View Full Version : Help with the buying and wiring of LEDs
We need help with LEDs. Our plan is to have a ultrasensor on the robot and the LEDs show green if the robot is the appropriate distance and yellow if not. Our problem is we don't really know which LEDs to buy. We also are we planning on wiring the LEDs to a spike to control it, are we thinking about this the right way? We would rather not have to use an Arduino.
Thanks!

How bright do you need this LED signal? You may connect custom circuits to the Spike Relay, you can also power LEDs out of the Digital I/O in the O mode. You may also turn the LED into a sensor by using the I mode.

Bright enough to see it across the field. The driver should be able to easily see it while shooting.

Is feeding this information into the driver station out of the question?

We would rather have it on the robot so its easy for the driver to see instead of having to look at the driver station and back. That plan is our backup though!
Thanks!

Take a look at this recent post: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1330089&postcount=4

You can either buy a 12 volt LED (which has resistors inside it) or get a plain green LED (or whatever color you want) and add resistors as described in the post Joe Ross mentioned. If you buy resistors, make sure you calculate the power requirements (P=I*V) because a 1/4 watt resistor might be too small.
We get our LEDs from Superbrightleds.com
To see across the field you want maybe 500-1000 milliLumens of brightness. You don't need something like a 1 Watt LED, that's blindingly bright.
