Does anyone know a good (legal) way to measure the instantaneous current drawn by a motor or the instantaneous voltage drop across a motor such that we can monitor it at the player station OR have software do something with the info?

Wow.
That's a very interesting idea that could be extremely useful...
The only thing I can think of right now would be to use the battery voltage variable to implement some software. The problem being there that is the voltage of the entire system, not a single motor. With some creative programing, I'm sure you could find a way to protect your highest draw motors using data from across the whole system.

Every time I see Tony or Bob (or even Paul -- the
E-Wave radio guru), I try to kick them to get them to
offer a means of knowing real time motor current and
real time wheel speed.

If ever there was a year for traction control, this is it.

Perhaps next year.

After I hit submit for the last time, I realized that
not everyone knows Tony and Bob.

They are the two remaining founders/owners of
Innovation First (Dave-the-Man is no long with them, FYI).
