Engineer on team #5, Robocards, from Melvindale, MI and AFL (Alcoa Fujikura Ltd).
The OI has numerous red and green LED's which can be accessed through the ports for custom boxes. FIRST allows 4 green, 2 yellow and 1 red LED as provided in the kit.
A team member has a color deficiency (not color blind) and has a very hard time telling the yellow from the green LEDs when lit.
Upon asking FIRST if we may use an additional red LED, we were told no. It seems as though because the OI has numerous green & red LED's, and the ports access these same LED's, this is not an unreasonable request. All we are really doing is making them easier to see by placing them in the line of sight, rather than having to look down at the OI.
FIRST mentioned that the LED supplier had a long lead time, and could only supply what was in the kit. I think the red LEDs should be readily available across the US, and was wondering if other teams would like to see them added to the AWL? Maybe for next year, but I'd hate to have to hang our OI vertically against the acrylic alliance station for feedback.
