With CalGames coming up in less than 3 days, I thought I'd start the thread for the event.

I'm super stoked for this year's CalGames event! I'll be the DJ for the weekend, so if anyone has any song requests feel free to post them here.

Who's attending CalGames? Has anyone made any changes to their robots? What are you most excited about?

I was wondering when someone would start one...

We're bringing our offseason bot Mark III to the competiton. Hopefully (with the hours ticking down) we'll fix our last few programming problems and be able to run a 7 disc auto!

Does anyone know when the preliminary schedule will get posted?

2073 will be there!

After Powerhouse proved our FCS worked, we've made a tweak here and there to improve reliability. We have also added a feeder shoot for consistent and continuous loading, something we have been sorely lacking.

In addition, we plan on having our off-board vision tracking system fully functional for automatic alignment for our FCS.

It should be an epic event.

Does anyone know if WRRF got their remaining volunteer slots filled?
They were still looking for someone to "Webcast the event, 1 or 2 Photographers, 4 dedicated Queuing volunteers, 3 Score keepers, and 1 Referee (please note this must be college age or older)" as of this morning.

Team 846 is very happy to be joining all of you at CalGames!

Ultimate Funky Object may look the same, but underneath the hood and behind the driver station glass, it's all completely different. Here's a sneak preview:

Good luck to everyone going to CalGames! We plan to have a lot of fun.

Will the trophies have an asterisk on them considering 254 isn't competing? ;)

Well, I'd hope that the winners and finalists will have really earned their place in the finals, just as they would at any event! But, yes, it will be interesting to see how eliminations plays out without a team as completely dominant as 254. All the same, we'll miss them.

2122 is packing the trailer and loading the robot today! We spent the summer creating a new robot to the extent that the only carryover mechanisms are the drive units. Looking forward to having some fun in Sunnyvale.....

Currently the position for webcasting the event hasn't been taken yet, so there is no webcast link.

And there will be no asterisks on the trophies - we'll just have a separate set of awards for "Team(s) who usually win CalGames" and "Team(s) who actually won CalGames".

I'm kinda disappointed 254 won't be there. Who else is going to show us how to Dip?

1678 is looking to continue it's off-season undefeated streak! [/blatantbragging]

But in all seriousness, I'm really looking forward to being back at this event. So many great teams, it should be a blast!

1678 was hoping to webcast, but I think too many of our kids are taking the SAT on Saturday... I'll double check today and see if we can make something happen.

I heard 254 couldn't go because of the government shutdown.

EDIT: IE, I heard that 254 was invited from the waitlist, but couldn't attend because they couldn't get their robot out of NASA. I should have elaborated more. I believe it was a Marin County team that had to drop out at the last minute.

I heard 254 couldn't go because of the government shutdown.

The opening isn't 254. It's another team. I don't think 254 would have gone regardless of the shutdown, since they were on the wait list with us a long time before the shutdown was even relevant. Someone from their team can clarify if I'm wrong.

We were notified there is now a spot and asked if we would be willing/able to go if the teams ahead of us couldn't make it.

All our stuff is locked up at NASA right now so even if we wanted to we can't go.

There are so many great things to say about CalGames that I really don't know where to start. I just keep looking back over the events of the day and can't really believe that it all happened.

First, our qual matches were really a tough time for the team. We kept having little things go wrong (joysticks coming unplugged, one drive motor partially unplugged, bumpers vibrating off) that seemed to be holding us back from our true potential. We only really hit our stride in our last qualification match where we put up some good discs while our alliance partners played some great D against 2122.

Being picked by 971 was an amazing experience. Besides being fun to work with, they all strived to have the best performance on the field possible, and played the game like pros. It was very cool to be able to work with such a high performance team, and really feel like we had earned our place on the alliance. Our alliance only put up less than 100 points in one match, and twice (had one more auto shot gone in in our first match or our battery not fallen out in our last match) could have brought the #1 alliance to a third match. Our partners 4255 played some good D too, and pulled off some great fixes for some of their robot's technical problems.

We faced a lot of amazing competitors, but the two that really stand out in my mind were 2122 and 1678. They're both class acts, and completely blew me away with their teamwork on and off the field. I never thought I'd see my team face two such great teams in the finals, and there are no two teams I'd have rather lost to. I'm really looking forward to seeing 1678 again at Madtown, and hope that 2122 manages to get down into California again soon.

1678 would like to thank all of the organizers, volunteers, sponsors and participants in this year's Cal games. We had a blast and were impressed with the level of competition displayed by so many teams.

971 finally showed us what their robot is capable of. Their 7-disc auto was a thing of beauty and their floor pick up was impressive. Team 100 had a super-accurate shooter and cycled efficiently. It was also great to see 2073's full court shooter in action and 846's mid line auto. Congrats as well to 1351 for getting their 30 point climb and dump and to 1868 for their 20-point climb and dump. I'm sure I'm forgetting some other worthy performances (and I've deliberately left one out) so I apologize to any teams I've not mentioned.

A great big thank you to Team Taters (2122) for believing in us and selecting us onto their alliance. You were an awesome team to work with and helped made the finals so exciting for everyone. Also, thanks to Team 4171 for playing great defense and giving us just that extra edge we needed. Those matches were so close - it could have gone either way. It was an honor to compete against two icons of northern California FIRST robotics (971 and 100).

We are looking forward to seeing some of you again at the Madtown Throwdown and competing against all of the norCal big guns.

Being able to participate in Calgames again this year was great.

As we drove home, it gave us time to reflect on a lot of things that we either missed in the moment or appreciated more with a bit of time. Some of the best parts for us:

1. The Calgames volunteers – really can’t say anything that seems appropriate other than, thank you for all of the work, and the great environment that you created.

2. The chance to volunteer – it helped our folks understand what it takes to put on the event – I would recommend it for everybody who competes in FRC.

3. The fun and positive teams that we got to partner with and play against in qualifications – a few that stood out for us were 2073, 2035, and 4186.

4. The graciousness and warmth of the folks we competed with and against in the elimination rounds including teams 971, 100, and 4255, as well as our partners 1678 and 4171.

5. The chance to eat with and talk with Quixilver on Saturday evening after the competition – we really appreciated their willingness to host us, and the time together.

Thank you all for a great experience,

Having the pit next to these guys..I can tell you that they were REALLY fun and are a really great team. I hope we have the opportunity to compete with them in the future!

It was another great CalGames. Thank you to WRRF, 3501, and all of the volunteers that help put this event together, we look forward to attending again next year.

Congratulations to the winning alliance and finalist alliance. This CalGames was surprisingly very competitive and fun to participate in and watch.

I would like to thank 2144 and 1351 for inviting us to join their alliance. We were very excited to see how the three of us would play in eliminations, as our alliance had a little bit of everything. Unfortunately, our robot was plagued with technical problems after alliance selection, so we had to call in a backup. Speaking of which, thank you to team 3256 for filling in our slot. For those of you that don't know, they were nearly packed up and loading their robot into their van when they got the news that they were needed on the field.

Overall, great CalGames!

Anyone have photos of 2122 and 100?

Here are some pics now that our robot is out of the trailer and back in the shop. For 2013, a senior designed our first swerve unit so there was a pretty steep learning curve for the team during the season. First pic shows picker arm in raised position. Second pic shows feeder station feed ramp.

Additional shots of 2122. With the exception of the swerve units and the extendable shot blocker, the entire robot was designed and built solely for Calgames incorporating the lessons learned from the 2013 season. First pic shows picker arm in lowered position. Second pic shows access to belly pan and electrical components with disk magazine in raised position. Third pic shows one of our swerve units.

Now for my .02 on my first Calgames: the organizers, volunteers, and host team put on an amazing event! The extent of their efforts was evident in the smoothness with which the weekend proceeded and the welcoming atmosphere that was palpable. Only wish we had more time to meet with more of the students and mentors of the participating teams.

One of the funniest things I've heard at a FRC competition was when, after the 8th seed made their first pick, the MC asked the crowd to shout who they should pick next, and someone yelled, with perfect timing, "254!"

Congrats on putting together such a solid robot over the summer. We loved teaming with you through the elims.

Thanks for the kind words, we had a blast working with you guys and your impressive robot. WRT the off-season robot build, it gave us the opportunity to try out some new design/build ideas (primarily to lose weight with no loss in performance), while providing additional hands-on training to our newer students. I still can't believe we came in 20 lbs underweight..
