I'm curious, if a goalie bot were to jump, would it be a violation of the bumper rules?

More importantly I think, could you make one that jumps??

G22

If a ROBOT is not in contact with the carpet in its GOALIE ZONE, its height (as defined in relation to the FIELD) must not exceed 5 ft.

The way I see it, jumping means losing contact with the carpet, in which case you lose the right to extend greater than 5 feet above the ground.

So a quadrotor is not a feasible robot design?

No, for a few reasons.

The biggest is that you are going to have quite a difficult time building a quadcopter that is light enough to fly with a legal battery, control system, and bumpers.

There are also a number of other rules that would be difficult to meet, such as R22 which says that your bumpers must reside in the "bumper zone" which is 2" - 10" off the ground.

EDIT- this same bumper rule makes jumping illegal.

Considering that we have to put duct tape on all of our corners... a robot with 4 "spinning blades of death/decapitation" would not pass inspection. :D

Also, what would happen if someone shot a ball at you? XD

THAT WOULD BE HILARIOUS.

I would be supremely impressed if someone made a flying FIRST bot though.
We actually did discuss it...

Yeah, the way the bumper rules are written, it seems once the match starts they are in respect to the fixed perimeter. I'm curious if jumping counts as articulating the fixed perimeter.

Duct Tape is allowed on robots now??? I take a year off and chaos ensues...

It has been allowed for several years now.

Tape was last banned as a fastener in 2008.

Even if you could make one that jumps with pneumatics, it probably wouldnt be allowed:)
