Photo from Kickoff Filming

Blog Date: Monday, November 25, 2013 - 10:51

Over the weekend, Dean, Woodie and Don did some taping of their portion of the Kickoff video. Check out this photo:

Well this obviously must be a game hint.

Just to get it out of the way...bottles of water! There, it's out there and no more needs to be said about water games...forever I hope.

Green background. There will be a green alliance.

I was thinking about a game with 3 alliances playing.

It would solve the problem of not getting enough matches in per regional/event

Having 9 teams play every round would increase circulation.

A 3 color alliance game would be detrimental to our reversible bumpers though, but perhaps the concept could be applied to make triple reversible bumpers lol.

Looking at the metadata (http://regex.info/exif.cgi?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.usfirst.org%2Fsit es%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2FuploadedImages%2FRobotics_P rograms%2FFRC%2FGame_and_Season__Info%2F2014%2FKic koff-Filming.jpg) for the picture, the artist and camera model is set to "There Are No Game Clues In This Photo". Typical GDC trolling...

Also, maybe it's just me, but the red light on the right side of the picture looks a bit weird. Probably not relevant though.

I know... we have virtual game pieces! The robots will operate in front of a green screen, and we'll have to interact with game pieces the same way a weatherman does, by looking at a monitor to see where they are!

So like...a simulation (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1304219&postcount=9)? :p

I'm a little worried now I might actually be right.

It's a banana for scale

Anyway, I think FIRST has gone downhill lately, going all CGI. We won't even have real, physical robots this year!

If only the photo was bigger... I'm surprised no one has said to enhance their phones (there's paper underneath) or to enhance their eyes to see what the monitors have on them... I guess we'll know more January 4th ;)

Here is what we can legitimately infer from this picture

Whatever background they are standing (sitting and Dean) against, green-screen is cheaper than either:
-building a set
-or flying them out to location

The background itself, however, could be:
-a CGI world
-projecting a camera image/footage behind them to spoof a location
-or a generic background with just the FIRST logo or something

clearly the chairs their sitting on are the game pieces

Imagine trying to design a robot to pick up chairs and throw them into a goal, now theres a game piece!

It's a banana for scale

I can't believe I get this reference.

On topic, I think this is a red herring. FIRST's metadata says it's "definitely not a game hint", hoping that everyone think's its a game hint because that only makes sense to mess with us.

But if it isn't, this is a huge indicator of something green on the field, and/or three of something on the field.

BBray_T1296

Also, notice how there is a thin green rug underneath them.

Almost as if the camera ran too low so they had to add more green to complete the CGI.

If you need their feet, maybe the game has something to do with the floor.

Since they have chairs, and solely for this reason, we must be able to eliminate their prescience in a water environment. But the jury is still out for regolith...

I think one of the most important things to take away from this picture, they still have not made denim boots yet.

As for the "red box" appears to be a box of Altoids.

there is also a a drain just in front of the set. More water hints...or maybe we have to cross a valley.

As for the "red box" appears to be a box of Altoids.Altoids game!

No, seriously: This looks as ordinary as can be, and most likely* is not any kind of game hint. It's just 3 guys in front of a green screen. As to why they published it, perhaps they just want to give a sense of perspective as to how far in advance these kind of things are done.

Or maybe they're just messing with us  Or maybe they just want to rub it in that THEY know the game and we do not...

If regolith ever makes a return, I will jump out of a window.

Can we just never repeat any element of the 2009 game ever again? Please?

Look at the way they're positioned, Don is sitting, both feet on the rung of the chair, Woody, sitting, with one foot off and one foot on, and Dean standing, not sitting, with both feet on the floor.

Something to do with the end game?!? Climbing a stepped field element?!?!

Then I saw the water bottles and realized it's obviously a water game....right....right?

*Sigh* I still can't believe everyone is dissecting this for a game hint. I'm pretty sure it's literally just a teaser for kick-off.

With that said, I'm really interested in the reasons for shooting in front of a green screen and what the end results will look like. I wish kick-off was still live, but I hope at least since it is not anymore, FIRST will do some more creative things with the broadcast.

There was no 2009. There wasn't a competition, there were no regionals, and we definitely did not build a robot.

I thought that the 'actors' stiffly grasping the rock-climbing wall last year were hilarious. More creative, yes please.

Return of Kinect. With an API.

Or a new KoP webcamera that took this photo? ;)

I liked the kickoff better when it was live. It just seemed much more personal. Granted it was nice that it was shorter last year, but there was no suspense, no build up to the game unveiling (in fact I think most people at the kickoff I was at were shocked and scrambled to turn their cameras on when the animation started).

Shortening the old kickoff style (keeping it to like an hour max) would have been much better IMO than cutting it down to what they did.
