Who all saw the MSNBC article about Dean's new invention? Lot's of hype for sure...but what can it be? It'll make him richer than Gates and will change how cities are designed! Your own personal helicopter perhaps? The guesses are flying!

IT is supposed to revolutionize people's way of thinking and all, since Dean is a combination of Ford and Edison. IT is supposed to be "better than World Wide Web, and as significant as PC". So I don't know. But then again, Dean's FIRST already deeply influence FIRST's participant's way of thinking, I won't be surprise to see if IT is actually what it seems.

Maybe IT is something like computer game, since it's supposed to be interesting. With all the comparison with PC and www, I won't be surprise if IT will be the next "fun" thing to do, just like how Computer games attract millions of teenager/adult many hour of gaming everyday. Also, computer games are also a huge factor in driving the developement of PC.

I can totally picture a personal 3D computer interface, where people can carry little computer with them, and have a device that let users look at computer screen floating in the air. Some where in the line of a "hologram" (not sure if spelling is right) of Star Trek. This will be a revolutional product, as it replace every monitor out there with something really small, and good to enviroment as it eliminate the need to make display models. Any kind of hardware used to display message/signal/status will be replaced by this 3D visual device. I can imagine how a device like this will have many many use out there.

Having only met Dean Kamen once (an experience I won't soon forget), it seems to me that he can be much wealthier than he already is; if that were his goal.

Gates can write bigger checks, I guess, but he doesn't have the VISION the Dean has to do something that doesn't put money in his own pocket. Does Bill Gates have a steam engine in his living room?

I guess I'm just not a Bill fan but I am a huge Dean fan.

My only objection was to TIME (1 or 2 years) not TALENT.

I am neither a fan nor a detractor of Bill Gates. I
also would have little trouble believing that Dean may
somehow because the world's richest man, given time.

My point was that it takes time for such vast sums to
be acquired, 1 to 2 years did not seem to be in any way
an possible timeframe (imho).

I might be inclined to agree with you. BUT it is Dean and DEKA we are talking about here. If you listen to all of the speeches the Dean's Invstor's, etc. give about him they are basically like "we didn't think anyone could pull of something this crazy...so we knew there was only one place to go...DEKA." If it were any other R+D company I would pass it over as vaporware...but Dean's about the only one I know of who could back up such articles.

At least that is one idea that has been thrown around at the AnandTech BBS. There are over a hundred messages right now. The two most popular ideas are either a personal helicopter type propellar system or a teleportation device.

Personally, I hope Dean gets more money than Gates.

One quote changed my mind:

I doubt anyone would fear a motorized scooter, regardless of how cool it was.

The Stirling Engine 2002 would turn the entire automotive industry on its head, and it's certainly an industry that might be able to scare DK into secrecy.

It has to be the Stirling. That's my official answer.

Um, how? Is FIRST going to have an IPO? There's the supposed part where Dean Kamen will be rich.....er, richer (then Gates!). And anyway what gain would FIRST get by misleading people? Although I would say this will most definately be a Good Thing (tm) for FIRST. I wonder how big of a sponsor of FIRST a new company making this product will be?

here are the ff ideas:

1. if it were to out do billy, then it must be an operating system that installs over windows and works better than windows perhaps ditching the mouse, the keyboard and the interfacing the brain with the computer. (doubt it, at least not yet)

2. an energy source is a high possiblity. i bet those fellas at deka are making a product that uses organic material (especially organic waste) as a source of power. and best of all, with a byproduct that's biodegradable or even consumable...hehe. (brownies!)

3. better than a computer eh? i say a pill that will make us smarter (not needing a computer), faster, stronger, etc. hehe..... or maybe a pill that allows us to sleep less (or not at all) yet still be able to reap its benefits, and live longer. yah yah!

4. i'm not sure about the video game below, but i do say that deanie will make something revolutionary that will help the WORLD and our FUTURE. That seems to be his main goals in work.

I go with 2 and 4. 1 and 3 are possible, but maybe someone else can make that happen.... i have too much in my head.

Awhile ago, I was talking to an engineer about FIRST and mentioned Dean's name...and this engineer was like "Does he have a company called DEKA?" And I was like "Yes...how did you know that?!" And he gave some vague answer but after some more questions, he mentioned that his company was working on some stuff for DEKA that was top secret. And they only knew about the part they were working on, not what the entire device was, and he couldn't tell me anything further than that. But anyway...if I were to hypothetically say that this company is a tire manufacturer whose origins were in bicycle tires...would that change anything? :)
