year. IE, if 2056 signs up for an event 2 months after the event drafted, how long is it they are on waiver vs. open pool?
They are on waiver immediately, and stay on waiver until the following time the waivers are "cycled"--that is, the next time I award teams--given that they've been on waiver for more than 2 days. (If they're put on waiver less than 2 days from when I cycle waivers, they'll carry over to the next week.) The 2-day minimum was put in to make sure people had time to see that there was a new team available.
Any team that isn't claimed off of waivers during the cycle becomes a free agent effective immediately.
Any team dropped during a waiver cycle goes onto waivers, effective immediately--so if folks make their claims in public, savvy observers can spot some potential good deals coming down the line.
One other item: I stop running waivers right around the time Week 1 lists lock. It just becomes a bit of a hassle at that point.
So, to use the example given: the Magnolia Regional drafts in November. Sometime in late December, 2056 realizes that there are spots available and they have funds to travel down there and compete. They register and are processed, but somehow they pick a time when FIRST is busy and show up on the list in mid-January. Let's say that the FF players are busy for another couple weeks before someone spots them, so Feb. 1 rolls around and someone says "COOOOOL!!!!" and picks 2056 to join their alliance.
Now, at this point, what I'll usually do if someone makes a pick of a team that wasn't available before (instead of making a waiver claim) is to negate the pick, send the team onto waivers in all applicable tiers, and note the pick as a claim. Feb. 1 happens to be a Saturday next year, and I typically cycle waivers on Sunday nights--that means <48 hours will have passed. So, on Feb. 9, I'll cycle waivers, including all claims for 2056 in Magnolia Regional. Highest on the list gets 'em. If people have been too busy building robots to make claims, they'll be a free agent--other than whoever picked them, of course.

It's the 28th off--we'll probably just shift 27th and 28th up a day each.
Non-draft days once we start: Thanksgiving (didn't used to be an issue--darn districts!), Christmas Day, New Year's Eve--all by tradition.
And we have a new wrinkle--see "pesky districts". In this case, Michigan added the Midland District (3/21-3/22). It's pretty open right now, only 2 registered teams, so I'd suggest adding it to one of the 3 January days that only has one draft.
Oh, and this means that we can't afford to let even one draft slip--we've only got 2 makeup slots left.

FF League,
Last year, Team PureMichigan put together a Google Doc Spreadsheet to help organize our pick-list for each draft. We figured this might be useful to the other teams and to the people running the drafts. We have updated that template with the new dates for the 2014 season.
Copy FF 2014 - Pick List Template to your Google Docs (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtxIhsQViWmSdHJyUi12NVl5X1VMdVlOTGtVRjJ0W mc&usp=sharing)
After you copy the spreadsheet to your Google Docs, feel free to change [TeamName] to your FF Team Name and remove "Copy of " from the Title. Then you can share the Google Doc with the individuals running the draft (Koko Ed, etc).
Hope this helps,

CSV files can be imported into excel or read through MATLAB. There are also a bunch of online utilities to convert them

To make it easy on the draft runner, I would pm the draft runner with your picks listed in order. Just import them into excel and then copy-paste. Not all draft runners are proficient in excel, or have matlab.

I have Excell so I think it would work.

Actually, these .csv files open just fine in good old notepad. A csv is just ASCii delimited by commas to denote where the next cell starts, since each team is on it's own row you don't even have to deal with the commas.
Alomo is up to 63 teams.
We could actually do a full draft.
The danger is everyone would be picked and if somebody drops out someone would be a team short.
So should I do it or go ahead and split the draft?
Chris is me
14-11-2013, 19:02
I'd rather split drafts that are borderline; that said, it's more than possible that FF teams will drop out after the first few rounds which would free up several teams.
There are quite a few acceptable methods to get your lists in; the main thing is that the teams be separated and in order. I tend to use a combination of Excel and Notepad to get a list in and out (team list to notepad, to Excel for initial cleanup, back to Notepad for more cleanup, then pick my poison regarding which I want to use to sort, send to Notepad before kicking out to Ed and whoever else is running via PM.)
Oh, and it looks like Midland (Great Lakes Bay Region District Event) was overlooked during the schedule build--it's currently at 23, with 7 open slots.

For newbies and veterans alike here is a few pointers from the first day of drafts.
1. Send lists as early as possible. This allows for the draft runner to get set up and prepared, don't be afraid that if the draft runner is on a team they will steal your list.
2. When sending a list of picks do so vertically and unnumbered. This allows for a simple seamless transition to excel or similar programs.
3. If drafting live and are just waiting for your pick time keep checking the threads because quite often your pick time will come early.
4. Finally request read receipts on everything, also for all draft runners always post whose list you have, it helps because you will not be assaulted with 5 copies of the same team and will allow teams on google docs to resend a link if you have lost it ( This will be important this year as I believe 65% of teams are using docs and last year there were only 3 teams total using it)
Any other suggestions from my fellow draft runners, or any suggestions from teams on how draft runners can make it easier on you all?
Something that can make life easier on the teams is if the draft runners post the drafts they're running early--but not before the previous round finishes if possible. (On that note, I'll be covering Central Illinois on 11/20, under a time delay of 30 minutes from normal. It'll be opened the night before.)

Out of curiosity, how are the draft orders for each event determined? Random generator?

Yes they are random.

Yes, I'm running them, just got back from a birthday party. Threads up shortly
Southfield will be broken into 3 tiers unless you want to reschedule it. There are 31 teams signed up and 21 FF teams. Splitting them 10 and 11 requires 33 teams.

If doing multiple tiers off set each by a few minutes for two tiers: 7:00 and 7:03 start time
for 3 do 7:00 7:02 and 7:04 it will help trust me

And the edit button can dodge post time limits. Just make sure to check for other posts before finalizing the edits, and post a new post every few times through.
Even doing three tiers back to back at the same time will take less time than Palmetto...

Automated Scoring requests a redraft of the Southfield Tier 2. I had sent the list for Southfield to KokoEd, but it was not forwarded to JosephC for any reason.

To be fair you did ask if I had received your list and I said no...

I sent the link to him. He said there was no lists ofr Southfield.
So that's on you.
There will be no redraft.

Do you have a read receipt from Ed? Also he informed you half an hour before the start he didn't have it, why not send it then? It is entirely up to Ed, I mostly am asking these questions out of curiosity/follow up.
To be fair you did ask if I had received your list and I said no...
Yeah, I had forgotten about it... That was my bad entirely.
Still, I did send my list to Koko Ed yesterday, evidenced by my screenshot, and you never got it.
The screenshot that he had posted in the draft was of Woolly's, and not mine.
I had my picklists visible for anyone who has the link, so I have no idea.

To repeat what I already said:
I sent the link to him. He said there was no lists of Southfield within.

There will be no redraft.

I had posted a screenshot of the private message. Would that count as the read receipt, because I am not sure how to view the read receipts.
Again, I forgot about it entirely when the draft had started. That one is on me.
Just to be absolutely clear here, because I'm just a tad confused here.
Joseph, you did not get my list through Koko's PM? Was the link not working or did you not get the list at all whatsoever? Could you elaborate just a little more?

To view read receipts: Go to your User CP. Down under "Send New Message" is a button reading "Track Messages". That should show all your messages that were tagged with a read receipt.
Back to the regularly scheduled discussion...

The link I got from Koko Ed opened into the two screenshots I provided in the Southfield thread. There was no southfield list in the link provided.

Odd.
If that was the only link from Automated Scoring, then he didn't send you mine at all. Those are Woolly's.
Regardless, I'll accept the verdict of no redraft since I had asked prior to the draft beginning. This issue bugs me a lot, though.

This is why I wanted one list. Not several lists. I got enough on my mind without having to worry about sorting through who's list is supposed to used on what night.

Understandable. I'll work with my group next time to put the lists together in one location.
I'm still rather unhappy about this, but it is what it is.

We'll tavk Midland on at the end. It'll give it time to get filled up.
I would just like to remind teams to send their Michigan pick lists to me, not Ed. The workload on running a draft is tremendous already, without Ed having to worry about forwarding lists.
TL;DR : If you send a Michigan pick list to Ed, do not assume I'll get it.

I just realized that since Ed normally runs one draft a night we gave him the night after Christmas off. Enjoy your 2 night break and a Merry Early Christmas Ed :p (Even though your present will be technically after Christmas  )

I get other nights off. I just have to let people know I'm taking them.
